Knicks · JR Smith Staying? (page 1)

JR Smith ‏ @TheRealJRSmith
I think I'm going to build my house in #NJ this summer! #random

He thinks ? Does that mean anything?

I hope someone can convince him to build a house in Miami instead.

Im not a big JR guy especially since his playoff perfomance was so putrid but i dont mind keeping him for his 2.5 million dollar option.

In an article his 1st 3 weeks here his agent said something along the lines of he intended to opt in unless something crazy happened. I guess people forgot about it since it was a couple times months ago.

Woodson seems to have a fondness for him despite his poor play. Hopefully the accountability that is being preached is used in JR's case when he plays poorly.

dont get me wrong he did well dyring the regular season but he is not worth more than that player option. Like i said if he picks it up then its a good deal buut if he opts out then see ya

Is he coachable at this stage of his career?

Meh, he is just playing around again

I don't believe him.

I think a few teams can muster 4-5 million for a 1 yr deal.

That's what I think too. Phill is Lucy with the football and NYK fans are Charlie Brown.

poor shooting, not poor play. Knick fans have no attention span.

the guy defended (well) and gave it his all. His shot wasn't falling but he surprised pretty much everyone with his defense, passing and willingness to by in. Hopefully he shoots better next season because personally I found his as far more a positive than a negative and at the end of the day it is much more than I ever expected.

poor shooting, not poor play.

Shooting is a key part of overall play.

the guy defended (well) and gave it his all.

He managed to do that in half of one season in a contract year. He does not have a reputation for being a good defender. What do you think will happen when he gets a long-term contract?

Go back to the pre-JR threads. When I brought up the "JR don't D", I got video after video of him playing Kobe, playing D, sealing people off, making steals, etc etc...

Did you really think that half a season of JR was NOT going to provide any number of off-court antics? He's worth signing just so we possibly don't start Fields anymore.

If he is broke like it is reported then I can imagine his priority would be financial security.

If we keep him and obtain the bird rights can we then give him longer term security?

He does play defense and can create his own shot.

Can he become an even better player? He has great tools.

I'm not talking about the future, just defending what he did this season. Dude did not play like trash and shooting is but ONE part of basketball. If that were the case we wouldn't love Shump who, unless I'm mistaken is an even worse shooter (Never see you dog Shump for his lack of such a key component.)

I hope he comes back and I believe he never felt wanted in Denver they way Woodson values him. I hope he comes back for cheap.

JR was a big reason the Knicks got crushed in the playoffs. He was terrible in games 3,4,5 and I have never seen someone take so many bad shots in one game as he did in game five.

A stop and go crossover hesitation into a spin move fading away out of bounds behind the 3 point line to start the third quarter. He much like Melo is a ball stopper. Re watch the games and see how many open shots the knicks lost because he is braindead. He makes Crawford look like he's got the IQ of Nash out there.

Against the Heat the Knicks put the ball in JR's hands way more than usual and forced him to make decisions because they did not have a PG on the floor half the time. Even when they did, it was Bibby who deferred to JR too often. I would take JR back with a reasonable salary and as the first guy off the bench ......in a flash. This is what he is.....a good SG off the bench who is super athletic and plays tough on the ball D. He is a streak shooter who can take a game over, but often has bad misses.....so he needs a strong PG out there with him. At less than $3 mil I'll take him any day.

the main reason why we got crushed in the playoffs was because we were OUTMATCHED!
I am not happy with the style, Melo played either but he had 0 confidence with the lack of scorers we had vs a talent like Miami.
It's not like we had a lot of options, going isolation the way he did, is bad, but we had no players with the ability to POST UP or PENETRATE vs this Heat defense.
If Melo was going to lose and have the media bashing him, he might as well try to take over, have the highlights, and put big numbers up to shut those analyst up.

JR Smith takes bad shots but he is our 2nd best player, aside from Melo, that had the ability to create his own shot.
But he just missed majority of good shots, while actually hitting the bad ones.
Amare CANNOT create his own shot, it doesn't give an excuse for him to be such a horrible defender and rebounder though.

Playing Miami is tough, especially with all these injuries, and playing with injured/not fully healthy players to begin with.
Only way to lower their chances of the fast break is to SCORE.
If they grab a rebound or if we TO, we have almost no chance at giving up a dunk or layup.
To beat Miami, you have to make shots and make it harder for them to score.
It sounds so simple but is very hard to achieve and we just didn't have enough talent.
Honestly, our best defenders ,without injuries, we would still have problems.
Even if we had our half court set up vs Miami, without Iman, a broken JJ *need him with Chandler*, JR Smith, Melo to have a good defensive game, and a good team effort defensively.

We could have moved the ball a million times and run in circles, we would have still lost, at the very best not get killed and win 1 extra game.
Sure, I would have liked to see better picks, aside from the PnR, to free up Novak, and draw more option plays.
It would have been great if Amare and TC were able to establish post position like they did when Woodson first took over.
If Novak would actually get more plays run for him as an option, aside from staying in the corner, waiting for a shot.
GOOD DEFENSIVE teams, will not leave Novak open, especially in playoff basketball.

JR Smith is worth much more than his contract, I won't blame him or Melo for this blowout series.
Truth is, the shots he missed, we might not even get a shot off or get a better look.
It was over when Iman blew his knee out for sure, with TC catching a flu on top of it.
Having JJ defense during the Linsanity stretch with good team defense, and penetration from Lin opened the games up.
Having that ball movement is great, but Miami is just too much for us.

I think that if JR stays fr his contract and we have 3 healthy bodies at PG next season, we will be in better shape than this year. JR was more effective when he had the ball less as a distributor and more like a catch-and-shoot / create your own shot kind of shooting guard. This postseason he played PG for many minutes, which can only spell doom for a team with Melo, Amar'e and Chandler. JR is a good backup 2 that is more effective under control or without too many assignments.
