Knicks · David Stern vs Pop/Spurs (page 1)
He's quick to anger, quick about wrath, quick about vengeance, never balances the scales always works with a cheating pair, never bears loads but instead adds to them, vindictive, callous, arrogant, never humble always prideful, presumptuous, borderline discriminant....I could go on and on
I truly wish February of 2013 was his last day of office. It's painful we have to endure another full yr of his rulership
Kenny Smith made the best pts yesterday on this....He brought up how come Stern has never stepped in and questioned intent when teams tank at the end of seasons sitting players out of games with mysterious unidentified injuries/ players ending their seasons early with surgeries that could have been addressed many months prior too or referees ejecting players early in important games showing no patience. It took Stern a near half Decade to address FLOPPING, It took him 25yrs to start addressing his refs, but nope don't sit your players during a Nat televised game or else "I'LL SANCTION YOU"
If I'm the Spurs and these weighty fines go through I'd call him out to high heavens publicly and maybe beg for more fines.
I think it was Pop last year or the year prior to who DNPd Duncan right before (within hour I believe) the game was about to start and cited "Old." Come on this is who Pop is, he has never cheated the game by not doing his job as a coach and making sure his team is prepared come what may
Stern is just pissed off Pop exposed him for what he is. Yes scheduling has been incredibly egregious for some teams and without a just platform to address these concerns sometimes you have to resort to a higher means of communication. I hope to see more exposure and backlash from his decision making on his exodus, so it clearly mires his tenure as Commish
Stern is just nipping antics like this is the bud. Way to early in the season to be sending 4 starters home.
People pay good money to see the stars play. Im a NBA fan and I totally cosign Stern on this.
Last season, NBA deputy commissioner Adam Silver said the Spurs would not be disciplined after not bringing Duncan, Parker and Ginobili to a road game in Utah. Overall, Popovich held his top three players out of three games for rest last season."The strategic resting of particular players on particular nights is within the discretion of the teams," Silver told NBA.com in April with the qualifier that it was a lockout-shortened season. "And Gregg Popovich in particular is probably the last coach that I would second guess."
"It's the best thing for our team," Popovich said before Thursday's game. "Everybody has to make decisions about their schedule. We've done this before in hopes we're making a wiser decision and not a macho decision. Perhaps, it'll give us an opportunity to stay on the floor with Memphis on Saturday night.""If I was taking my 6-year-old son or daughter to the game, I would want them to see everybody, and if they weren't there, I'd be disappointed," Popovich said. "So I understand that perspective. Hopefully, people in that position will understand my perspective. My priority is the basketball team and what is best for it."
As far as Pop is concerened, you really cant defend him. How can you blame Stern fro trying to protct his business? I know everyone loves Pop, but what he did was disgraceful to the game. When is it okay to throw a game?
If you pay a ton of money as a fan to see Spurs - Heat, on National TV, you expect it to be a clash of titans.
If you're Greg Popovich, and you have a home game looming against the tough Memphis Grizzlies, you probably want to rest your vets on a road game against the Heat somehow.
I think if this is April and the Spurs clinched already, there's no big stink.
Because this is in the first month of the season, and it's a marquee matchup, Stern's pissed off.
No one wrong, but timing's everything.

So what you're saying is you're picking and choosing....You're saying the 15th game in the season is more important to a paying customer over another paying customer who has a ticket for the 60th game of the season...
NAH! that's straight up BS
Once again Stern has allowed Tanking for yrs....decades....So if I want to see Anthony Davis play Lebron in New Orleans and Davis sits because the Hornets want to rack up another loss and Miami sits Lebron and Wade and play Bosh 20min because they have a 8gm cushion on the division and 5gm cushion best record overall and it's the 65th game NO Biggie but if it's televised and it's the 15th game of the season and you do the same thing for other reasons unknown then that's a NO NO!
The customer who paid for his ticket on the 15th game was a season ticket holder at a discounted rate....the customer who paid for the ticket on the 65th was a casual fan and shelled out Top Dollar
Sorry you can't run a league this way people will see you aren't being transparent
Winning as well as players health is not on the agenda.
Pleasing casual fans all over the world is...
Nothing new.
That's why Knicks will be getting all this fathom calls and no-calls to punish them for slow and un-flashy game style.

