Knicks · Still no Lebron/Durant/Rudy Gay stoppers (page 1)

RonRon @ 10/15/2012 3:35 PM
And the Dirks/Kevin Love/ Chris Bosh when he spreads the floor...

Matt Barnes looks really good, could have used a player like him on our roster.
I thought he was done last year but I think he suffered from the lack of ball movement and half court offense with KOBE.
We need players with good size and length to go with versatility/DEF/Ability to spread the floor

if we could swing a deal for James Johnson or Brandon Rush and go after players like Stephen Jackson/Dunleavey during the off season with the Mini MLE.

I still like Brandon Rush a lot, would love to swing a deal for him.
Malcom Thomas as a 1 year stoppage?
He looked great in the summer league for the Bulls with double double with points and rebounds.

Brewer is probably our best defender to put a on Lebron but I see him better utilized defending Wade because JR Smith and even Iman this year are just too small.
It was evident last year JR Smith just isn't big/strong enough to defend Wade during the play offs.
JR Smith looks much improved but with Iman, Felton, Kidd, I think we need a player with better size and length that could play the SF better and even some PF.

With all the experience Kidd/Pablo, it would make sense to have a PG that can develop and absorb their knowledge.
At least we have Iman, that can improve his ball handling and skills at setting up/facilitating the team and at least be a better SG with better PG skills.
Eric Blesoe looks very impressive so far, he has great athleticism, to go with his speed, quickness, and defensive intensity, and has improved much with practice Cp3/Billups, it is showing.
Bledsoe would be sick with Iman together, especially with Felton/Kidd.

However with Camby/Tyson/Wallace/Kurt, all players are closer to the CENTER position than a PF at their ages and I do not know if they can play many minutes together on the court at PF/C at their age and lack of speed.

With our injuries last game

Iman
JR Smith
Brewer
Amare
Camby

that is a pretty sick lineup themselves.

We have been playing with 4 shooters and great ball movement so far, it will be interesting to see how Amare works without the spacing 4 shooters and a lane to penetrate with.
How Woody and Hakeems coaching would be utilized in the post and if they can execute together.

A genuine question: which players in the league are best at defending Lebron? I remember the Kobe stoppers, but I'm not aware of any Lebron stoppers, off the top of my head?
DurzoBlint @ 10/15/2012 3:44 PM
Wasn't Rubin Patterson the fool that said he could stop Kobe. That ended well
RonRon @ 10/15/2012 3:46 PM
Not many players have the size/strength/speed that Lebron has, but to a lesser extent, we do not have anyone to defend Rudy Gay/Durant.

You need players with good size/length/athleticism/speed.
We do not have any player that can match up with them.

Brewer is our current best defender but he is too small to for Lebron and Durant while, we need him to defend Wade and Harden.
James White looks to be like a waste of a roster spot, he still looks out of shape to me and does not possess the athleticism his youtube videos have shown.
While we are using so many roster spots at the C position that are questionable to play the PF efficiently with their age, and Wallace looking to regain NBA shape.

We do not have many roster spots left for this season, I think we need multiple defenders/bodies.
Pietrus is one of the better 9th man available in FA for this year.
He should be the 3rd or 2nd at best used to defend those All Stars.

Anji @ 10/15/2012 3:47 PM
Dafaq is this shit????

We talking this season not next offseason.

Knicks ain't even finish their breakfast!!!

ChuckBuck @ 10/15/2012 3:48 PM
Is there such a thing as a Lebron stopper?

Durant, easy. Russell Westbrook. Rudy Gay also easy, Z-bo. Those 2 guys when on will stop those 2 all day!

yellowboy90 @ 10/15/2012 3:53 PM
How big do you have to be to guard Wade 6'8 240 lbs because Shump is 6'5 220+lbs and JR is 6'6 220+lbs.
RonRon @ 10/15/2012 3:55 PM
I am just saying, its a concern and position that we have still not addressed for this season and we have talks about ECF

While many teams like Pacers/Clippers have multiple defenders at those positions

Pacers

Paul George
Gereld Green
Sam Young

Granger
Tyler Hansborough

Clippers

Caron Butler
Matt Barnes
Odom
Grant Hill
Eric Bledsoe

Other teams that has players like

Deng/Gibson
Gereld Wallace/Keith Bogans
Ak47/Derrick Williams/Chase Budinger
Paul Pierce/Jeff Green
Iggy/Chandler/Brewer/Gallo

I am not saying these players will lock down Lebron/Durant/Gay etc, but they have the size to put a body on these type of players.
Don't tell me Melo is going to defend Lebron because he cannot even defend Rudy Gay, and I do not want him to be our #1 option because it will kill his energy for our offense.

Knicks

Felton/Kidd/Iman

Brewer/JR/Melo

we can go small but Wade/Lebron will eat them up on the post and shoot over them with ease.
JR Smith and Fields both were eaten up by Wade alone last year, who seriously thinks he could defend these athletic forwards with range?

