if phil is happy where he is at right now ( i hope not) what are other viable options and can it work with this team?
john calipari- this seems to be the sexy choice. he is a motivator with connections throughout the bball world. he is well respected and can get his message across to anyone. great bball mind who is adequate on both ends of the court. had a bitter taste in his mouth from his last nba stint in nj, though it could be skewed because of the 99 season, that he wants to get rid of. he is wiser and ready to take the nba and he is used to the ny media from his stint in nj. decent choice.
jerry sloan- i actually like this pick. he will hold everyone accountable and will not hesitate to get into someone's face. he is old school which i think melo will respect as well as the team. underrated how good of a coach he is and i think he is a championship caliber coach. great mind on both ends and lin will flourish under sloan. sure he butted heads with d will but d will did play hard for him and these players will too. now, the BIG problem which will be the reason he wont last long is the media circus and the constant pr pushing of the garden which pushed van gundy out and led to clashes with brown. he is a simple guy who loves the game and not the circus.
coach k- i think it is time and this would be a perfect opportunity. not sure if he has an opt out of his duke contract but if he does, he is a logical choice. one of the greatest bball minds on the planet who knows the ins and outs of the game. more respected than most nba coaches who knows how to maximize his talents can handle the media scrutiny as well as pr stint but the question is whether he can handle these egos in the nba? it is a big difference than college.
mo cheeks- a darkhorse. he has dealt with knuckleheads and have them playing hard. good motivator who is well respected. he has handled one of the biggest knuckleheads in recent memory with iverson. the big question is his x's and o's. he has been outcoached quite a bit, especially in the playoffs. this could be taken care of with good assistants but why bother?
other candidates: jvg ( i wish but as long as dolan is in charge, no way), stan vg ( unless they go far in the playoffs, this is it for him in orlando), paul westphal, jim o'brien, rudy tomjanivich and flip saunders
I will be happy with all but MO CHEEKS? Are you effin kidding me putting him in that list?
Phil
Thibs
Sloan
Woodson
---------
It would take Woodson failing miserably to then pursue:
Nate Mc
SVG
Ewing
Forget about Calipari when was the last time a college coach has success coaching nba players remember Tim owens, Rick Pitino(Celtics) etc.
I'm secretly hoping Woodson goes on a magical tear to secure his job. If not, Sloan or JVG if somehow the 2 sides were to somehow bury the hatchet.
Options besides Phil Jackson? Impossible.

Me too I'm hoping to pull off at least 8 straight wins while bulldozing teams as the talent on the roster finally comes together
Jerry Sloan is the most ideal candidate after PJax. The only worries with Sloan is that he's too old and he may not have any fire left in him (he look exhausted his last few seasons with Utah, but that could just be frustration with dealing with Deron), and he might not be able to swallow the media storm that is NY, after being HC of the Jazz for 18 years.

That is very true. We're used to the fire and brimstone Sloan from the 90's Jazz giving PJax and Jordan all they could handle. Health wise it might not make sense for him either.

I agree but I do think Cal could have success in the NBA again. I thought he did a great job with the Nets. He lost his locker room because of trades, the lockout and Marbs. I know Larry Brown has always thought that he would have a lot of success in the NBA if he got the opportunity to come back.

Do you really think that Ewing will make a good coach. I don't see how he can succeed with his personality.

He taught Dwight and Yao how to play in the post. Proves he can teach. I don't know how he'd be as the top guy on a staff. He deserves a shot though after improving the games of 2 very good C's.
Brian Shaw. He's a Phil Jackson disciple, and is doing a good job as an assistant with the Pacers right now. Kobe, really wanted him for the Lakers Job.
Sloan would be my first pick after Jax. If retirement isn't sitting well with him and he still has the passion for coaching and is up to it, then I hope they make an offer if Woodson doesn't work out or if Jackson isn't interested.
Sloan intrigues the most after Jackson. I'd like to see if hw would utilize Lin like Jon Stockton, of course there has to be a partner to play the part of Malone.

I don't think he deserves a head coaching job because he taught a couple of players how to play in the post. Also, he did not have a great personality for NY as a player and certainly not as a coach.
I'd be shocked if Thibs leaves Chicago.
I would love it if JVG came back. I think we could win it all with him and this team.

Pipe dream - he hates Dolan more than we do. My favorite coach of all time.
JVG would have hard time with Melo. That's a disaster of a personality clash waiting to happen.
Sloan would be my second pick also sounds like he has interest according that one article but it quoted "sources" so who knows?

So you think that Sloan can do a better job than JVG with Melo? Sloan had a hard time with DWil - I would jump to the moon if we got either.

i dont think either one of them will have a hard time at all with melo. it hink both will have a hard time with ownership more than players.
