Knicks · Testing Melo love (page 2)

No sh@t. I never would have known.

Nalod wrote:Maybe sometime you can come over and we can pray over it together during a knick-Nugget game?

See Fishmike and Nalod secretly drinking a chicken blood toast that Gallo dunks over Melo and kicks his nose up into his smiling cranium during the process. While they continue chanting "starphucque...starphucque...starphucque..." and sticking pins in their Jimmie D dolls.

I think he's a good guy and my criticisms of his play come from the perspective of wanting him to succeed, not a desire to see him falter.

Yes, your wording is more precise, the Knicks gave up more than they had to in the acquisition. I liked all the guys that were traded for him, but they were not irreplaceable and nowhere near his level (and I doubt the two best combined ever will be). Not a Nets fan though, so I'm glad he didn't end up there.

fishmike wrote:I was shocked Melo was picked after Darko. What Melo did in his one year at Syracuse was epic. Total dominance.
With the Nuggets he's just another NBA player to me and I was never terribly impressed. He's really good. He's an all star. He's a top 20 player, but he's clearly 2nd tier to me.

As for his time on the Knicks... well, Im waiting to be won over (also defined as a hater). As a Knick fan he's been shoved down our throats as the new face of the franchise. I believe since Ewing left he's the 3rd guy. The first was Allan $100mm Houston. Houston was a really good player and nice guy but not close to franchise talent. The next guy was Starbury, who was closer talentwise, but obviously a mental midget, cancerous personality, etc etc

Next up behind franchise player door #3.... Carmelo Anthony.

The good:
Can dominate games.
Can create his own shot.
Excellent crunch time player.
Can play 2-3 positions and creates mismatches at each one.
One of the tougher guards in the league.
Wants to be in NY

The bad:
not a leader,
doesnt make players around him better,
one could argue he makes players worse,
difficult skill set to team other great/good players with.
Immature, and has been same player for 10 years in the league.
Is he coachable?
Hasnt made the Knicks better win the W/L column.
Too expensive.

Melo doesnt get a ton of hate around here. The hate is portrayed by the folks who have accepted him exactly has Dolan as sold him to us (fans), that Melo is Knick savior, bringer of future titles, face of the franchise and NYC "im coming home" golden boy (wasnt Marbs????). The simple fact is you cant be honest about what Melo has accomplished here without being attacked.

Melo didnt play hard for MDA. Spin: Your an MDA lover, or Amare doesnt play hard on defense so he quit to and you just hate Melo, etc etc
Melo has the worst playoff record of any NBA player with 50 playoff games: Spin: Poor teams, not his fault, he's just as good as Kobe or Wade and would have titles if on one of those teams
Melo has had ZERO impact on the W/L totals since being here: Spin: take your pick of the soup of the day
Melo was out of shape: Spin: lets ignore the direct quotes from the coaching staff and make Melo is fat jokes until its obvious anyone acknowledging that our $20mm a year doesnt take conditioning seriously is just another hater hating.

We could do this all day, but there are really two groups on this board.
Group A: Melo is a star, would have titles (or a playoff win) if not for other circumstances and people who are critical of his accomplishments are haters and have anti-melo agendas
Group B: What has this guy done for us since we traded our roster/future for him?

Group C: Like Melo and hope he's able to become the player he needs to be to get a ring for the Knicks. Again, not an apologist, just a fan. He is only one player so it's not all on him, but he is supposed to be the best player so he needs to be more of a leader. I wonder if the time with Iverson was a bad thing for him. Allen was great, but a lot of your assessment of Melo fits Allen as well...great player that showed he could carry a team, but not so great that he elevated the team.

I want the team to succeed (i.e.: championship) and if that happens with Melo leading them but only scoring 15 ppg, I'd be more than happy with that.

Only in orange and blue. Used to think of him as Denvers version of Iverson early on in his career but hebhas improved. He has improved his fg percentage. Efficiency is Key with Melo. Enjoyed his run at Cuse which is the team I root for in college bball

But its still more productive than circle jerking over Melo in a NYK jersey with the homers while blasting "JD and the Straigh Shot" music with the bass turned up!

I'm a big fan of the Big East, so I liked Melo at the Cuse and rooted for him and the Orange to win the 'Chip in 03. Aside from the Knicks, I tend to keep an eye on some of the former Big East players in the NBA. Cant say I rooted for Melo in Denver but I did keep track of his progress among a few other Big east standouts. He's a Knick now I so I'm a fan and root for him to proceed. Never undertood how fans can root for their favorite team yet despise one of their own players.

