Knicks have like 20 guys in training camp....
Sheed is looked at as a lock but he's not in shape yet.
They have that pg Oscar somebody i forgot his name. He's likely out.
Chris smith will probably be resigned to Erie. Looks like Copeland might get reassigned too.
Surna i think might have a legit shot at making the team. I don't have access like that but the dude is a nice player.
The Thompson kid also has a great shot too.
There's also an internet rumor that Josh Howard might be linked to the knicks.
So who gets cut???
James White has a fully guaranteed deal but if the knicks feel someone is better, he's gone too. He's in a one year deal.
Thoughts???
1) Carmelo Anthony F 6-8
2) Amar'e Stoudemire F-C 6-11
3) Tyson Chandler C 7-1
4) J.R. Smith G 6-6
5) Raymond Felton G 6-1
6) Jason Kidd G 6-4
7) Marcus Camby C 6-11
8) Iman Shumpert G 6-5
9) Steve Novak F 6-10
10)Ronnie Brewer G 6-7
11) Pablo Prigioni G 6-3
12) Kurt Thomas F 6-9
13) James White G-F 6-7
14) Rasheed Wallace F-C 6-11
Basically, its which of the one (or two is Sheed can't get conditioned) below make it. I'd guess Copeland or Thompson make it. But, all of that is out the window if Josh Howard accepts a minimum contract.
Chris Copeland F 6-8
Oscar Bellfield G 6-2
John Shurna F 6-9
Henry Sims C 6-10
Chris Smith G 6-2
Mychel Thompson F 6-6
Don't the guys that get reassigned to Erie still count against our 15 limit?
I don't believe Sheed is a lock. He hasn't played pro ball in a while. He could easily decide he's not physically up to it or suffer some injury/set back and bow out.

The Knicks can assign up to three 1st or 2nd year players that are on their 15 man roster to the NBDL. That is, 1st or second year players with NBA contracts can be assigned to the NBDL to play. But this is not what is being referenced.
The reference to Chris Smith and Copeland is that the Erie Bayhawks would sign them outright to a contract (i.e. they would not be on the Knicks roster). This is not an NBA contract. This would mean that the Knicks would have no preferential rights to those players, but they would be developing on a team owned by the Knicks. If any other team came along and offered them an NBA contract, they could sign with the NBA team.

Absolutely agreed... that said, I think its his job to lose.

Thanks Ewing. I'm referring to the statement below:

In light of your clarification, I'm not sure what "reassigned" means in that context.

In that sense you are right. They cannot have an NBA contract and be assigned or "re-assigned" to the NBDL without counting against the 15 man roster.
They can sign directly with the Erie Bayhawks, but the Knicks would have no preferential rights to them, except that they are controlled by the Knicks management who will have more control over their development.

unless I'm mistaken, than can IF the contract is non-guaranteed. Take Smith for instance: you terminate his non-guaranteed contract and then, sign him to a NBDL pact. I don't think White is an option for that.
with Shump on IR can you carry an extra guy? I'd go Copeland and Surna
I like Shurna, shot put shot or not. The guy can stroke it and seems to be a gym rat.

They can terminate the non-guaranteed contract and have the Erie Bayhawks sign them. But that player would have no official relationship with the Knicks and would not be on the Knicks roster. If the Celtics then offered that player (Chris Smith, for example) an NBA contract, the Celtics could do so without any compensation to the Knicks.
The only way I know of to maintain rights to a player without them being on the active roster is to draft the player and then have them play overseas (like Jerome Jordan in Turkey).
gunsnewing wrote:with Shump on IR can you carry an extra guy? I'd go Copeland and Surna
Not more than 15. Not sure if it is 12 or 13 active players now. There were news reports of it becoming 13 active and 2 IR (used to be 12 active and 3 IR).

you sir are correct, that if we go that route (cut and then sign them to NBDL) we lose the rights and they can be signed by anyone.
Its still a viable option imo. Not like these were guys that went very high in the draft. Especially guys like CSmith who don't provide anything that can't be duplicated (I haven't seen him do anything but brick shots) by many other guys that can be picked up.

Exactly. I think all of this discussion was whether it cost us a roster spot or not.
I was hoping for two of these three guys to make it Thompson, Shurna and Copeland. White was pretty disappointing in the summer league but may have the inside track because of his deal and Shump's injury. Losing one, two or all three of the young guys I mentioned is the downfall of the Sheed signing.
Knicks are trying to win now. Copeland is going to get that last spot.
Its annoying to see so many posts dedicated to one word that someone used.
Its to my understanding that a player signed to a partially guaranteed contract can be moved to the d league affiliate without holding a roster spot on the main team.
Anyway, Sheed holds the 14th spot if he makes the team. Leaving just one spot available.
After reading Novak gush about surna, i think he gets #15.
Imho Kurt Thomas or James White are the two very minimum with guaranteed money that could be let go to make room for a free agent our that Thompson kid.

I read this some whwere also but I am not sure if it is accurate. If it is it would be great for the Knicks.
