Knicks · Does Anyone Appreciate How Well Raymond Felton Is Playing? (page 21)

jazz74 @ 12/28/2012 10:47 AM
yeah we will appreciate him more the next two months.

With no flexibility, no cap space or young players and picks to get a better PG.

Gonna have to ride out the next 3 years with:
Felton
Amare
Melo
Chandler

and hope we beat Miami, OKC, Chicago & Clips etc

Grunwald has been pretty amazing with limited resources. Cope, Prigs and White were great finds with only 1 second round pick. If Sheed comes back and plays like he was it was another great find. The Knicks were able to pick up Lin last year. The Knicks do have their first round pick this year and Shump is coming back. I think once you have the talent you can find the pieces.

Erick Green

Virginia Tech

6'3. 185

But on Saturday, Green added another notch to what is fast becoming a legendary final season in maroon and orange when the Hokies suffered their first loss of the season at West Virginia. And it had nothing to do with the 23-point, 10-assist, 4-rebound, 0-turnover stat line that Green put together in Morgantown, W.Va.

Piece of cake

Knicks have their 2013&2015 1st round picks and can be swapped in 2016, so we are only missing a 1st in the next 4 years.

VCoug wrote: I honestly believe we're not going to miss Felton at all over the next 4-6 weeks. I'm expecting the offense to look much more cohesive going through Melo, Kidd, and JR on nearly every possession.

The difference on offense could be masked by the emergence of Mr Smith in the pick and roll.

Defense is where the wear and tear on Kidd (40 in March) and Priggi Smalls (36) could cause some problems. Not looking forward to Kidd/ Prigioni checking Westbrook, Chris Paul or Rondo.

The March schedule is brutal.

I don't know what you've been watching, but Felton hasn't been good defensively at all this season; I can't think of one game where he's been able to consistently stay in front of his man. Right now, in a bad defensive backcourt, I'd rank him 4th best defensively behind JR, Kidd, and James White.

Exactly Felton gets beat every game. Making Tyson look worse than he really is and always in foul trouble

Kidd would get beat all the time by quicker PGs too but he's been playing SG. PG's constantly beating the knicks falls on Felton. big part of the reason why our D has gone south

MrKnickshot says:

You are nuts! Red Aurbach says that defenders are defenders and that means Sugar Ray Felton can defend. Put him in the backcourt with JR-Yogi-Smith and we have beautiful basketball. If we could only have kept Landry Feilds, it would be as pretty as Priggy Smalls.

Just Win Baby!

Some times guys score. He looked good on Kyrie to me.

Can't be the only night he looked good defensively if he can stay with Irving.

I have no idea what you're seeing in that video. It looks to me like Felton is getting beat every time Irving wants to drive and he gets lost if his man doesn't have the ball. There must be a reason Kidd got switched to him in the 4th quarter.

gunsnewing @ 12/28/2012 1:23 PM
I wouldn't site Irving's 41pt masterpiece in Felton's defense

Come on dude, those were contested shots Kyrie was making all night. there were one back door that he got loose and blow by drive.

Sadly people don't post videos about shots that miss or bad scoring nights.

Both the good and bad thing is that no one can stop Westbrook, Paul, Rondo and other guards of that caliber. Felton is a thick body though, so he doesn't tire defensively.

There will be an adjustment coming up for Prigs. I do hope we don't overuse Kidd as we will need him at the end, when it counts. There will be a big adjustment for the team when Prigs is in there though, the offense is going to not come from him so much. Imagine Felton's 20 shots a game being reduced to 5 - 10 with Prigs. I do think we will play better team ball but we will also have some adjustment problems. But being forced to learn is often the ticket as Prigs wasn't getting many minutes and now he probably will (If coach doesn't play favorites too much.) I think now will be a good time to draw up some plays for Novak to get some shots as well. Will be interesting to see how Chandler and Prigs run the P&R together. Felton had it very good there - perhaps his best quality of running our offense - but since his shot isn't falling the P&R has faded more.

Hopefully things pan out and Felton learns a lot on the sidelines. I like him, but I'm not holding my breath as he has been the type of bull dog player he is since he came into the league.

Irving was hitting everything and to be honest, Felton stayed with him excellently for the most part. There was only 1 time that he actually got by him and Kyrie does that 3-5X a game with anyone.
I was actually surprised Felton was that quick against a speedster like Kyrie. And you have to consider the guy on offense definitely has the advantage.

That may not have been Feltons worst game and KI is a beast. However, Felton has had many defensive stinkers. Way too many.

Imagine how much better the Knicks record would be with Kyrie, Chris or Jeremy. Felton's shot selection as worse than the impulsive Kobe. His poor decision making rivals that of Toney Douglas of 2011. His defense makes a sieve look like a block of concrete.

"Many defensive stinkers?" Really?

How can we manage to be recognized as a much-improved defensive team that protects the ball better than most teams in the NBA?

Why are the Knicks coaches running frequent laps for 12 total turnovers or less?

Who knew the Knicks could go 21-8 playing four on five?

joec32033 @ 12/28/2012 3:32 PM
I love Felton. Chandler and him and Shump are my favorite Knicks. In that order. That being said, bottom line, when Felton presses and tries to play up to his competition, he plays bad. He tried to play up to Deron, Kyrie, and tried to demolish Lin instead of playing his game. When he presses to do well, he plays poorly.

Anyone who recognizes us having a much improve defense over last year is wrong. Last season we were the 5th best defense in the league using basketball-reference.com's metrics; this year we're 16th. Last season we were 11th with 94.7 while playing at the 5th fastest pace in the league at 93.2 possessions; this year we're 12th at 96.7 ppg but at the 12th slowest pace at 91.7 possessions. Last season we 10th in fg%, 43.7%; 23rd in 3fg%, 35.9%; and 13th in eFG%, 48.5%. This year we're 22nd in fg%, 45.5%; 23rd in 3fg%, 36.7%; and 25th in eFG%, 50.4%.

But you don't need stats when your eyes should be telling you the same thing. Tyson isn't even going to be in the conversation for DPOY after winning it a year ago; our backcourt defense has been about as effective as a turnstile at stopping players from driving to the rim; we get murdered every game on backdoor cuts; and, offhand, I can't remember us getting a defensive stop when we need it, unless you want to Telfair stepping out of bounds with one second left in the game the other night.

joec - outstanding observation. Ray also struggles with maintaining positive body language. After missed shots, he allows his frustrations to boil to the surface. Instead of focusing on other aspects of the game he takes the approach of attempting to shoot his way back.

This is where watching Jason Kidd go 2-11 and still impact a game in positive ways will be instructive to Felton. Like Clyde, Kidds expression never changes. The quintessential
professional.

While healing, Felton can experience the peaks and valleys, and follow his running buddies, from a less possessive angle.