It's like Patrick Ewing all over again. Alot of "Knicks fans" would shyt all over Ewing even though without him, the Knicks would be a lottery team. They took for granted all those times missing the playoffs in the 80s, then basically it was ring or bust in the 90s when he got a supporting cast. Nothing spells New York like "What have you done for me lately?"

What exactly does your dream night with fishmike actually produce, again? Comparitively speaking, of course.

It was very hard to root for stephon marbury despite the factvhe was a knick. Its possible

Loved him at 'Cuse. Hated him after the fight. I run hot and cold in regards to him now but find that I am often defending him from some of the ridiculous accusations made by some posters here.

Add the poll votes up and its still 100% are fans or are rooting for him.

I think really its not so much that there any real hate but its the expectations given:

The price paid for him.
Dolans stench is on the trade.
Knick propoganda machine to promote its star.
Some fans unabashed love from moment he took those goofy pictures with Dolan.

Style vs substance and many fans want results.

THe record speaks for itself but this trade will take years to really unfold itself.

Until then, we have the games to watch.

Nalod, why did you not put in an option for - People Who Dislike Him?

I don't really get the sense there are many that do. I was curious because I thought Melo's "don't snitch" and his punk ass punch in the "fight" would have turned some knick fans off.

I don't see much dislike for him. I was not a fan of his but he is a knick and players can grow up and change. As so it could, so could our perceptions.

I have come to like the guy. He is personable and I hope he does well.

I do think he is over rated in some UK circles. Aren't we all?

You definitely have two extremes. However, you would be foolish to assume that there aren't many here that don't like him at all.

I like him because he is now a knick but I was really disappointed that they did not go after Deron. I thought he was a far better fit for this team.

Melo is here now and as you said, he is not a bad guy and is quite personable. He is our best (primary) player at this point and if we are to win anything, it will need to be because of him.

He needs to trust his teammates more though his teammates need to do a better job of earning his trust.

He MUST minimize those "I am on a hot streak" or "I need to get myself going" jumpers and let the game come to him.

I think that his defense is underrated and he actually was the only one who even bothered Lebron.

I blame him in the MDA fight just like I blame Kobe in his fight with PJax. Diva attitude towards a stubborn ass coach with the only difference being that MDA has a bit to go before he reaches Phils class.

I am also not sure who really affects Amare. Is it Melo? Tyson? Or mostly Amare.

It is definitely now in Melo's court with a coach that fits his style and PG's to facilitate the offense.

I think the key to this season is actually Tyson's health.

I love/like Melo
as much as I'm hated here

don't want to be the WWE-'BigShow' of forum boards
but alas so be it!

smackeddog wrote:Never really was a fan of Melo's before we got him. Hated the trade at the time, but we ended up getting Tyson thanks to it, and Felton has returned too, so looks like I was wrong. Last season, he started in pretty good shape and focused more on defense. Then there were injuries and his fued with D'Antoni. He then plumpened up and stopped trying.

I'm glad D'Antoni is gone- since then Melo's won me over a bit. The hate he gets is too much- media and some fans literally blame him for everything and are obsessed that he hated their beloved Jeremy and drove him out of town!

Under Woodson, he's playing defense, and lost weight before the olympics, and he was flat out awesome during that stretch where he pretty much single handedly got us into the playoffs against some tough apponents. For me, that stretch was just as exciting and impressive as the Linsanity run.

Then we had a disasterous playoffs (Tyson ill, Shump tears ACL, BD's knee explodes, Amar'e punches fire extinguisher), and somehow Melo gets blamed for all this- crazy! Why did we end up playing Melo ball in the playoffs? Because there was no one else left! At least he was still playing in the playoffs, and was key to the one win we did get. I really, really don't understand the hate Melo has gotten for the playoffs- to the point his detractors don't even mention that he got us into the playoffs with that run.

Oh but he dogged it before Woody took over. Yes he did, but loads of star players have done that when they didn't like their coach. Heck Ewing did it under Don Nelson.

Just catching up on some forum activity...

This is an excellent post, and sums up how I feel as well. Melo is a terrific all-around player (he can rebound as well as any SF, and can also defend and pass), and seems like a pretty good guy, yet he gets lambasted all the time.

Whatever...I'll continue to enjoy watching him and am happy we have an elite player in his prime.

I picked Cuse to win the NCAA Chip his lone season there... Melo won me a shitload of cash (for a broke college kid, anyway) so I will always be a fan simply for that
