"When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." - Ben Franklin, rolling in grave

Most great nations fall from within, I guess the US is heading that way.

No one's forcing you to stay. You can always go to the libertarian paradise of Somalia!

People corrected your statements about the stock market in the other thread. Are you going to reply to them?

When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic. Sell not liberty to purchase power. - Benjamin Franklin

awesome quote!

I think F&A is saying the reason Obama and other Democrats got elected is because herds of Americans are unmotivated takers looking to suck on the government teat of entitlements that they figure Obama will give them. Right?

I think Romney supporters have to stop looking at Obama as if he had Mao's Little Red Book in his back pocket. He's a centrist technocrat who goes hard in the paint in campaigns, posting up as a populist. He's much more Clinton than Castro (remember welfare reform, financial deregulation, and NAFTA?) but the absurd rhetoric on the right would have you think otherwise.

F&A, what was your opinion of the New Deal? Because as a progressive, I actually would love to see a Green New Deal. But I don't see Obama going that far...

You need to talk to some real lefties, so you can get an idea how center Obama actually is.

In most western, industrialized societies, Obama would be considered pretty conservative.

Is it really necessary to place this thread on the main forum where there are already 3 others political threads that could've been consolidated into 1? Use common sense please

But what I don't understand is how do you worry about the peanuts and not worry where the real money is going...People are so worried about the $200.00 people get monthly...No one spent like Reagan and Bush..No President...The money that went to the military industrial complex is just unthinkable...How are we just blind to this...Cheney kept his financial holdings in Haliburton as Vice President of the US...Haliburton got all the military contracts in Iraq worth 100s of billions of dollars...Haliburton got contracts for Katrina as well...The stock did very well as you can imagine...Cha Ching for Cheney...Here we are worried about the guy getting 200.00 per month...

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is how I interpreted this quote.
People will vote for money in their pockets over liberty, freedom and morals

I think he's basically predicting the world will come to an end now that Obama will serve a second term.

I love a good quote as much the next guy but people quoting politicians from 300yrs ago is a little much. Just what the world needs

Yea, it's pretty crazy when you think about the absence of Bush pêre et fils from the GOP conversation and sales pitch. They've been banished from the conversation because they are a liability now, leaving behind Karl Rove to go mental in a Fox News studio on Election Night. GOP reverts to Reagan hero worship because they are running away from their recent history and (then) current reality: a universal healthcare implementing Mormon Gordon Gecko with a Reed Richards haircut who got beat up and peer pressured by his own party to be a policy chameleon.

How about this interpretation:

When people can vote in a socialistic welfare state because it feeds their inner need to have big government hand them everything they feel they have a human right to (including things like internet access), then this republic will cease to exist. Oh yeah, and when Uncle Barry can just print more money to make everything alright, that's the power of appealing to the self-entitlement, victim mindset over liberty and the view of freedom that says 'rights' are things that you ought to do, not ought to get.

Does that make it any clearer to the populist, media-driven leftist neo-Marxist-nirvana mindset?

Franklin was a great harbinger of power to the people, but not at the expense of the concept of "inalienable rights" that he had signed his name to. The French at the time still thought he was the greatest president we ever had.
