Knicks · Fields agree to 3-year deal with Toronto (page 8)

So because we will let Landry Fields to walk and go to Toronto what do we get in compensation since he was a restricted free agent

Nothing, restricted free agency means we have the right to match, not that we get compensation. We could threaten to match the contract and force Toronto to give us something in a sign and trade but I don't think Toronto wants Landry now that Nash is in LA.

Nalod @ 7/5/2012 6:55 AM

Its good to see Lando got good money and Im sorry to see the kid go. 2nd round pick rise up to start and now have some nice money. I hope it leads to starters minutes and his shot returns.

Yeah, I hate to see an ex knick get better and we don't derive the value from that skill upgrade either by his play or thru trade.

Bottom line is when Melo came thru the door Lando's shot left him. With Melo on the floor his shot selection became a problem and perhaps his confidence. I hate we could not use him in a sign and trade anywhere but its part of the game. Fleece and get fleeced.

Toronto gonna feel the sting in two years paying him but maybe it all works out. They cockblocked us from Nash (maybe) and they are still coming up empty for a pt guard. Im sure they will make a run for lin.

jrodmc @ 7/5/2012 8:16 AM
Have fun paying all those taxes, Mr. Stanford.

Maybe the colder air and higher Canadian barometric pressure will add some arc to that disgusting POS j. Good riddance.

Now starting at SG for your NY Knicks, JR Smith.

Maybe Toronto would give us something for Billy Walker or Toney Douglas in a S&T?

we haven't let him walk yet. he can't officially sign the offer sheet until 7/11. Knicks have until 7/14 to match.

i kind of hope they match at this point.

crzymdups @ 7/5/2012 8:28 AM
I think it's funny that people automatically assume the knicks won't match on Fields. The team hasn't said anything yet and they have until 7/14 to decide.
3yrs $19M is not that big an offer.

I think the team should re-sign Fields for the following:

1) the team is capped out beyond belief until Amar'e, Tyson and Melo's deals all expire in 3 years. It makes sense to have Landry on board for that period.

2) the team is low on assets. If landry performs up to his contract, he's still tradeable.

3) the team is low on guys who can capably play the shooting guard position. whether that's landry's natural fit or not, he's played it before and we need coverage there until probably next March when Shump is ready.

4) it allows the team to have depth and create two units with different looks, especially with the Felton signing:

Shift 1:
Lin
JR Smith
Melo
Novak
Tyson

Shift 2:
Felton
Fields
Shawne Williams
Amar'e

I think he can improve his shot, but he just didn't compliment our team after we added Melo.
He was playing good basketball again, when he was playing SF during Linsanity.
He just won't get many minutes there with Melo, cannot defend SGs, and needs to play with players that playing team ball.
He needs good IQ players that constantly moving/cutting, hitting the open man, and using what the movement he does.

Field's isn't worth the contract he received on our team, but he is much better than we credit him for.
Only his final year, is a HORRIBLE deal, but not worse than the 5 years that that we invested on Amare and Melo.
I wish him the best in Toronto, he did what was best for him, and we cannot fault him for it.

I am pretty sure fields couldn't be traded on draft night. I believe Hahn explained why but prior to hearing he couldn't be trade I thought the Knicks might try to move him.

Bonn1997 @ 7/5/2012 8:43 AM
If we're gonna be over the cap and have no flexibility anyway, then we need to match this offer. 11 Pts, over 5 rbs as an SG, over 3 assists, and less than 2 turnovers per 36 min? No matter how distracted people are by the occasional ugliness of Field's game, his production even in a down year was solid.

while i do absolutely agree with you, you have to think that dolan is going to take the salary-tax threshold into consideration before giving grunwald the go-ahead.

This would be the first time he's ever done that. He was paying $100M a year with Layden and Isiah to win 30 games a year. If he was willing to break the bank then I don't see why he wouldn't now.

Did anyone read Bill Simons tweet about the deal, which went something like: "kudos to Toronto: anytime you can pay $20 mil to an 11th man in order to give $36 million to a 38 year old point guard, you gotta do it!", perfect description of the move!

That is a good one. Sums up the scenario perfectly

It wont be JR. He doesnt fit with melo, amare & lin. That is why he didnt start in the playoffs even over Landry Fields. Maybe with real pgs jr can be better. I still say add a sg who can actually shoot to help lin, melo & amare and space the floor

DJMUSIC @ 7/5/2012 6:19 PM
Still dont like losing L.Fields for nothing

do not think he's been as much as a bum in NY as due to poor play inconsistency

He can only get better with some team, NY losing youth with some potential isnt good.

Dont want to make a big thing about Fields but he isnt as bad as recent, We needed to get something out of this

I'm tired of losing young players but doing deals where we chuck others for washed up role players or $$ guys whom aint worth it

Fields is at least worth more than still Knick T.Douglas and at least merit some draft pick

I think Lin and Kidd will start together in the backcourt and finish games, too.

Mray20 @ 7/5/2012 6:29 PM
Let Landry go 7 mil a year for a shooting guard that can't shoot or handle no thanks I've seen enough and if they do match and he continues to stink it up there will be no getting rid of that contact until it expires. The reason JR didn't start is not because he can't play with STAT and Melo it's because they needed offensive firepower off the bench when the starters sat.
Syniko @ 7/5/2012 6:56 PM
Landry freaking Fields 20 million? Toronto got screwed at their end of the deal.
Bonn1997 @ 7/5/2012 6:58 PM
6 mil per is about what the average NBA player makes. Fields is above average in all the major areas of the game except scoring efficiency, which he was a little below average in last year.

I can see him fading out into obscurity and getting bounced around the league for the next five or six years before heading off into an early retirement.

Field was the worst starting shooting guard in the NBA last season and that is a fact he is not above average at all , can't shoot , can't post up can't put the ball on the floor and his defense is supsect, he's only good at cutting and in the open court because he can jump pretty high. Even when before Amare got here he was averaging 9 points a game not exactly lighting it up and worth 7 mil a year.

He's mediocre and I'm happy he's gone. Sure, he's a lovable guy but... Maybe in that small window of Linsanity, we saw potentials. Lin was going out of his mind and Knicks were feeding off his energy. It was addictive and addicting to watch but that was about as good as it got for Fields. We'll never hear from him again.

OasisBU @ 7/5/2012 7:36 PM
Landry Fields sucks - get OJ Mayo and re-sign JR.
