Thats not the point. Chandler has been great but that could have also turned into Howard and Paul/DWil.

This does not take away from Chandler but he is not worth two stars.

Step away from the bar and put the drink down. You are delusional.

oh, by delusional he meant that there is no way that would have happened. no way in hell. and you'd be praying it happened in the summer of 2013 with no tyson until then. great plan!

also, 2013 is the first year the new cap rules really hit, so the knicks would be trying to sign two superstars with melo making $20M and a $50M cap. SMFH

Tyson Chandler ended up being a good signing, even at the price we paid him, but my concern the day we were rumored to be amnestying Billups was that we needed to save it for Amar'e because eventually we'd have to use it on him. I didn't think we'd be talking about such a thing so early but yet here we are. We took a big risk signing this guy and it worked out for one season. This season has been up and down (mostly down) and now we have 3 more years of this. He's untradeable and uninsurable. Not sure what the league provisions are on retired/injured players but I hope there is some cap relief if we need to make a drastic move in the near future.

Does anyone know the deal with the cap? Didn't we have a similar situation with Allan Houston?

I know it's early, and who knows the extent of the injury, but still. This is not looking good.

Have to wait and see how he responds.

I think fans jump the gun a bit. Amnesty in my estimation would have been an issue at the end of NEXT season.

He gets lots of time. You don't just throw around 70plus million.

Nice girls. No tan lines!

Now, should we be concerned about making it into the play offs this season - yes! Should we be concerned that Stat might become LJ 2.0? Yes.

But we are far from having to talk about his contract killing us, whether we should have saved the amnesty for him, and when his retirement announcement will be.

He is shut down, and probably comes back last week or so of the season- hopefully.

If not, lets pray we get a top 5 pick and he comes back fully healthy next year, without the extra weight and that he figures out his posture.

He is not Curry- he is very disciplined and will do extrodinary things to make it back healthy, I have no doubt. I believe when his eye was hurt, he lay on his stomach for 22 hours a day. Just you try that.

But it's his second back injury in less than a year and he's only in the second year of his contract.

Plus, until a couple weeks ago, he was a bum this season.

No, you don't amnesty him today or even end of season, but when 2012-2013 is coming to a close, you start running it through the back of your head. Try to move him Summer 2013.

If we consider his performance this season, we can say that he never fully recovered from the last back injury! Now another back injury? He's not getting younger.

At least he will save his knees a little while healing his back, if you want to look at some bright sidie.

Whats your take on the tan lines?

mrKnickShot wrote:3+ years left. Amnesty gone. What can be worse at this point than that signing? And, not saving the amnesty for him? I am not blaming all these injuries on him because they were not necessarily his fault but this is fast becoming the next H20 disaster.

Some things in the Knicks favor,

1) The Arenas and Lewis contracts were moved, well for each other, but they were moved. I think it's proof any contract can be moved. But the conditions are usually a bad contract in return or you need to add in young players and picks for someone to take that bad contract. Right now if the Knicks were willing to give up Lin, I'd say you'd have 20 teams willing to take the STAT contract ( Lin is worth an easy billion to any franchise for the next ten years)

2) STAT is a big. He's not going to shrink. That's huge for value, even declining value. If you look at teams, they weren't cashing out their bigs, even the Warriors held onto Biedriens.

3) STAT is not a deficient long range shooter. I would not call him elite, but I think he can mold himself into a part time overpaid Stretch 4 power forward. He would need to improve his jumper a lot, but it's not like he's starting from scratch.

4) If STAT can't play anymore, while his contract isn't insured, the CBA has a provision for guys who medical out, meaning the Knicks could possibly avoid the last two years of his deal for salary cap purposes.

If the Knicks were willing to take 50 cents on the dollar, the Suns might still take STAT. STAT played his best with Nash, they have the noted best medical/training staff in the NBA that have prolonged the careers of Nash and Grant Hill, STAT knows the franchise already, his contract boils down to what they originally wanted, a 3 year deal, if he doesn't pan out, he's a two year clunker then a valuable expiring deal with the hope he might rebound his health enough to help Nash again and they would shed the bad contracts they picked up trying to replace STAT.

STAT
Toney Douglas
for
Hakim Warrick
Jared Dudley
Josh Childress ( Ugh...)
Channing Frye ( Welcome back home son)

Melo can slide to power forward and Dudley can stick at small forward ( Pesky defender, good offensive rebounder, high energy player, good BB IQ, can hit the three ball)

Frye can be the backup center and give you the three ball to space the floor and block shots. He's not going to help you on a fast break and has some limitations defensively. He's not going to clean the glass like you'd like, but maybe Melo's stronger rebounding can mesh well with him.

Warrick can play the low post and give you a little defense in the paint.

Childress can give you some offensive rebounding and gives Landry Fields someone to chat with about Stanford. Not sure what he is other than a guy rotting on the bench with a bad contract.

If the Knicks evaluate that STAT is done, but not done enough to get a medical out, then they get a starting small forward, some front line depth, some smaller bad contracts that might be easier to move than one large one, and at least get some assets that will play versus sit on the injured list the rest of his contract. Maybe a change of scenery will help both groups of players.

Suns did not want the liabilty on his contract.

Arenas Was Amnesty.

At this point NOBODY will touch this contract until there is some resolution of his condition.

The question is does insurance pick up his back?

The saving grace is he gets traded to a team that has its amnesty AND can handle the uninsured portion of his contract that we can't fund.

Satisfy those two questions then you can talk about a trade partner. Naturally your going to either have to take back some kind of bad contract to satisfy that teams uninsured portion or an offering of talent.

Nalod wrote:Suns did not want the liabilty on his contract.

Sure they will. Unlike the Knicks, and I think the fans here forget this sometimes, other cities don't have a lock on selling out to crowds, even in the lean years. Robert Sarver will probably lose Steve Nash this offseason, pretty much his draw for fans. If Nash leaves, and Hill leaves, what's left? Marcin Gortat? The Suns aren't going to attract prime free agents. STAT is already established there. He's also a "name" and often names last longer than real production. Plus the Suns would be shedding a ton of bad contracts.

If STAT plays, he draws enough of a crowd to keep Sarver happy. If he doesn't, he doesn't interfere with a youth movement or young guys getting minutes. Either way, he's one focal point of unrest, not the gaggle of bad contracts Sarver signed to try to replace STAT.

ANY contract in the NBA can be traded, it just depends on what you are willing to surrender. The Knicks don't need more star power, they need more sustainable depth ( Getting minimum contract guys to pan out and amnesty refugees, which is a fluke situation, won't cut it for the long haul)

I think fans here need to get past moving STAT for a pure asset and consider if his back is shot for good, that the best situation is a "my problem for your problem" type of trade.

Keep STAT and his bad back, on the injured list, and where is the vaunted depth for the Knicks? It's not in the front line. With STAT out, Jeffries plays more, which is great, but he's often the backup center. You give up STAT, you can get a wave of size to beef up the front line. It's not elite talent, but you can use a Childress and Warrick to hit people and make hard contact and give you hard fouls.

This is a team with little to no cap flexibility, no real draft picks for the next 2-3 years (burned them out in trades) and no real young talent with upside that can get them more front court support without blowing holes into the lineup. Trade is the best avenue to rearm for sustainable depth.
