This!! This goes unnoticed too much. I can deal with the offensive inconsistency because he plays hard ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COURT. We don't have many players on this team who recognize the DEFENSIVE side of the game.
Plus, I like that him and Shump have a nice relationship on and off the court.
Pretty much. The guy would be an IDEAL 6th man. The problem now is he is being relied on too much and playing too many minutes. Plus its not like we have anyone to replace him.
If we could sign Lin to the QO and use the MLE on JR Smith I'd be ecstatic.

This kid is John Starks 2.0 in so many ways. His talents and physical gifts are impressive but his lack of consistency is a problem for him.His off court "problems" or "needs" make him a tough read on how to put a price on him.
While $2.5 million is low and I would expect him to opt out, I just wonder how much he is truly worth?
What are his work habits? The kid obviously has a ton of athletic ability and could be a star in this league.
He is fun to watch but I can't peg his role or the type of money he is worth.
John Starks 2.0 is a stretch. The guy is definitely talented, but doesn't have Starks heart. I wouldn't break the bank for this guy. We need guys who can break down a defense and dish the ball. We haven't had any depth at point guard in more than 10 years.
JR is a flake- its a short season so we didn't see some character issues come up, but he's a total flake off the floor and you have to be wary of the guy. That being said he is very close with Melo so they will probably try to retain him.
The problem with J.R is he gets caught up in the moment too much. He's showmanship type player that feeds off the energy of the crowd. Let's say he makes 4 three pointers in the row. You bet his next shot will be a 3 point attempt.
is it safe to say he's got a heating up and cooling off period? Nothing consistent at all.
he's worth $7 or 8 million a year for however many years can be offered now. He's an appealing third option

I agree with you here, he passes just as much as melo, and that ain't much.
The good thing for the knicks, is they got some solid core guys that will attract players who will play for less.
Nobody is tossing the entire MLE at players going fwd, I can't remember the break down of the new CBA, but it certainly didn't benefit the player..
Either way, if J.R leaves he can be replace, we do have a competent management running things for once..

JR Smith > Nick Young and Young wanted like 9 million a year.
Pretty much though your estimates are spot on. He is worth more than MLE so he is as good as gone.

The CBA limits what teams with more cash can pay.
I dont see contracts getting way smaller. I see guys following the money to smaller market teams. I dont think JR Smith would want to play in Milwaukee but if they were the highest bidder he'll be playing there.
Please enlighten us to players of his caliber that will take the LLE?
In telling CSNNW that he is going to test the market, Crawford said: "After talking with my agent, it was a no-brainer. The whole plan all along was to secure a one-year deal so I could hit the market again this offseason.
"I had a couple of (current) playoff teams that offered me a deal that was double what I was making this year but I wanted to wait. Now I get the chance to go through an entire free agency period due to having a rushed offseason last year.
"At the end of the day, I wanted to (opt out) quick out of respect for Portland and just because I've opted out doesn't mean I don't want to return. But I'll definitely look at my options this summer."
So Crawford could be back in Rip City. It's not likely, but it's possible. What's more likely is Portland using that extra $5 million in cap space to put toward its summer rebuilding project. The Blazers have a lot of holes to fill, and Crawford is certainly not the first player we're going to see leaving for free agency. There are a handful of expiring contracts on this roster, and I have no doubt Portland doesn't intend to bring back many of them.Source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/jamal-crawf...
Food for thought.
He's not worth it, hope he doesn't come back next year. We lose any kind of lead when he's in; missing shot after shot.
If he accepts a long-term deal, its looking like an avg of 6.5 a year. I can't imagine him being worth any more. And if I was Jay-Z, I would be hitting up his agent already. He'd be great in Brooklyn, and since he already got the NY connection and Brooklyn needs some pieces to keep Derron around, that might be the perfect 6th man for them.
I wouldn't want them to sign Smith to a long term deal. He's made some big plays on both ends of the court but I worry about signing someone long term who doesn't always seem to have his head in the game. I don't believe he is going to get any better at it.
I definitely see some John Starks in him with a touch of Jamal Crawford. He has to get a sic handle to bea complete JC.
His talent is off the charts, his shot selection is off the charts (wrong way), his defense has been surprisingly excellent and versatile
really mixed on him
He's been in the league a long time and hasn't really improved his offensive game. Done nothing to become more efficient. Just don't see him as being more than a 3-4 million player.

He's not. This is an example of people overpaying for PPG and flashiness. And he may have played good defense for half of a season in a contract year, but he definitely is not known as a good defender.
With the old NBA salary cap model, JR Smith might be worth $8 million for 5 years. With this model, if he even gets more than the MLE, I'd be surprised. There isn't much flexibility at all now, so smart teams are saving it for stars, because it's easy to get into luxury tax hell and get annihilated now. That being said, we won't be able to keep both JR Smith and Jeremy Lin. With that being the case, I choose Lin in a heartbeat.
I think its easier to draft or pickup a guy like JR Smith than it is to find another starting PG.
Guys are still going to get paid.
Please name any SG's available who are better than JR Smith?
Inconsistent chucker, addition by subtraction.
AnubisADL wrote:Guys are still going to get paid. Please name any SG's available who are better than JR Smith?
Guys are not just going to get paid. The playing field has been leveled too much. For the teams that have the money, they ultimately won't use it because the luxury tax penalties are too steep. That means less money for everyone.
