we better not he isnt worth it. The most he is worth is his player option
He is absolutely worth it for us...He played incredible defense for us...He took over games for us at time...If you look at the playoffs, we need players who isn't afraid of the moment like lots of players we have seen disappear in the playoff...He is an essential bench player...I'm really surprised at the vitriol he gets from this board...A player who can get his own shot off and plays defense are few and far between...
He is absolutely not worth it for us did you happen to watch the playoffs? Like I said if he wants to pick up his option then tahts fine but he isnt worth more. We need to now look into nash, allen, kidd, felton. we need a good back pg and we need another shooter not a streaky shooter like JR
Nash and Kidd is 40 years old, we need a vet who can play heavy minutes...You can't ask a rookie like LIn to compete in the type of basketball on a level we saw the last two weeks...Ray Allen would definitely be a great addition which makes JR and Novak expendable...I'm ok with that IF Allen signs...But resigning JR does nothing to you cap...We don't have many options out there...
like i said player option is fine but he is not worth using the whole midlevel on him. I mean you are probably the only fan willingg to do that lol. Also Nash is probably in better shape then guys 10 years younger. Now I love lin but if we could get nash and have lin as a back up then it would HUGE
Why do you keep doing this??...I never said I was willing to give him the MLE...I was questioning whether or not he falls under Bird's rights as well so we can retain him without giving the MLE or the LLE...Bro u are a spin doctor...
actually you never mentioned birds rights to be honest. We were talking about being able to use the MLE on others and you said we should use it on Smith. We dont have Smith's birds rights and second of all we have other needs than a streaky shooter
Refering the the topic, I clearly asked if this applied to JR Smith as well???...Please show me where I said I would use the MLE on JR Smith..
well if thats what you meant ok i apologize but i didnt know because you didnt say bird rights so i wasnt sure what you are referring to
But you said we were talking about using the MLE on JR...When did that conversation occur?
No I meant i was talking with a another poster not you. It was a simple mistake because talking on a computer is different than talking in person so things could get mixed up. Anyway back tlo the topic if JR wants to pick up his option thats ok but i would spend more money on him because he is too inconsistent
so just to clarify...by winning the birds rights, that means:
1. we can keep Lin (approx $5mil) and Novak (approx $3 mil) without worrying about going over the cap
2. we have the MLE (midlevel exception - approx $5 mil)
3. we have the LLE (lowerlevel exception - approx $3mil)
4. we still have the vet minimums?
5. we can still keep JR if he decides to stay for $2.5mil
6. we can still keep and sign our draft pick ($1 mill)
so ideally we could get:
1. Lin/Novak
2. Nash
3. Odom
4. Camby
5. JR
6. #48 draft pick

not exactly. more likely the knicks will be able to keep lin and novak, but only use $3M of their MLE so they can still sign players throughout the year, which they wouldn't be able to do if they used their $5M exception - they'd be completely capped out even for 10-day contracts.
so they'd have $3M exception, the $1.8M LLE and vet minimums and lin and novak. and the ability for JR smith to pick up his player option, too.
i think trading landry for something becomes a good idea with this set of circumstances.
my ideal world for the knicks this summer would be:
sign Lin for $5M per year for 3yrs.
sign Novak for $3M per year for 3yrs.
sign Lamar Odom for $1.8M LLE for 2yrs.
sign Jamal Crawford for $3M MLE for 2yrs.
trade Landry Fields for a draft pick or a backup PF.
draft a backup PG or backup PF.
convince JR to pickup his option.
Lin, Crawford, backup PG
Shump, JR, Crawford plays here, too which helps with Shump out
Melo, Lamar
Amar'e, backup PF (Lamar plays here, too), Jeffries
Tyson, Jorts, Jerome Jordan
so basically we have the MLE at $5mil but we should probably shouldnt use all of it in case we need to sign somebody during the season
why is everyone talking about nash then? theyre assuming we would spend the FULL $5mil MLE on him? i think he wants more than that
i also think:
1. we can use tDoug as the back up
2. we can convince JR to stay
3. sign odom for LLE
4. sign camby for vet mini
5. maybe bring back felton for MLE at $3mil
6. im not the biggest fan of fields but we need him esp since shump is out

