Knicks · To keep Amare fresh (page 1)

They need to limit him to 20 minutes a game for the rest of his contract. Id rather have him be effective and reliable as a part-time player than do what has already been done--run into the ground. I think Amare can take KT's minutes and the rest can be split between Camby Rasheed or KT.

We really have no idea of the condition of Amare's knees. He might be able to play starter's minutes, at least for the playoffs, or he might have only a couple hundred minutes of playing time left in his career.

There is no proof that he will ever play another minute. These injuries are scary.

That's true. I was trying to be slightly optimistic. Unless he's the same player he was for the first 3/4 of a season in NY, I don't think he helps us anyway.

Exactly and I said this word for word in another post (but I said 1/2 season, you say 3/4)

What's the deal with an uninsured contract? Say the worst happens and he's done for (and that's being extreme). He still has to get paid I assume, but does he count against the cap?

I think that they can apply for an exception.

Coon said the Knicks could apply for some cap relief. I am not sure what it is or if they would get it. My guess is if amare's situation doesn't improve he will address it again.

The fact that Amar'es contract is uninsured doesn't really make any difference- if it was insured, all it would mean would be that if he was unable to play again, or suffered a career ending injury, Dolan would save some money as the insurers would pay the rest of his contract (doesn't make any difference cap wise).

The only way it would be a factor is if he was unable to play again, maybe he'd be more tradeable if the contract was insured, as if you took back a similar salary, the team recieving Amar'es would essentially be saving $20mil (count against the cap but the insurer would pay it).

Realistically though, as we saw with Allan Houston, Amar'e would likely keep trying to come back from the injury, so he would likely never be ruled unable to play again.

At least thats my understanding of it- People complaining about Amar'es contract being uninsured, are really overstating it's relevance.

I realize that people are worried about Amar'e health and his ability to gel with the O when he comes back but I think we will see a different Amar'e. He actually started playing D when Woodson took over and even though he hasn't played he is still able to get mental reps of how to help. Hopefully he is spending time with Sheed and I think Sheed could be a great coach teacher for him. Between Kurt, Camby, Sheed, Chandler, and Woodson Amar'e should be a better defensive player. It was not ability holding Amar'e back it was lack of Defensive IQ and being lazy.

I do agree though that he should keep his minutes down until the playoffs.

How can you be so sure he'll be healthy enough to do that?

Being able to use that exception to add another reserve big man and 3/D wing player would be huge. I see Shumpert eventually replacing Brewer in the lineup, if not this year than next year. Eventually we will need another wing who can shoot and defend to replace Kidd. If we can get that this summer, along with another backup big we would be set.

Spring time fresh? Seriously, I believe the team's record will determine how many minutes Stat gets. I doubt Amare is going to pull a Chris Childs and asked to be benched. If the Knicks are playing like contenders if and when he gets back it will be easier to sell Stat on a reduced role for the good of the team.
