Knicks · DAMN MDA woodson is making you look bad (page 27)

Panos @ 11/5/2012 9:22 AM
Woodson now 20-6 in regular season. Has everyone (including Melo) buying in, which MDA, nor any of the long series of coaches since JVG managed to do. We'll see if he can keep it up over the long term, but so far he's doing a bang up job. Keep it up Mike!

As much as I used to participate in this thread, I think there's a ton more to talk about now than an ex-coach who no longer is in and will never coach in the NBA again. That said I'm not telling people what they can and cannot post, just my 2 cents.

Woodson went 18-6 with the same roster D'Antoni had. At the end of preseason the tesm was too old, too injured and it was predicted that the offense would be too stagnant. Not sure what Woodson has to do to get credit for outcoaching the previous guy but even if you excuse the first two years of the D'Antoni debacle and count the years he had the players he was meant to coach, the guy still didn't do half the job Woodson has done.

Phoenix Is Ancient History

Let's pretend Mike D'Antoni was a bum in New York. In Phoenix, he had Steve Nash, The Matrix and Amar'e while his knees were relativel pain free. In New York, Mike D'Antoni was forced to coach a revolving door of players but that's exactly why he got the big bucks. Woodson inherited 13 new players on the roster and seems to have installed something D'Antoni could not.

Mutual respect and trust.

Once again i never compared him to woodson. In fact i think woodson is a superior coach. All i said was that MDA is a decent coach in the right system with the right players. I also said he doesnt preach defense which is why he will never be a good coach

He had Woodson on his staff last year and was really bad. When he left Woodson led the team on an 18-6 run that saved the season and kept the Knicks out of the lottery.

No, don't trust that wild assumption for a nanosecond. The difference?

The players respect and LIKE Mike Woodson. As a former player, he is one of them.

What Woodson is doing to motivate JR Smith, who wanted to start, is a patented Jedi Mind Trick.

Rasheed does not come out of retirement to play for Mike D'Antoni.

I think MDA can help a team as an offensive assistant coach.

The man got his team to 2 WCF's against at the time the stiffest comp in the league. He can do more than be an assistant coach. One day when he's refreshed after taken the beating he had to endure here he'll come back and do well again with some team. This just wasn't the place for him and lets leave it at that. I guarantee that if he had a Center like Tyson on his PHX team he would've won a title there. He lacked the size to get over the top against those teams out west. He's not a bad coach as some of you are trying to paint him. Woody can be a good coach here and MDA still also be a good NBA coach and not a good fit here. You can't extrapolate that one has to be bad just cuz the other works out.

He was bad here for 4 years. What a freakin relief to have a guy that emphasizes defense and communicates with his players. I can't believe D'Ant got to chose his fate last spring and wasn't fired. If he does well somewhere else good for him as long as he never coaches the Knicks again.

D'Antoni vs Mike Woodson

Bum Phillips (referring to Alabama head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant, with whom Phillips worked as an assistant coach at Texas A&M) could have been talking about the Knicks current head coach:

"He can take his'n and beat your'n and take your'n and beat his'n."

Tyson would not have won him a ring. He might have even sat on the bench. Tyson did not fit into the offense in the olympics.

Oh ... and wherever he goes next he better play that he brings with him a Steve Nash caliber player - not gonna happen.
