smackdddog - there is no we in "we".

You are either going to love or hate Sheed. In basketball terms, Wallace is a significant skill set upgrade over both Harrellson and Jerome Jordan.

Win or lose, Sheed is cool with me. He is not a difference maker, just a Pine Brother. In case of emergency, break glass.

Listen to you getting pompous! I wasn't exactly being serious- I actually liked Rasheed a lot back in the day. A few years ago I would agree that he's an upgrade on JJ and Jorts, but realistically, factoring in the way he played/dogged it his last season, then adding the time he's been away and aged further, I really don't think it's that simple.

We've taken a big gamble this season- I hope it pays off, but I'm worried knowing our luck recently.

Dude isn't going to get much burn.

Pretty sure Rasheed realizes that.

Martin is right we have a lot of personalities on this new team with Felton, Melo, Amare, Camby, and Thomas.

Yep but at least we won't be scared in big games- they're some tough players who aren't afraid of others.

"Rasheed looked good in workouts and could be a big help." - Tyson Chandler

smackedd - worry only leads to stress. Camp invites are cheap. Making the squad is not guaranteed for Sheed. Let's see what he got.

Another Mike Woodson relationship pays dividends. Frontcourt insurance in the form of a skilled 6'11 veteran is a good thing.

Let the scrimmages begin. Blue team, ball out on the side.

Eugh. Really? The guy last seen lactating breast milk all over the court in Boston 3 years ago is a Knick? I'm usually open minded to moves like this, but this is just mind boggling. Couldn't they get K Mart if they're going after another veteran PF? At least he was in the league last season.
gunsnewing @ 9/28/2012 1:26 PM
They tried to get Kmart he was wouldn't take vet min to play for the Knicks

Read the thread carefully there was an update stating K-Mart didn't want to come here. Doesn't mean we had to sell OLD to go after Sheed

What I find comical about this team is....

- Earl says to the media, when reports surfaced we worked out T-Mac...."Yeah we could use all the help we can get and with a name like his we should bring him aboard"

- Alan Hahn reports Josh Howard is still in the mix and that he and Melo are tight Melo would welcome the signing

- Tyson Chandler says he'd welcome the Sheed signing "he looked good in workout"

Can we say KOOL-AID....ALL DAY EVERYDAY

GustavBahler @ 9/28/2012 6:28 PM
Wow, another vet who wants to play in NY and is actually serious. Rasheed told espn ny that its the Knicks or nobody. These vets arent playing on a full tank but I love how they all want to come here knowing they wont get major minutes.
blkexec @ 9/28/2012 9:56 PM
I'm not understanding the hate for Rasheed.

Maybe because I'm also 39 and still killing almost any gym (when I'm not hurting...lol) Had surgery 6 months ago.

Maybe bacause I'm one of the old school knick fans, that plays and enjoys teams that plays defense. I think it's harder to find players that can actually play defense and have high defensive IQ. Easy to find players that can score.

It doesn't matter how old you are.....I may not have the same first step (but a slower first step, is still faster than the average player), but my shot is still money and improving....And my IQ continues to increase. Plus I'm still a solid lock down defender. Remember, what you are very good at, will usually be the last thing to go. Athleticism is the only exception.

When you have a team full of 38 yr old players, that were defensive specialist in their prime, you have a solid defensive team. Mix in the same shooters surrounding Melo, and you also have a nice balance of offense.

The reason why I like adding Rasheed and any other vets, is for two reasons:

1. Old guys like me get hurt a lot. So when you have more old guys like me, you don't have to run anybody into the ground. Plus you have solid vets as backup to fill in. It's very unlikely for the entire team to all get injured at the same time. But Young or Old, injuries will happen to every team, and the deepest team is usually the last team standing.

2. With Rasheed, we now have three guys that can guard Dwight Howard. Three guys (Camby, Chandler, Rasheed / Kurt) that can guard the rim, and soak up fouls whenever Lebron goes on a dunk fest. We don't have to worry about getting Chandler in foul trouble now, so he can actually give 100% on both ends. Same with the other bigs and smalls since we are do deep at every position.

I remember last year, whenever Chandler got in foul trouble (5 mins in the 1st quarter), he turned into a glass defender and just allowed layups after layups. When he sat down, the defense was even worst.