Thompson, Klay's brother, has the most size and doesn't appear to make the roster especially if Copeland/Wallace make it, a reason why White should be cut...

James White was still recovering from his hamstring injury when he played his first preseason game, which is why he looked out of shape and unathletic- wouldn't judge him on what we've seen so far. From what I've read, he supposedly looked really good in practice until he injured himself.

nyk4ever @ 10/15/2012 5:12 PM
woah we got a uconn fan here or something? since when does rudy gay get mentioned with lebron and durant?

Come playoffs time having both brewer and shump healthy is gonna give us a big advanatge

NUPE @ 10/15/2012 7:01 PM
There is no single player that can defend Durant or LeBron 1v1. It requires team defense.
VCoug @ 10/15/2012 8:13 PM
No such thing as a Lebron stopper, it's like asking who's going to stop Jordan, Magic, Bird, etc. Best you can hope to do is shut down the players around him and make him win by himself like in Cleveland.
RonRon @ 10/15/2012 8:16 PM
no one is saying to lock down these all stars, I am saying acquire bodies that will make it tougher for them.

Lebron
Durant

lesser extent of Gay

ALL of these players have been killing us EVERY GAME,since from the Isiah years, once they got in the league.
we cannot allow them to get in rythme easily and catch fire with easy baskets.

Wade/Lebron were toying with us and Chandler was helping last year with JR Smith/Fields on Wade and Melo on Lebron.

All 3 have good range, good/great handle/athleticism, post up game, strength/great ability to finish with contact, and have great length.

My point of putting Rudy Gay in there, is just to point out that we do not have a forward with a good body/length to defend them.

Wade/Lebron are insane athletes, what seperates them, is their ability to penetrate/facilitate/handle the ball/post up/ and shoot over small defenders.

On the Bulls, Brewer was used to defend Wade and Deng/Taj Gibson on Lebron.
Deng's and Taj Gibson's defense >>> than anyone we have on our roster.

Of course, they still had Noah/Osik to help as well.

If Camby was younger, I think there is possiblity that he would be used on Lebron 1v1 using his length/athleticism to disrupt him.
Lebron is so strong, you have to stay low to get position, but then he can rise up and shoot up over the defenders.

Offensively I am not sure if Camby would work with Chandler but would work if Wallace comes back in shape to 10-15minutes a game.
Wallace has the ability to spread the floor and post up and is a decent help defender.
However, at their current age and shape, I am not sure if it would be effective/efficient.

Everyone can say what they want about Gereld Wallace but he has a nice size/frame/athleticism to put a body and math up with Lebron.

If Iman comes back healthy and looks good, I would not be suprised if Grunweld moves JR Smith for a bigger G/F like Brandon Rush.
With Kidd/Iman/Brewer/Felton, defending the PG/SG's, JR Smith becomes expendable
maybe even Kurt Thomas back for Jeffries if Wallace shows effectiveness
if we throw in a future 1st rounder, Edoh/Serephin...

LeBron, Wade and Durant have been destorying the entire league for years now. It is not an issue particular or limited to the Knicks.

The Knicks have good perimeter defenders in Shump and Brewer. Melo's D has improved. Felton is a good defender. Amar'e is a good shot blocker. Tyson and Camby are great defenders. This team is probably better equipped to deal with LeBron / Durant / Wade then most teams in the NBA. And the end of the day there is no stopping LeBron and Durant. You just want to force them into tougher shots, be physical with them and play good and smart team defense.

Anji @ 10/15/2012 10:43 PM
Gerald Wallace
6 ft 7 in (2.01 m)
220 lb (100 kg)

Ronnie Brewer
6 ft 7 in (2.01 m)
227 lb (103 kg)

Why are you worried about trading players before the knicks even play A REAL GAME!!!!!!
WTF???

callmened @ 10/15/2012 10:53 PM
@ronron...i have to agree..u cant stop the greats...i jus hope that our def is good enough to stop the rest of the team
callmened @ 10/15/2012 10:58 PM

It's a concern shared by almost every team in the league. There's no one in the league who can stop Lebron, Durant, and to a much lesser extent, Gay. The onus is on Woodson and the rest of our coaching staff to come up with schemes that will help us slow those players down.

nixluva @ 10/16/2012 2:12 AM
This NY team is one of the best suited to actually defend Lebron and Wade. We don't just have defensive bigs, but Defensive Guards as well. This team is even better than last years Knicks team defensively. This is from a team perspective and an individual perspective. I think this team is built to actually slow down the Heat and make them have to shoot contested jumpers. You can only do that as a team. You have to have a team that can defend the basket and this team is built to be able to make it hard to get to the rim.

Let's be honest the Heat really don't kill you in the half court as much as they do off the fast break. They use their defense and great team speed to kill you off turnovers and missed shots. That's why having a really good post offense hurts them. You don't get a lot of deep rebounds off post offense. They can't get out and run as easily. It's not just your D, but your offense that matters.
