Knicks · Does Anyone Appreciate How Well Raymond Felton Is Playing? (page 12)

VCoug @ 12/14/2012 1:35 PM
Who cares how much money he makes? Unless your Ray Felton, Ray Felton's agent, or James Dolan it should make no difference to you what his cap number is. What matters is his play on the floor which isn't good enough considering how often the ball is in his hands and how often he shoots.
earthmansurfer @ 12/14/2012 2:15 PM
gunsnewing - Thx. I don't want to make this into a bashing session, but let's just be honest with what we have, sort of like management has to be when they are improving a team. Ok, we got Felton on a cheap contract but that is ONLY because he was fat, out of shape and had a terrible year. We could just as easily said we gave the guy another chance. But I do see the good he brings, which I bring up some below.

MrKnickshot - I pretty much agree with your post. I just don't like Felton taking too many shots. I wish he could be more of a PG, especially when his shot is off. I also wish he would stop taking those 5 - 10 bad shots a game. That is a big part of the problem I have with him AND it hurts the team more than we think imo. He plays really good, sometimes great, and he must somehow be using that as justification for taking horrendous shots that take the team out of their rhythm. Melo used to do that a lot and now he is doing it much less and involving his teammates more - look at the results. If Felton can play smarter we will be fine. It is a conscious decision to not take bad shots, it's not like it requires a high IQ or great court vision - it is simply will and awareness.

So, instead of accepting Felton for where he is right now, is it so wrong to want to see him get better and grow as a player? This isn't a hate session but many of us are not happy with his game. On a positive note - I LOVE his aggressiveness. That was something I really missed that Lin brought but Felton is keeping that part up and with his build he can handle it.

Woodson said he doesn't take any issue with Raymond Felton's high shooting volume.

"No, not really because he's missing good shots," he said. "I'm not going to take that away from him."

Felton got lit up for 40.

He defense has been lacking severely.

I cant wait for Shumpert to return.

The foundation of the offense of this basketball team is for Felton to be aggressive, get into the lane, take the open shot when given...This creates opportunities for others and it's been successful...He has taken some horrendous shots at bad times...I still want him to be aggressive, get into the land and take those shots when given...We are 18-5 an in a big part due to Felton's overall play...This is what happens to role players...You don't always get consistently good basketball..You hope for more good than bad which is what we get with Raymond...You hope bad shooting games don't take away from the other aspects that contribute to their overall play..See JKidd...Ray has made JKidd better with open looks off his penetration...Ray has made Chandler better with easy baskets and with puts backs of missed penetration...Chandler is now balling confidently...Ray made Brewer's open looks more bearable...In May, Ray will be taking less bad attempts than in November and December...Dude is balling for us, we are 18-5, and the moaning is deafening...Unreal...If role players didn't make inconsistent and bad plays at times, we would have 400 all star caliber players in the league...

You should watch the game before you make guarantees. Also remember that Woodson calls guys out for poor play on defense. He lets his guys play on offense.

misterearl is Felton. No other explanation makes sense.

I look at it like Wallace getting lit up by melo. Wallace is really good and plays all out all the time. Felton is like that but not as smart a player. However Kyrie is a star and was unstoppable tonight. His two biggest threes were when Kidd was guarding him ( watch the game b@tches).

Yeah, but how smart did he look??????

Actually Felton, Kidd, and Smith got lit up by kyrie
NYKMentality @ 12/16/2012 5:41 AM
Raymond Felton with one hell of a game. Irving had a career night against our entire Knicks led defense but Felton himself put up 25 points off 9/20 shooting, 7 assists, 5 boards, 2 blocks along with only 1 turnover. Our coaching staff will be running laps next practice out. Felton also went 3/4 from beyond the arc. Sunk all 4 free throw attempts.

Felton ran our offense without Shumpert (2G), Carmelo (SF) and Stoudemire (PF) tonight. 3 starters. Veteran backups in Rasheed and Camby were also out. But yet, Felton still dropped 25 and 7 with only 1 turnover.

earthmansurfer @ 12/16/2012 5:50 AM
Nice game by Felton. Can't fault anyone's defense on Kyrie, the guy can flat out score. If Felton OR JR have an off game shooting a lot of shots, we can still win - like tonight. But if both are taking lots of shots and not hitting... no no. At least Felton is more consistent than JR, but there will be games when both are off and I hope that is when Woody reels them in a bit.
newyorknewyork @ 12/16/2012 5:56 AM
Felton will take those shots because he has to make the defense respect his ability to score when they go under the PNR.

His TS% must have been great at 45-75-100 7ast-1TO.

With Melo and Amare out somebody has to take the shots and for the most part he takes what the defense gives him based off how they play the PNR.

kyrie hit some tough shots with felton all over him, was Starks a bad defender when MJ would light him up..

Kyrie is alot better then i ever imagine he would be..The dude is ooozing with confidence, he even challenge KOBE for a 50k bet that he could beat him one on one..

you guys are starting to expect the world of felton on a 18-5 team..he's obviously trying to step up in the absence of some of his teammates..Felton is a pass first PG, but without amare and melo is he suppose to make sure Jr gets more shots, or stationary novak..

Had kidd shot better felton would have had 12 assist.

Pass first point guards shoot less than 16 times per game. The only point guards in the league taking more shots than Felton are Jrue Holiday, Russell Westbrook, and Kyrie Irving all of whom shoot a high percentage from the floor.

EDIT: And I for got to mention that he's ranked 13th in FGA/game.

Subtle Moves

knicks1248 wrote:Had kidd shot better felton would have had 12 assists.

Raymond Felton is improving with every game. Forget the shooting stats. Raymond is finding guys in their sweet spot, whether it leads to an assist or not. He brings flow and hustle. There is a reason the Knicks are 18-5 and the defense is able to make other teams worry.

(Uncle Drew has talent and poise on the level of Chris Paul. Nobody stops him from doing what he wants.)

There is an improvement in Felton's game that can be seen in his ability to conform to Carmelo and play without him. The only reason the pick and roll is efective is the threat of Felton's pulling up and taking the jump shot. Without that skill, the defender adapts quickly. No, Felton is far from perfect, but his essential role for THIS team is a large part of its early success.

The fun continues Monday.

I did watch the game, and it never felt that J Kidd was pressing, and I was shocked to see ow many misses he had in the boxscore. However, with Ray it's often the reverse. You can feel him forcing it when the ball is not going down, and you just know how bad a percentage he's having. He needs to stop forcing that Mark Jackson teardrop shot. It ain't working. Back off and keep practicing it.

You nailed it. Difference between forcing shots and shots in the flow of the offense
