Knicks · Grade Grunwald this off-season up to letting Lin go (page 3)

He gets a passing grade for keeping shumpshump alone.

Hah! He offered him in the Nash trade - the knicks fans would have gone linsane!!

However, the lakers, your fathers smart organization, blew us out of the water with their offer of 2 1's and 2 2's.

Is it considered cheating because Dolan made some of the decisions for him?

The Lakers first round draft picks will all be between 27 and 30. They wont amount to much value.

i think glen did a good job. even though we have become a more veteran team we have added a lot of defense which you need to win. Camby is old but his workload wont be like last year. He will provide us with another good defensive center and will help give chandler a rest. Brewer was a good signing since shump will be out a while and when he comes back we have two of the better perimeter defenders. being able to sign jr smith for 2.8 million was a good move even though he is streaky he seems to like playing for woody. novak its good to have back although i would like novak to try and improve his overall game a little. I understand not signing lin because of the poison pill and i do feel felton will be in better shape since he loves playing in new york

First round draft picks in the upper 20's have sold in recent years for $3 Mil. Seems to have quite a lot of value.

That was before the CBA restricted you to $3 million to trade for the entire year. They're not worth that anymore.

This poll should read How do you grade James Dolan this off-season after letting Lin go

I cannot give the man credit for being a pupit of Jimmy.
This is not a difficult task to do just what you directed to do by the Boss.
I cannot blame him also. This how people make money at MSG.

Personally, I think Grunwald has been brilliant. Amnestying Chauncey to get Tyson, signing Gadz to a team option for the next year, signing Jeffries to a team option for the next year, and setting up Jorts and Jordans contracts so that they were so trade able was brilliant. Signing Lin last season when he was waived, and sending Lin and Jordan to the d-l rather than waiving them ( I believe this was the first time the Knicks sent guys down to the d-l to develop). I think Grunwald has demonstrated that he understands that the Knicks are limited in their youth resources, no draft picks, and wanted to develop the young guys he had in Lin and Jordan. I also think that is why he went euro this year in the draft. I think Grunwald relied on his scouts to compensate for a lack of draft picks and salary space and brought in Pablo, Copeland and White. Adding Camby, Kidd, Felton, Thomas, and Brewer with the limited cap space and trade assets that he had was huge in my opinion. I think assuming that the Lin situation was a dolan emotional reaction and that Grunwald is a puppet is a mistake. I suggest if you feel this way that you really spend some time reading all of Larry Coon's articles and information about the new cba.
CrushAlot @ 8/16/2012 2:19 AM
Also, at the time I thought resigning Toney wasn't smart. Now I think he did it to have a cap piece for a trade.

Without looking at salary - we could have easily traded him to Orlando (trying to keep Howard), Dallas (restocking with Dirk), or Miami.

You can not defend any grade but F.

You might be right, but there is a possibility that even with Lin playing great, not many teams trade for him with that poisson pill. Whit the team we have, Lin was bound for a reduction in his numbers and who knows if the comments on players about his contract would've represented a future problem in the locker room that would've also affected him. Yes, these are suppositions, but have as much value as yours.

Again, I would have matched him and see what I could do later, but the Knicks considered that and still made this decision. Do they know something we don't? We'll see but I don't think it is necessaryly as easy as you mention it.

this is from my response to the Berger article thread about fans seeing this B&W.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think this is clearly black and white,

Simple - the Knicks match the contract.

If there is a personality issue, then the Knicks trade him January of 2013. Crap, you could keep him on ice the whole friggin time. You get back at least and ending contract and draft picks. Dallas, Orlando, Miami, Toronto- plenty of teams you could easily move him to.

If there is no personality issue, and they keep him, but is a bust, then they waive him and spread the $14M cap hit over three years. Dolan has blown bigger money on worst things.

If there is no personality issue, and the keep him, and his play is Linsane, guess what- he is worth every cent you pay in the luxury tax, and maybe you find a taker for one of the other big three contracts we have before the tax hit.

How the heck is that not clear, rational thinking?

That is perfectly clear. If you were the owner of the team, things would be great. You've got a clear mind but a minimal bank acct.

Grunwald did a great job. That's the title of the thread. Your "F" grade should go to Dolan for not matching Houston's offer.

If one huge blunder happens, it's more than fair to give an F, however I gave a D. I think we for sure got some help, but outside of Felton they are 35, 38 and 39 years old. Talk about win now mode. If you are really in win now mode how do you let a your 2nd or 3rd scoring threat walk for worries about the 3rd year of the contract. I'm more worried about the 2nd and 3rd years of the Grandpa duo than I am a 26 or 27 year old cat 3 years from now. I think we would have been much much better off signing Lin and then signing min guys and not retaining Novak (if money was really an object). For years we never paid attention to money, with terrible contracts, then the best PG we have seen in years is just let to walk. That is an F,... I mean D.

Lin was personal, and what goes around comes around Mr. Dolan.

They got tougher. They got incredible value for their dollar. Those people who put down Fs need to sell their Lin jerseys on eBay. It's clouding their judgement.

+1

I'd give Grunwald an A+ - absolutely outstanding considering we had no cap room and very little assets to use to upgrade the team. And Grunwald acted quickly - when one player was lost, he immediately jumped on plan/player B. Specifically got Kidd when Nash fell thru and then got Felton and Kurt T when Lin fell thru. Got Camby. Got Ronnie Brewer. Re-signed JR and Novak. 3 top players from the EuroLeague. So many posters had lamented that we had no way to fill out the roster with good players. Grunwald did it.

Right now we have an excellent team. No weak spots. All 12 men that suit up can play good, tough Bball.

Right On!
A- for keeping the core players intact and trading bench players that were not going to help us to get far in the playoffs. Adding Felton, Camby, Kidd and others have improved the team tremendously. People say Kidd is old but think about what he can do in the locker room, on the bench & in the final minutes of the game and how smart he is on the court. Where were the Knicks supposed to get a younger version of Camby for that price and for what we gave up to? I just love all the moves that Grunwald has made so far.
The guy is shrewd and astute. He has done everything that I thought a good GM should do.
This is a no brainer.

If we compare the moves that Grunwald made and the one that Walsh made, Grunwald wins hands down.

If Dolan gives Grunwald complete control of the roster for the long-term, that would be the best thing that could happen to us Knicks fans.

Agreed. Not gonna happen when it comes to the big moves like the Melo trade or the Lin fiasco. But hopefully Dolan pulls a Steinbrenner and decides to take a back seat.

The Lin move was not on Grunwald and probably all Dolan.

I think this guy has done an incredible job. As I've said, the only dangerous but understandable move was Amnestying CB and not saving it for Amare as insurance. I know Tyson came out of it but if Amare does not play > 50% of the games for the rest of his contract then it was not worth it.

We'd need Dolan to get suspended and see how much better we are without him if he's going to pull a Steinbrenner.

Dolan gives long term control to anyone it would be impactful over time. Grunny is a good man. Had him hiding in the closet in a hotel room. Dolan ruins men.

Part of Donnies job was to tear it down. The rebuild was very early in its stage when Dolan cashed it in.

It is what it is. Walsh was gone by the time Amnesty was available. It was a good move but few teams have the ability to pay a guy 14mm and sign another one in his place. Basically Tysons first year cost the team $28,000,000!!!!!

When I think of that I think DOlan got petty and took Lin's Houstan contract personal! If so, that sucks!
