I don't watch Matt Barnes a lot but over the last years I always thought he was a above average defender (even very good at times) and serviceable on offense. I consider Fields way below both of those, especially his performance this year.
Fields is still making very rookie mistakes, and they are mind-boggling at times. How many times does he pass across court for an easy TO? How about all of the times where he slow fake pumps and does one stab dribble to no effect? What about the endless jump in the air before he has any clue where to pass the ball which inevitably ends up as TOs?
To me those are inexcusable. Fields had a very good first half of rookie season, but I keep thinking that he was the last guy defenses were worried about and that Amare, Gallo, Chandler, Turiaf, JJ, etc were kind of putting him in a position to just cut and rebound and scrap, which he was very good at.

yea... nice high IQ role player. Gets exposed a lot the more you ask him to do. Pretty sure we lose JR and Fields to teams will to overpay. Thats fine and thats business. The core of this team Im working around for the future is the eventual starting linup of Lin/Shump/Melo/Amare/Chander. Novak plays a great roll and could probably be kept w/ some small exception.
Unless Lin is willing to take about 1M a year, the Knicks will need to use part (most likely all) of the MLE to sign him. Fields does not require an exception to be signed. Adding a bigger named FA is a pipe dream....unless they accept the min or LLE.

I think it all depends on what another team is willing to pay him. Can you name a team that will give him 20-25M? He has played about what...10 games. Granted, he was really good for atleast 7 of them but still, would you gamble on that?
I would definitely be willing to pay Fields more than $1 mil. 2 years, $6 mil is fine. This year, he's played as a $1 mil player but if he can develop his jump-shot, he's worth much more than that. If not, it's a small loss. Players on salaries that low are easy to move anyway. This isn't like overpaying Amare by $60 mil.

I don't give him anything more than 1 million. If he develops his jump shot? Thats not what we should say about a SG going into his third year.

Lin played at least 20 minutes in 27 games...and started at PG for 25 of those games....

Lin pgFields will probably be gone in FA. The Knicks need to add a player like Odoms who can play Pf and sf. Hopefully they can add another pg who is younger. I hope that Smith doesn't come back need a more consistent shooter from SG position. Bring back Jefferies and Novak.
Odom would be dope but dude apparently can only play in Florida or LA as he needs a beach. Maybe someone should show him the hamptons.

Can we get him without The Kardashians?

He had a very good jump-shot his first year. You won't get something better for 2 or 3 mil a year. Are you worried he'd be untradeable making $2.5 mil a year? I don't get what the concern is.

He never had a "good jump shot". He had a set shot that was ugly, had zero arc and was going in for a while. They can probably do better in the D-League.
Odom would be great. If he played hard. Was younger. Wasnt a pothead (not hating). Wasnt more concerned about being married to Chewbacca then playing ball. The guy is DONE. Bring in hungry guys who will play hard like its their last chance in the league. Shawn Williams was hurt all year. I would take a flier on him. Odom = too much money and double the headaches. Pass

thanks andrew, and i just re-read a knickerblogger blog post about our situation as well.
so with fields its up to us to match/make an offer he gets if we choose to keep him.
i figured that the odom suggestion would involve a very low price, which i see as unlikely.
i'm mostly concerned with being able to keep the guys we have at this point other than smith who most here (understandably) believe will not be on the team next year.
sounds like we could use the bi-annual exception on either novak or jeffries, unless jeffries (more likely, i am guessing) takes the vet min, or we have some left over from re-signing lin.
Rookie wrote:I think our starting line up is set as long as we re-sign Lin. Hopefully we don't need to use the MLE for him and can target a veteran 6th man....Maybe Jason Terry if we can recruit him for the MLE. Smith is under contract unless he opts out, nothing we can do there, but I think he stays. Novak is going to be gone unfortunately unless he takes the veterans minimum....he's a good guy and I like him, but we just don't have the cap flexibility to re-sign him and someone will pay him more then the min. Odom could be a real possibility. Also, Sessions could opt out and we could look at him for the MLE
Novak..gone..novak didn't just learn how to shoot..he's the same player he always has been..but with more min comes a few more touches..thing is now he's on the scouting report heavy..and woodson has not used him like mda did where he's somehow left open a lot more...dont see him getting some big time offer just cause
nyk4ever wrote:i can see fields going back out to cali if given the chance by another team. he'd fit well with the lakers or warriors off the bench.personally - i wouldn't resign him. he doesn't shoot well enough to start at the two for us over shumpert (since amare is coming back and woodson has already said he'll start, so that slides melo back to the 3) and really he doesn't do a whole lot for us coming off the bench either, especially since he can't shoot or play above average defense. i'd keep our resources to resign smith, novak and jeffries.
Maybe Fields goes to the Warriors as part of a sign and trade - Amare+Fields for D Lee and Lil Nate! I know we'd do it - would Mark Jackson bite- looking for a "finisher" and believing in Amear more than Lee being able to help him? Seeing Fields as a god compliment to S Curry? I think Nate would be fine off the bench on this team-

I think its plausible to S+T Fields for a later first round pick to a team that wants more of a proven commodity at a good price. I dont know who helped Fields shot out--but it literally cost him tens of millions of dollars IMHO.

So Woody is using him wrong? Or maybe teams like you said have now scouted him? Or, he had a PG (LIN) to get him the ball.

I don't think you're right about Fields. He's only been in the league for two years so we don't have full Bird right, only early Bird rights like with Lin.
sorry, the title of the thread is "for all the marbles". I just don't see Fields as a key piece to the puzzle.
Our team is Stat, Melo, Chandler, Shumpert, Jorts, J Jordan & Douglass (and maybe Smith). We have no cap space, no draft picks and hopefully we can sign Lin....and we're worried about Fields
you guys have lost your marbles
I don't know about Lin. You know he wants his bird rights, but the team team is much better if he doesn't take the whole MLE. I think the knicks can get him for 2 yrs 6million. That would leave enough money to talk to Novack about staying too.
And the thing about Odom is the Mavs will likely buy him out for 2.5million, so he'll likely be a free agent. Don't know Odoms market, but may he would sign for the LLE.

maybe lin wouldn't take the whole mid-level but in any case we need to retain lin. i mean a young guard with great court vision and the ability to take teh ball to the hoop are not easy to find for a cheap price