All realistic options, except Crawford opted out of his 5mill 1year contract deal with Portland to make less than he would if he would stay in Portland and sign a veteran deal anywhere. I am not so sure about Crawford and JR Smith together with Melo would work so well either. But we all have our own opinions, I respect yours.
And you left Novak out of the rotation, not sure if you forgot about the 3m you wanted to pay him for the next 3 years.
I agree with trading Fields if we can get something decent back in return, I just don't see him SG or ever able to defend starting SGs consistently.
If he ever does develop a shot, he would be a good SF, but how many minutes can we actually give him in that position with Melo/Novak here?
It may not seem realistic, but IMO Nash would mean more to this team than any player they might possibly add during the year. We're talking about a player that is still one of the best PG's in the league and who is ready to help a team win now. Nash doesn't have to try and figure it out. He already knows what to do and we've seen that this team needs someone like that. Nash almost got his team to the playoffs again this year and they were a pretty weak team. Nash will be able to run a offense when he's 50. If he'd accept the MLE i'd give it to him. I'm shocked that after witnessing how important a real PG is to this team this year that so many don't recognize how much of an impact having Nash would make.
I read that Nash many not be too happy with the Knicks org. and how they treated MDA, but hopefully this isn't really a true story. We can add other PG's or SG's but IMO none put us over the top or even get us close to the Heat like Nash could. That being said, i'd be OK with Felton or Sessions. Jamal is another guy that could help.
i agree that nash would be perfect but i dont think he wants to come here...plus hes too expensive
therefore i vote
1. sign felton to MLE
2. sign odom to LLE
3. sign camby to mini vet...
4. keep everyone else including fields and jr
PG lin/felton
G fields/jr (shump)
C tyson/camby
PF stat/odom
F melo/novak
im not his biggest fan but we need fields for now..

i would be happy with this plan, though i don't think camby comes here for the vet minimum.

problem is if anyone gets hurt we're stuck.
it would be a risky move. that being said, i'd probably do it anyway.

We need to add shooters. I think we need to use the mid level on a SG. My order of preference for the mid level is
1. Ray Allen 2. OJ Mayo 3. Belinelli 4. C Lee
and then use the LLE on a PG like Kidd. We will still need to address the big man depth, but i think that would be the only weakness with this group
C Chandler/Harrellson
PF Stoudemire/Jeffries
SF Anthony/Novak/Fields
SG Allen or Mayo/Shumpert (maybe Smith too)
PG Lin/Kidd/rookie

- JJ and harrellson are NOT good players and theyre injury prone. we need frontcourt depth (odom)
- kidd and nash will NOT come to NYK...
- mayo would be nice to have; just dont know if we could afford him (at 3-5mil MLE)
- hopefully JR will stay and take the option (2.5mil)

Ray Allen looked pretty much done last season and I think OJ Mayo will demand more than the MLE. I do like Belinelli and Lee and would be pretty happy if we signed them.

I like both of them too. Not sure what Mayo has done to warrant more than the mid-level outside of his reputation as a high-potential player.
i dont think we should go after an SG...only because
1. we have three (yes, im including JR cuz i think hell return)
2. most importantly i think it will slow the development of shumpert when he returns
3. we need front court depth...JJ is injury prone and jorts is a minor league player

I think it's his reputation as a high-potential player. I could definitely see a team like the Nets overpay him on the chance he can be really good.

Shump, JR, and Fields? Shump tore his ACL and won't be back for awhile. Plus, he was a terrible shooter last year. JR might be back, he might not. Fields can't shoot and has been terrible for a year and a half now.
For me, I'm not necessarily looking for a SG to replace the guys we have, I'm looking for guys who can shoot from range. The most obvious spot we upgrade our long-distance shooting is at SG.

Do you think Shannon Brown, Gerald Green or Pietrus might be a possibility?
i hear what ur saying...pietrus or shannon brown (i thought he signed a 4 yr deal last yr) would be great...i just dont want to slow the development of shump (should b back by jan)
