Exactly, we had $100M payrolls and were winning 30 games a year. All of a sudden, now that we have our best team in a decade we're going to start caring about the luxury tax? Please.

The article stats we could have signed him for 23mil but really Lin gets new representation and you have to figure he tests the waters.

Grunwald and the Knicks could have said "take it or leave it" but really are forced to be appear generous and let him find his value.

What is not being said is the reality that Tyson or Melo could be traded at some point as a salary dump.

All teams will have to watch the cap in two years and thats when these back ended contracts can come back to bite hard.

Im not worried about dolan paying taxes. Thats his phuching problem.

And if the litte douch screws it up we always have plan "B".

Thats "B" as in "Brooklyn"!

I really hope they do trade Melo although I'm sure they won't. He's not worth even close to the 20 to 25 mil we have to pay him over the next 3 years. You can get 3 to 4 very nice players at the Lin-Terry level for that price.

My point was not to bash Melo or promote his trade but address the problem of a tax figure at 35mil for adding Lins back end contract.

How and what the knicks look like in two years is near impossible to determine. Now like then we will need some sort of marquee name to fill up the arena. Melo's star might be fading or perhaps his last year can be traded.

Not seeing how "expirings" really benefit like the used to back in the day. A team on the brink of winning it all and just one piece away might have the room for Melo and give a nice package to get him.

If Lin is the real deal and we are in some kind of decline Lin could be traded and return assets that are more cap friendly to aid in some sort of rebuild.

Lin would be in his prime. Imagine, trading a player in his prime to extract max value IN RETURN?

Why is Houston after Lin they have Lowery and Dragic available to them. Seems to me the Rockets got real use to the influx of cash from China due to Yao Ming. They see Lin as a means to get that back.

Thought Dragic got 4 yrs, $34 mill from Suns?

He's a restricted free agent so Houston can match. I'm an idiot, Dragic is unrestricted.

Amazing how they cite Morey having an MBA, like he structured some clever deal. He gave a fringe big man 15MM a year to leave the Bull's now that's just crafty!!

However, this is such a fucking joke. Lin is going to be making 1MM less than Rondo in years 3/4 of his deal. The kid had one great month. It would be interesting to see how many guys have duplicated something similiar. Flip Murray averaged 20pts a game for the first couple of months of the season one year and other guys came out scorching hot for small samples. It's just amazing that there was just a lockout and guys like fields and lin are being paid Allstar or near allstar money late in their deals.

Let's remember Felton's stats with Denver, Portland and Charlotte. And then, put into context Lin's numbers under Mike D'antoni.

Yes he did sign with the Suns but why would they let him walk. They could have easily given him a deal.

Crap, you're right. I don't know why I thought he was restricted.

It really is amazing. Everytime someone writes an article about Morey they talk about him like he's some sort of genius but I can't figure out what exactly he's done to help that team get closer to a championship. His first two years there were the only year they made the playoffs while they've missed the playoffs each of the last three seasons. It's absolutely ridiculous.

I believe only Kobe sold more jersies than Lin? Having him here from a marketing standpoint will offset the luxury costs.

The Knick brand will thrive if successfull with Lin as the floor general. No brainer this gets matched

Why anybody can even think that luxury costs are of any considerations by Jimmy?
He used to pay double salary cap for bunch of junkies.
He will not even shizze on extra 30 or even 50 mils of operational expenses.
Team is profitable even when it is losing.
With Melo and Lin fan base at the Garden and all over the world MSG will set a record profits regardless of how the team will perform.
Dolan will mutch ANY offer for Lin. Evan max contract if this will be the case.

ChuckBuck @ 7/5/2012 9:46 AM
If Dolan allowed Isiah Thomas to sign Jerome James for $30 million, he'll allow Grunwald to match Lin for $30 million.

No, Derrick Rose sold more than Lin in past year. But Lin's jersey didn't start selling until February so if at this trend, Lin might pass Rose. Everyone else sold less than Lin, including Kobe.

Jmpasq @ 7/5/2012 9:55 AM
Lets be clear about 1 thing though its not Lins contract that is causing the Luxury tax. I keep seeing that written Lin will cost the Knicks 35 million in luxury tax. No its the combined contracts of Melo, Amare ,and Chandler that are causing the tax

He has potential fan base of 2 billion people... at the time when bbal popularity in Asia is on the rise.
This is the Perfect storm. One should be complete retard to pass on this opportutiny even if it will not work out.
The reward is so big any risk will be justified.

Great point I mentioned that in another thread
