Mike Woodson has done a terrific job with this team. For a guy who was mainly known as a defensive oriented coach, he has surpassed a lot of expectations so far with the offensive philosophy.
This is what happens when defense is your primary focus. It leads to improved offensive efficiency.
It's more like
Acquiring efficient scorers = efficient scoring

But the great Mike D'antoni was a players' coach. The ultimate offensive mind. The mastermind behind SSOL. The man who dubbed Gallinari the best shooter he's ever seen. The man who would blame shooting instead of defense for losses.
Why didn't he have the offensive success that Woodson does?

Actually, career-wise he's had far more success than Woodson has.
because Dantoni and Melo didn't work
gunsnewing wrote:because Dantoni and Melo didn't work
Exactly; he wanted Melo to be a smart shot-taker and passer. Melo doesn't want to do that. So it won't work. We also acquired many very good players this off-season. Very good players under a mediocre offensive coach will do better than poor offensive players and an uncooperative franchise leader under any coach.
gunsnewing wrote:because Dantoni and Melo didn't work
LOL.
And Woodson magically waved a wand and makes it work, right?

Career-wise, he also had a 2 time MVP and a top flight PF at the time in Amar'e.
If you gave Woodson that combo in their prime, you're talking about at least 2 rings, not pathetic Conference Finals appearances.
because the Knicks went in a different direction once they acquired Melo and Tyson. Some coaches adapt. Dantoni chose not to adapt and that is why they parted ways. I never expected Dantoni to adapt. He doesn't stand a chance against other coaches defensively so sticking to his philosophy suits him best. Dantoni needs guys who fit his system to a T because he is not a good communicator and motivator. Basically a very shaky hire for any team unless you have a Steve Nash in his prime
Why slam MDA when you could just praise the good job Woodson has done?
Another woodson praise thread does not have the homer emotion mob flash attention as a MDA thread?
or you just want to bait "the somber six" into the same redundant posts again?
Wait so Steve Nash was an MVP in Dallas before he went to the Suns?
And when your team is constantly taken apart every season by cap clearing trades it's hard to implement your offense.
And Mike Woodsen has an efficient offense because of Raymond Felton and Jason Kidd moving the ball. Add Pablo to the mix as well. He's done a nice job with JR smith, but when Melo wants to get someone fired he gets them fired, gives half ass effort and doesn't get himself in shape. We are also benefitting from off the charts shooting at the moment that's not going to last. We have looked very solid so far, but working your offense through Toney Douglas is something no coach could combat.

It's not that D'antoni chose to not adapt. He tried his ass off for however many years, but he quickly realized he was failing fast. His lack of Steve Nash severely exposed the flaws in his coaching abilities.
However, I agree with you on him being a poor communicator and motivator.

Nalod, I post here to share my wisdom. And it won't always be pretty.
Dantoni will never have a team fit his style to a T like he did in PHX with Nash, Amare, Joe Johnson, Marion and bell. Therefore he will never win a championship because defense, size to an extent and using it to exceed in the half court wins rings. He might win with the Lakers but so would any youth league coach
What wisdom? I can see the games and the results.
Woodson is dong a very good job. MDA does it a different way. I't was not working. SO he left/fired/exiled/deposed/castout/sent home.
I think we got that memo. We also got the one about 18-6. Saw that also.
Im sure your all excited about the rest of the season. I am too. I'll watch about 50-60 games. Tonite I got my circut training then 90 min of tennis time. Get home, crack a beer and have some dinner and DVR thru the game with Wife.
We'll discuss the current season.
Do you know what we won't discuss? MDA. We might talk about the Offensive efficency but thats on Woodson.
But you can talk about woodson, Lin, Gallo and what ever. whats left to discuss?
Exactly Dantoni, Gallo and Lin threads are no longer allowed here
Dantoni does not seem to embrace defense and efficient offense. Rather, Dantoni believes in out-scoring the other team and increasing the number of offensive possessions through taking quick shots. I believe this may be the reason that he does not like to run offense out of the post because it slows the pace of the game.
Just my guess and mostly speculative based on watching his teams play the last few years.
As for the Knicks, I like the way their offense looks right now.

Redundant threads are always welcome on the UK.
Clyde might say "abundant and redundant"............
I took the bait. I try not to anymore. IM done with the Melo>Gallo thing, the MDA<Woodson thing, anything to do with Lin unless its about his last game.
Lots of current basketball to watch without having to rehash the same topic over and over.
Tonite its about Avery vs. woodson, BroPez vs. FluTube Tyson, Wallace vs. YouTube Melo, Johnson Vs. Brewer/JR and Felton vs. DeronBury.
Hell of a match up!
MDA is not anywhere to be seen!

You're right. It is why he doesn't like to have a traditional big man on the floor. I believe I had a quote that I posted once or twice where he said something to the effect that bigs slow down the flow of his offense.

Not a guess. Thats what he does. "Catch me if you can"..........
If it works its freaking cool to watch. If not, it sucks. It sucked.
I like MDA. I hope he has the Lakes run the West off its rails!

It's not speculation, you are right. Melo slows the game up for Dantoni when he goes in the post. Dantoni wanted Melo and his $100mil in the corner in a Shawne Williams/Steve Novak role jacking 3's and spacing the floor for Amare and Lin. Basicially Dantoni did not need Melo but since the Knicks are paying Melo $100mil it behooved them to get a new system in place cos you not paying a guy $100mil to stand in the corner!
