You won't get anything for him right now so I would keep him. I think he can regain his shooting and I do like when he's aggressive around the rim. Right now he has to be coming off the bench as part of the second unit. Maybe 15 min a night untill he starts to perform. Sadly, I think his ceiling is alot lower than what most(including myself) once thought.

He's an SG without a jump-shot. They exist. You aren't getting Ray Allen in his prime for one-third the MLE. We need to stop thinking we can get lots of excellent players and start asking which scraps are good deals. Getting a guy worth $2 mil (and therefore a useful but significantly below average player) for only $1 mil is a great deal.
Without a jumpshot and who cant defend other sgs and turns the ball over way too much because he is not a ball handler which is a must for a guard unless ur a spot up 3pt shooter which he clearly isnt. You dont think Lins life is made easier playing with a legitimate ball handling sg?
I think an SG who has all of those things will be unavailable to us. Fields definitely doesn't commit many turnovers though. Look at the #s. He commits an occasional, ugly turnover that stands out in your memory.
Bonn1997 wrote:Landry's shot is ugly and he's easy to laugh at. If I told people, though, that following second-year shooting guard were available, they'd think he was worth much more than the LLE. Per 36 minutes
Points: 11.0
FG%: .460 (TS% = .505)
Rbs: 5.3
Ast:TO ratio: 3.2:1.9
Blks: .3
Stls: 1.5
Other than the shooting %, these numbers are very good for an SG actually. He's a player who is illogically devalued. His worth is much more than the $2 or 3 mil (about one-third to half the average NBA player) he would get paid. That's exactly the kind of FA you should be targeting while other teams go for the less effective, more athletic, gaudier players.
Great post.
That same shooting guard has achieved those numbers while having to adjust his game to the new Melo-centric offense, a coaching change and loss of playing time.
He is good. You keep good.

I'm pretty sure field is practicing his jumpers as we type..He is a very smart 4 yr ivy league school grad..im almost sure if we retain JR, fields won't start.
With a little luck, JR will sign with another team.

Now Fields is a SG. I guess it changes with people's argument. I say he is a bad sg,"no he is playing out of position." Poor Guy. Work hard this summer Landry.
If Fields comes back with the same jump shot, he's going to get run out of town. I think he knows his career depends on him finding it. I hope he can pull it off. That is if he comes back.
Landry Fields Qualifying offer is 3 million bucks. If the knicks MLE Lin that is half of the knicks cap space left.
Fields is likely gone.

I don't see ant way in h3!! OKC gives up Perk and Harden. Those are two big reasons for their current success. Giving up Chandler might get you Perkins and change but no way Harden come with him. and I'd really hate to see chandler go or do you guys remember how soft we were in the middle before he got here?
I like Fields and the shooting is one of the things that has shown to come in time.Even Rondo shoots better these days. He is a bargain at his price point and he has been durable.

I didn't think he has a QO. He's unrestricted.
Knicks have Landry Fields "Early Bird Rights" so they can match anything or let him go, and have Jeremy Lin's one year "Bird Rights" or "Gilbert Arenas Provision" so they can match any offers as well.

Right. And I think he'll command a 3 year deal, looking at an average of 2.0 - 2.5 a year. I think the guy is worth that off the bench. But another club might go hard to get him into their starting rotation, and if he's offered a guaranteed starting spot to open the year, he'd be foolish not to want it and his agent would definitely pursue it. Now, that would mean in negotiations with NY he'd have to be given the starting nod, at least at the beginning of the year assuming Shump is still out.
I did see him picking up on some Melo moves throughout the year. That might account for the loss in his shot. But his ball handling and defense are liabilities. Gotta see an improvement in those 2 categories for next year. But I think he is a solid backup 2/3 right now at that price.
Landry regressed in every aspect of his game. Had he kept rebounding as he did last season and, very early this season, his value might be better but, with no jumpshot and the drop off on his rebounding, he can't possibly be worth (as a player) as some of you are saying. Shooting guards who can't shoot, don't average more than 3 assists are a dime a dozen. We'd be better off looking in the D-League for a replacement than going another year with Landry as SG.
DurzoBlint wrote:Landry regressed in every aspect of his game.
I disagree. His leaping ability and toughness at the rim improved. His footwork going towards the basket (when he kept his dribble which honestly was most of the time) improved. His ability to slip behind the defense improved dramatically.
I know those aren't what you might want to see improvement in, but it is what it is.
DurzoBlint wrote:Had he kept rebounding as he did last season
With Tyson in the middle and Anthony improving his boards he wasn't around the rim as much as before.
For the 8 games where both Stat and Melo were out he:
- averaged 6.0 rebounds per game, comparable to is 6.4 average his rookie season.
- averaged 9.6 ppts a game, comparable to his 9.7 his rookie season.
- He shot 47% from the field, near both his 49% from last year and 46% this year.
- During that same stretch he averaged 2.0 TO's a game. Ouch.
Now his FT% and 3PT% stunk during that time too, just as it did all year.
I don't know if I just made a case to keep him or let him go. Damn.

the times he was able to get to the basket were so rare as not to be worth mentioning. He can't hit that crucial corner 3 or make that floater he insisting on putting up and is a liability on defense.
If he's going to be playing shooting guard we need more.
I agree that Chandler's presence may have effected his rebounding but, that just lessens his value either way. No shooting, no rebounding, an inability to break anyone down off the dribble can't be washed away because of improved leaping ability and the rare instance he manages a dunk which, only happens when he gets a clear lane or the rare cut he makes to the rim.

I was reading it more as we need more from Fields if we keep him. Hope it's a productive offseason.

Yeah, that makes more sense.

How can we believe he will bring anything more to the table. He did nothing to improve his shooting last off-season. In fact his shooting got worse, which makes me question his work ethic. Can anyone name any tangible improvement that he actually made between years 1 and 2. Shooting didn't seem any better, neither did his ball handling which, as a 2guard, needs to be better.
As of right now, he is Shandon Anderson with less defense.