WHILE i see your point and agree to a large extent, I wasn't aware until this morning that he just didn't sit the starters, he sent them home... Well I can see why stern was pissed.. and honestly that was a bit blatant by pop... people pay good money to see this product and stern wants to make sure that the NBA product is at it's best...
now I do agree that teams late in season tank, rest guys for playoffs, etc...which is why I would love to see the NBA adjust the way the lottery is done, so teams just can't tank and not try to win games(check my sig)... teams that do that deserve to lose the lottery...
Back to stern, he can be a bafoon and a bully, but i do see his point here... pop made it blatant, and stern is not going to let a NBA coach show him up..
Uptown wrote:Say what you want about Stern, but he has to be credited with doing a masterful job of marketing the NBA. People forget how bad of an image the NBA had before Stern took over. The league was ramsacked by drugs, and all kinds of madness. Have to give Stern some credit for cleaning up the image and league and bringing it back from the dark ages.As far as Pop is concerened, you really cant defend him. Commercialism/Players marketed the NBA not Stern..he gets some credit for globalization and TV deals but really just by way of nature things would progress outside the states because of player popularity and endorsements. Is the game more popular here in the States now compared to the Magic/Bird....Jordan era? I doubt it.
You realize Stern wasn't even responsible for putting the Dream Team together right? Which was probably the biggest stepping stone in taking the game Global
Actually Stern hasn't done anything to clean up the NBA. After he went semi anti urban pop culture on the Allen Iverson era we witnessed...
Kobe Rape
Brawl at The Palace
Knicks Sexual Harrassment Scandal
Tim Donaghy Scandal
Players openly demanding trades derailing teams
Coaches getting fired left and right
Free Agency Debacle
2 NBA lockout shortened seasons
2 Expansion Teams franchises bottoming out
2 Franchises relocating screwing fans over
Teams borrowing money at an alarming rate because of financial irresponsibility
Players literally robbing teams of their finances
Wreckless owners handing out THAT RIDICULOUS contracts
Record lows in season attendance
Rigged playoff games
Tanking
Flopping
Quality of play falling off at a rapid rate
Positions in the league have become near extinct
So no.... "YOU CAN SAY WHAT YOU WANT ABOUT STERN"

Once again it's been done before and not by him. Matter of fact by another team this season. Pop went a little extreme with it but nevertheless you crossing a very sensitive line here.
I think the Lakers literally stated last year they gave Kobe "a day off"....Brown saying something to the effect..."he could play if we needed him but he's played a lot of minutes so far this season"...Oh Really?
Let's say they're in the arena with Stern approved Ralph Lauren suits on and Tim Duncan is laughing smacking his hands silly Dallas game like because Splitter is "stylin on em" is that any better?
No it's not, because ultimately they aren't playing basketball when more than likely they could.

One way to avoid the tanking late in the season would be for a computer to randomly choose 30 games for each team, and then determine the lottery pick standings from there. That way, you wouldn't know if it was your first or last games that mattered; but teams that stink throughout the season would obviously be in the mix still.
Stern is deluded if he thinks his penalties will hold up or this new policy is even remotely workable.

for real. If I brought a ticket to that game, I'd be pissed off. I mean REALLY, REALLY pissed. That's just wrong. They want to pull stunts like this, give some of the money back

Would you be pissed if the Hornets sat Anthony Davis/Eric Gordon(back healthy from knee injury)/Austin Rivers so they can have a secure shot locking up Shabazz Mohammed in the summer draft scheduled to play OKC Brooks decides to sit Durant and Ibaka.... although that was the only game you could go to with your son in March?
The only ones screwed here is TNT
and the league should never had scheduled the Spurs for 4 games in 5 days. Ridiculous. Stern should've just called the Spurs and expressed his displeasure and tell them to knock it off. Then apologize for the schedule glitch.
Mray20 wrote:F*ck Popavich I still feel he tanked the 96-97 season after Robinson got injured and kept him him out purposely & fired Bob Hill so he could get a lottery pick and guess what pick he got #1 and drafted Tim Duncan the rest is history. He spat in everyones face by not only not playing the Spurs best 4 players but he actually sent them home to rest they weren't even on the bench with the rest of the team.
Agreed teams should be punished for purposely tanking it's been going on before 1996-1997 so why has Stern allowed this to happen? It's going to happen this year too.
Matter of fact all you're doing is pointing out how much more this should be done as tanking can shape the NBA for yrs to come, not sitting players out for 1 game just because it's nationally televised.
