Knicks · Steve Nash to Lakers (page 6)

Yeah that seems to be the reason. He requested the Lakers. A lot of class by the Suns to say yes and trade him to a rival.

Glad we still our youth!

I'm speechless, I pray Lin turns out to be the real deal and Shump becomes Sprewell 2.0. Knicks used for the millionth time, why did he waste there time if he wanted to be a Lakers smdh. How in the hell did the Lakers pull thid off if theyre play roll is 80 million and they have no cap space?????

Knicksfan wrote:Just curious but how are some so in love with the underachieving and fragile team we had last season? Its like some of you don't want the Knicks to improve but simply keep the same core. While I wasn't thrilled of parting with Shump, I could see the value of having Nash's amazing playmaking skills on a team that more than anything needed direction and stability. How many times we asked for improvement at pg? Who would've been a great fit to mentor Lin?

But no, we don't want Nash, no Kidd, no Felton. WTF do we want them? The same fragile underachieving team we had last season? At this point not even Lin is a certainty for us.

I'm glad we keep Shump and hope he develops, but some here think he is the second coming of MJ and that is disturbing. Make no mistake that landing Nash would've really placed us in the tittle discussion, even if general belief was we would've given up the most points in the NBA.

But yeah, we dodged another bullet, right? Yeah, we are back in the safe zone called mediocrity.

How will we improve this offseason? Have no idea but its looking less likely we will while everybody else gets stronger.

+1

JamesKPolk @ 7/5/2012 3:12 AM
How are you giving +1 yet you think the team is great and a title contender? The guy said the team is fragile and not good enough as currently constructed. Other teams are getting better and we're standing around being used and laughed at. It's obvious free agents don't think we are championship contenders and would rather sign elsewhere. But I have to hear endless praise on this forum for individuals who have proven nothing at all. One playoff win in 2 years from the duo of Amare and Carmelo. Can't wait for playoff win #2 in 2013 and #3 in 2014.

When did I ever say this team is a title contender. It is not.

JamesKPolk @ 7/5/2012 3:19 AM
And never will be with the contract situation the way it is.
Markji @ 7/5/2012 5:57 AM
With Nash we could have been a title contender. Some of you underestimate what effect Nash would have running our offense - his passing; shooting (one of the best in the league); and leadership. Lakers gave up 2 first round picks and 2 second round picks to get Nash. They obviously think that Nash will help them get a title. The Lakers package was better than ours also.
loweyecue @ 7/5/2012 6:00 AM
In the end Nash chose a team that tries to play an offensive system and Melo supposedly tweeted he didn't want to play with a ball stopper!! Who would have thought?

But those that are living in their own delusion will regurgitate something about draft picks.

Markji @ 7/5/2012 6:19 AM
Loweye - I guess you're happy that we didn't get Nash. The expansion of happiness is the purpose of Life, so congrats.
I would have loved to get Nash, but I never really expected it. So I'm not unhappy or surprised.

Regurgitating draft picks?? Don't understand your comment? I was saying the Lakers gave up their future for the present - to try to win another title.Their mgmt obviously places a higher value on Steve Nash than you do.

Now we are in the same funk as before. We still need another PG (back-up to Lin) and a starting SG (Fields is gone; Shumps is injured and I don't expect him back at all next year ; Toney Douglas has been injured and shot 23% from 3 pt last year.) Oh, and Lin was injured and had knee surgery at the end of the year. I believe he will be all right and at the same level of play as last year, but we don't know for sure.

Or did he simply prefer a team with a shot at winning the title?

If that's the case why did he go to the Lakers? That's a team that had no major injuries and no internal drama during the season and they got smacked 4-1 in the playoffs by OKC. Their big problem last year was that they had three great players surrounded by garbage; now they have four great players surrounded by garbage.

You're over-analyzing one five game sample. Replacing a below average PG with a hall-of-fame level PG is enough to turn a .650 team into a contender.

Clearly, you've never read Dave Berri's book. In it, he proves that teams can't win a championship if their best players are over 30. That's why with Melo, 28, Tyson, 29, and Amare, 29, we only have a two year window. The Lakers have Kobe, 34, Gasol, 32, and Nash 38 so they obviously can't win a championship next year.

I just find it funny that you, and several others, keep saying that we have only a two year window based on the ages of Melo, Amare, and Tyson. But now, a much older Lakers team trades for 38 year old Nash and they're title contenders.

Exactly brilliant point. Ahhh the mystical fan/media created "3yr window" dont just look at lakers. Look at Boston & SA. Now Bonn is gonna say Melo is fat

Except the lakers have Kobe, gasol & bynum or howard in place. We have a broken down amare and have to get past miami, boston & chicago.

And for us still being in a funk there are guys out there like felton, camby & a boatload of sgs.

Don't confuse me with others. I have not said we have a two year window. With our current roster, I think it is unlikely that we have an open window at all.
Regarding your more general point about age, players peak in their mid 20s statistically and decline very sharply once they hit 30. But there are rare cases of players aging well and in their 30s, still being about 90% of what they were in their 20s. The Celtics' and Lakers' stars are examples of these rare instances. When you have an 8 or 10 year vet in his late 20s, it is a bad gamble to predict that he will be one of those rare cases in his 30s. Obviously like most bad gambles, there is the possibility it will work out positively though.

I pick on Melo and Amare because they need to be held to the standards of NBA stars. For someone who wants to be considered a superstar, Melo's conditioning as a Knick has sucked. He probably had a higher % body fat than at least 95% of the players making 8 digit salaries. For just an ordinary American, his conditioning is excellent obviously. He's clearly not a fat adult American but he's a fat NBA player.

Didn't Melo just lose 12 pounds though, and is training for the London Olympics as we speak?

That doesn't excuse the last two years. And I'll believe it when I see it anyway. 90% of the time players talk about losing weight, it's bogus.
