Yup. We would still have about $3Mill of the MLE to throw at someone, then the LLE and Veteran's minimum also.
are u sure? I cant see how we would have jr's bird rights plus we'd be well over the luxury tax. My understanding is signing jr dips into the mle or lle. You dont get to use both. One or the other. In this case you let jr walk and keep fields on the bench as insurance and hope he one day develops a shot or at least becomes a better defender. All he does well is debound right . If we don't have to dip into the mle to retain jr I would not have a problem with him off the bench. You can always trade him for a pick once shumo gets back. A playoff team looking for bench scoring will certainly go after him.

From Howard Beck:
By opting out, the eight-year veteran not only stands to receive a 20% raise, but also sign a long-term contract with the Knicks. According to Beck, the team would be able to offer Smith a four-year contract worth approximately $12.2 million without dipping into their Midlevel Exception. Instead, New York will own "non-Bird Rights" for his new potential contract.
Basically similiar to Lin, we can resign JR without dipping into the MLE.
Wow seems stern is doing everything to help the knicks. How lucky have we been! We should be dead in the water if all we had was melo & amare after trading hakf them team. The rules allowed us the rules allowed us to amnesty billups, add tyson, add lin, add novak, add jr and now this. Man I cant wait for the season to start!
wheres ronron or knixkik (our inhouse salary cap experts)!?!?
whats the deal with JR opting out...im confused...is he accepting the 2.8mil and staying ...or do we have to pay him the MLE as part of the raise?
Create a market via media and make sure your home team knows about it!

Except, of course, Stern is appealing the decision that helped the Knicks so much.
Whats the obsession with camby? And why the hell keep harrelson over smith? trade fields

No MLE involved. It's either 1 yr deal at $2.8m, or 4 year, $12.2m with Knicks. Or he can sign elsewhere if he pleases.

Because be represents tbe owners and has to make it look like he is pleasinv them
With Smith and possibly Foye, I wonder if Grunwald moves Fields.

He has no value. Bring him back to take billy walker's old role on the end of the bench and to please Lin. Lin may leave if you get rid of his nerdy handshake buddy. If Fields is the reason we go slightly over the luxury threshold then goodbye

I think the writer of the article doesn't know what he is talking about. Or with the New arbitration to Early Bird Rights, the judge gave, teams with 1 year early bird rights by accident. Because writers seem to think we can sign Novak to an extension for 3m when his last contract was a 1 year deal. So I am not sure if this would stick or if a bunch of writers just got it wrong?
I think its just 1year at 2.8m, and then we could get his early bird rights from there or MLE in which I would have no interest in

We can keep him on as our in house sabermetrician - and, that would NOT count against our cap

Only downside he's not much of a creator, which means the ball will run through Melo which isnt a positive. We need a PG who can run an offense, not hand the ball off to Melo to pound at the elbow while everyone stands and watches.. but as a backup? Pretty good.
Guess that's where Kidd comes in to backup Lin at the veteran's minimum. I would take Foye, Kidd, and Odom in a heartbeat as they would fit our roster and needs perfectly.
I'm loving this but we run into a similar issue from last season, being overstacked at all positions.
If we win the appeal, keep EBRs, sign Lin,Fields,Novak, re-sign JR... add Foye, Kidd, Odom, this team is tooooooo much. Miami and OKC ran with max 8-man rotations in the finals.
Lin/Kidd
Foye/Smith/Fields/(Shumpert)
Anthony/Novak
Stoudemire/Odom
Chandler/Harrelson
At least one guy has to go in this scenario. I say you let Smith walk, keep Fields because he can stretch to the 3, plays well with Lin, and costs less. Then you pick up a PF/C in the draft at 48. Acy/Gates/Sacre
When Shumpert is healthy, trade someone for a bench role player and a future draft pick. We need more in future drafts due to Melo trade.
Too much?? Who cares about 8-man rotations. Fields will probably have Toney Douglas like mintues. Novak wont see too many mintues and neither will Harrelson. With that being said, you still want all these guys on your roster in case of injury. These guys ARE ROLE PLAYERS no need for trades. This would be the perfect scenario. I would hate to see the season go down the drain because we don't have quality guys on the bench to fill in during an injury or when someone is having an awful Melo-like stretch or an Amar'e like season. In no way would I view this as being "overstacked".
We have enough players shooting .390 already. It's not like he makes up for it with outstanding passing.

Midrange game could improve but the paint is packed already im ok with him being the one guy camped out at the 3pt line while lin, melo and tyson do their thing

We can't be picky. If he wants to come here for the vet min, I'm OK with that. We can't give him any portion of the MLE though.
Bye Fields. Been nice knowin ya.
If Foye isn't shooting threes he isn't scoring. He is one of those players where his three point FG is his shooting percentage. I'm gonna pass on Foye.
The reason why foye is intruiging is he can shoot AND move over to pg
callmened wrote:The reason why foye is intruiging is he can shoot AND move over to pg
Foye is not a good player. He is a disaster waiting to happen.