Thats not the case anymore....The two most important positions on the floor are very deep now (Center and Point Guard)

We have what it takes to win it all.....It's up to the fans and media now. As far as supporting our vets or trashing them. We not winning anything if all we do is trash our own team! Similar to how ESPN and the media treats us.

I know it's hard to understand how you can be 39 and still be an impact player. If I wasn't playing anymore, I wouldn't understand either. But I'm an example of how old guys can still win. We just won a city league, and I put a team of 30 plus yr old guys together and won it all....Experience is key.

@blkexec...u inspire me to keep balling once im 38-39

However...my problem with getting sheed is first of all hes INSANEEE...he makes jr look like a choir boy...not only does he get selfish techs but he quits on the team...2nd last time he played he looked outta shape and didnt LASTLY...here are other younger players out there...like dj wjite or kenyon martin

CrushAlot @ 9/29/2012 12:12 AM
I loved what Buck Williams and Terry Cummings brought to the Knicks in the 90's. I kind of thought Camby and Kurt fit that role. Rasheed certainly doesn't hurt and was a very talented player but I was hoping the Knicks would keep Copeland and maybe Shurna.
VCoug @ 9/29/2012 3:02 AM
Did anyone actually watch Sheed when he was on Boston? He was terrible and was out of shape the entire season. There were games where he wouldn't go inside the 3-point line and people are talking about him guarding Dwight and Lebron?! You think that, somehow, sitting at home on his couch for the last two years means he's better at 38 than he was at 36? A lot of Knick fans are going to be in for a rude awakening this season. Between Sheed, Kidd, and Felton I fear for the mental health of Knick fans everywhere.

What are you going on about? Sheed can indeed be "better" now than when he played his last year, if he gets into better shape and has a better mental attitude. A lot of longtime veteran players just get burnt out and lose the desire to put in the hard work. It's really all mental. Anyone can get into shape at any age if they want to. Dick Bavetta is 72 and can still run back and forth up the court. As a big, Sheed doesn't have to be the fastest up court. If Rasheed doesn't have any serious joint issues then it's really about getting in shape. Not playing actually probably allowed his body to repair itself over that time. Also we're not talking about being in shape like Tyson. He just needs to be able to get up and down for a few solid minutes at a time, as a back up player.

What is your point with Kidd and Felton? Again if they want to get in top shape they'll be just fine. We don't need either Kidd or Felton to be DRose out there. It's a skill position after all. I don't get your point at all. Kidd actually has adapted his game to his physical level at this age and is still effective.

misterearl @ 9/29/2012 6:03 AM
VCoug - have you considered there could be other circumstances about Rasheed's tour in Boston that would qualify as valid distractions?

"There’s a notion Wallace retired after the 2009-10 season because he no longer had the dedication to get in NBA shape and finished the Celtics year in poor condition. However, his mother — now in good health — was ill at the time of Wallace’s retirement, and that could have been a factor in his decision."
- Marc Berman

From 100 Reasons we Love Rasheed Wallace

96. He loves his mother.

97. All-time leader in field goal percentage at Carolina.

98. At Duke game in Chapel Hill during his first NBA season, as freshman Vince Carter, struggling to get playing time, was just trying to concentrate on the game as he walked to the scorer's table, Rasheed yelled to him, "VINCE! VINCE! I know you hear me! You better look over here or I'm gonna slap you upside the head!"

99. Stood with Jerry and Jeff sans costume in the center of Franklin Street during their first Halloween celebration and looked down on all his other "colleagues" as if they were morons. (A student proceeded to run up to him drunk saying, "Man you look like Rasheed Wallace...good costume.")

100. "We had some phantom technical fouls called when we had Rasheed. I know that. He'd just scream, he was so happy with a dunk and the next thing you know it's a technical foul. If I ever dunked, I would have screamed. If I'd go up and sky and dunk one, I'd scream too." - College basketball's all-time winningest coach Dean E. Smith

misterearl @ 9/29/2012 6:13 AM
blkexec knows what time it is

Yeah, They Said It ("Ball Don't Lie" and other nuggets)

"Every time he took a shot he said `Don't worry young fella, I get paid for this. I get paid for doing this to you." - Kwame Brown

During a practice, coach Maurice Cheeks was talking with reporters when Wallace strolled past and had this exchange with Cheeks while continuing to walk toward the locker room:
Wallace: "Say something!"
Cheeks: "They're trying to get you to say something."
Wallace: "They already know what I'm going to say. It's already etched in their reporters' manual."
Cheeks: "What? 'Just ballin?' "
Wallace: "No... Good game. Both teams played hard."

Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, Blazers at Wizards. Rasheed was matched up against Juwan Howard. Rasheed had a fould called against him which sent Howard to the line. Surprisingly, Ra disagreed with the call. After Juwan missed the first free throw, Rasheed started clapping and yelling, "THAT BALL AIN'T GONNA LIE, THAT BALL AIN'T GONNA LIE!"

"Can you get a good cheesesteak in Portland?"

Ejected from playoff game after receiving one technical while on the bench and another without saying anything.

Owns the NBA record for most technical fouls in a season.

"Rasheed was a joy to coach, and I was impressed by his knowledge of the game. If anything, he could be too unselfish." - Dean Smith

"Wallace is a riddle wrapped in a mystery, wrapped in a headband." - L. Jon Wertheim, Sports Illustrated

Question to Damon Stoudamire: "Who`s the most fun guy to hang around with on the Blazers?"
DS: "Probably Rasheed Wallace. That's who I'm with most of the time. Me, him, Bonzi Wells. We hang out. But Rasheed is a character - he keeps the atmosphere really loose in tense situations. He always has something to say."

Wallace wrote J.M.J. in silver on his black Nikes in tribute to rapper Jam Master Jay, of Run-DMC.

"...In college it was win, win, win. I don't like losing. I've never had to deal with losing. When I'm out there on the floor, I might yell or do this or that. I'm trying to get the win. My whole bottom line is getting that 'W.' I might be more vocal or more fierce than the next player, and I get labeled a knucklehead. That comes from people who don't know me, who just see me one night out of 365 days."

New York media? Are you kidding me? Rasheed is a bigger quote machine than Yogi Berra.

The best part? The fans seated at courtside at The Garden will bait Wallace (and he will talk back) into performing at a high level because above everything, Rasheed Wallace IS a performer. He loves the attention. He will do anything to win. Mike Woodson will manage the intensity.

What's Not To Like?

+1

Im ten years older and playing better than I ever have, but I have lost a step which used to be a big part of my game. Just tore my rotator cuff and will probably need surgery but Im putting it off until the spring so I can play in a rec league. Recovery is going to take a long time. Ill try to make the annual UK bball meetup before then.

I don't get obsession with age either. It looks like the Knicks are stockpiling vets so they can keep putting fresh bodies out there and I believe it will foster some healthy competition between the vets. They're going into this knowing they wont get major minutes so I dont see any problems in the locker room over it.

knicks1248 @ 9/29/2012 9:41 AM
If it don't work cut him, no sweat. There's not a bunch of talent standing outside the garden for tryouts,,

Amare said this guy has been lights out from downtown during workouts, tyson, kidd are a few players who have all had positive things to say, so I'm a little encourage. The age thing, the techs (thats 3 guys who love getting techs Amare, Tyson, Sheed) are my only concern..

AnubisADL @ 9/29/2012 9:44 AM
Woodson isnt going 12 deep every night. Alot of guys will be collecting splinters most games.

Sheed will be good in spot minutes in certain games.

VCoug @ 9/29/2012 10:47 AM
You guys are delusional. I loved watching Sheed in his prime but he's clearly a player who only tries when he's invested in the team; something he wasn't his last couple of years in Detroit and his season in Boston both of which were better than we are now. But he's going to come in here, two years removed from playing organized basketball, and he's going to be in better shape than at any point over the last 5 or so years of his career and he's going to be invested in a team that's probably going to win around 50 games and lose in the 2nd round?

Based on the entire rest of his career we can expect him to come into camp out of shape and, since he's now 38 years old, he'll stay out of shape the entire season. And then, because he's never happy on any team and even more so on a team that's only above average, he'll pout and mope and complain and not try at all just like he did on a Boston team that went to the Finals and a Pistons team that won 59 games two years before.

My point about Felton is that some people are expecting a guy who's been in the league for a while now to be a different and better player this year than he has the entire rest of his career. Kind of like they expect Wallace to be a different player than he's been his entire career. My point about Kidd is that some people a 39 year old player who was terrible last year to find the fountain of youth here and become an effective player again. Kind of like they expect Wallace to regain his youth even though he was awful the last time he played 2 years ago.
