This coach is really something else. He went into this game like a G! He never allowed the team to think for a minute that anything was different just cuz Melo was out. Overall this is a trait of Woody that has shown itself more and more and his team really BELIEVES!!! It takes a special kind of relationship with your players to get them to that level of "BUYING IN" as they say. I think Grunwald did Woody a solid by going out a getting him vets that he could talk to and get results. This team is clearly what Woody wanted and feels most comfortable with.
Not to just rag on Spoelstra but in this game he had no answers and Woody had all the questions. Pretty much all year so far Woody has had the edge over his coaching competition with only a few bad nights that I can remember. It's a testament to Woody's hard work and his time put in this summer reaching out to his players in a very real way. He's been kind of a father figure in some ways. It's been great to see the team take on his personality. Real G's don't talk about it they just get it done.

I don't know about you guys but if I was in a WAR I would want Woody leading me not Spolstra

Why is he patting these grown ass men on the head and calling them boy??? Woody being woody

Yea me and my sons, who regularly rag on Spoelstra, were remarking about how Woody had a much more productive huddle while Spoelstra looked lost and his instructions lacked passion. Not that this stuff necessarily means your team will actually execute, but in a tough road environment you need every edge you can get. Woody has his teams attention!!!

As a long time Knicks fan since the early 90's, coach Pat Riley of the early to mid 90's followed by Van Gundy of the mid 90's to early 2000's. These were the types of head coaches that I'm used to. Defense is how I learned the game of basketball. From watching defensive minded coaches work our players on a nighly basis. I supported D'Antoni because he never featured a true contender (roster/talent wise) but coach Woodson is who I hope we build a dynasty under. A defensive minded coach who our players not only respect, but play hard for under. I love how 90% of our fan base is in full support of coach Woodson. He's the perfect fit for the Mecca. New York Defense has returned to our franchise. Chants of defense have returned to the Garden. It's an amazing old school 1990's type of feeling.

While I fully agree with the Old School sentiment and started a thread before the season about that, actually what is making the Knicks so tough is that not only is the team defending well, but it's also the efficiency of the offense. I could see this coming before training camp. After seeing the moves the Knicks made I could see this team was going to take care of the ball better and play smart offensive BB. I didn't forsee this level of 3pt shooting cuz with all the talk by Woody of posting up I thought they'd look to go ISO more, but instead Woody decided to keep the more wide open aspects of the offense and now he's really into it. With an ISO heavy offense I didn't think we had enough pop offensively to score a lot. Woody opened it up more than I expected.
Remember late last year when he moved away from the spread offense stuff and all the 3's and little by little teams started keying on Melo and the ball wasn't moving anymore. Well Woody has fully bought into this spread the floor, high PnR and ball movement stuff. The combination is really making this team hard to stop and very efficient. With the spread floor the middle is always open and so is the 3pt line, as long as the ball is moving. This allows Tyson to roam the paint and Felton to have some drives to the hoop. It also allows for Melo and Sheed to get some post ups with room to operate. At the same time it makes it tough for teams to cover the Knicks inside in the post and off PnR and also get back to the 3pt shooters. Thank God for Kidd!!! He really keeps the ball moving and it's contagious.

You know how front runners go.
This is the season gentlemen (as most have been saying all along)
Time to get on board and root hard!

Woody is a father figure to the players, they really look up to him

I love this coach,. He's legit. My dad pointed this out - he's the last active direct disciple of Red Holzman. That should mean something to every legit Knicks fan and if it doesn't let me know so I can put you on my ignore list

Woodson has great mentors (Knight, Holtzman and Brown) and it seems as though he picked up a lot from them. He is the right guy at the right time and the GM did a great job getting the right players. I wish they were younger but they are all High IQ basketball players that play the game the right way.
This team can contend for the title as long as they stay healthy and focused.
Awesome win last night. Miami tried to pull away in the 2nd quarter but NY would not let them. Then in the 3rd, it was all NY!
Oh and Felton is a leader and a big game player. He is tough, he is NY. Yes, he is better than Lin and the move to get him was great. I was wrong. I still like Lin and will root for him to do well though except when he plays the Knicks.
playa2@ 12/7/2012 9:08 AM
Funny, nobody thought he was that great in ATLANTA.
I knew the day he was hired in NY as an assistant he was going to replace Danphoney someday.
misterearl@ 12/7/2012 9:24 AM
Nobody though Joe Torre was great in Atlanta either

playa2 - notice how well Atlanta is playing without Joe Johnson?
Timing is everything.
Mike Woodson and Darrell Walker are legacy Knicks. They played here and understand the culture. The international scouts are strong. The Assistants are on the case. Ben Jobe gives the scouting staff the benefit of decades of basketball innovation. SSOL is nothing but a marketing hook. Ben Jobe INVENTED the uptempo style of play that the pros mimicked. (Yes, nixluva, you could look it up before you defend the dude who is gone)
Ben Jobe invented it.

Great Points Misterearl !
The knicks went for along time with without having former players back around the bench to instill knicks pride and what it really meant to be a Knick ( even some of the fans forgot-"Danphoney lovers"). They all had to go elsewhere to coach, but know Dolan(Zeke)is bringing them all home..... it's like family again.

The knicks have many leaders, that's what makes the team so good.

Woody is a smart dude. To say that he hasn't implemented some of MDA offense is a little myopic. I believe Woody even stated before that he taken and learned a lot of MDA ball, but he has implemented a lot of his stuff too. It is a very good combination that he seems to have perfected. SSOL is no longer the mantra but the plays that MDA used is there. One example is the plays to get Novak open. That dive play is so simple but so effective for somebody like Novak.
AnubisADL@ 12/7/2012 9:48 AM
Woody consistently got the Hawks to the playoffs. The Hawks just didn't have the talent to get over the hump.
Still waiting for Josh Smith to take his game to the next level.

this offense clearly has 's fingerprints all over the offense. I'd say it's just as myopic though to suggest the team isn't hasn't vastly improved since departed and Woody took over. This is the equivalent of Don Nelson getting told to leave and Jeff Van Gundy stepping in and preaching defense first. I'm convinced the reason Van Gundy finally unleashed Spree and Camby in the 99 playoffs is because of something he learned with Nelson that he probably would have never considered prior
ChuckBuck@ 12/7/2012 11:22 AM
Only thing Woody borrowed from MDA is the High PnR with Felton and Chandler. We don't run SSOL, we use the clock.
The rest: Double screens, spread with shooter camping in the corner(every team runs this), Posting with Melo and Sheed, and ISOs for Melo, Ray, and JR are all Woodson's playbook.

Jeff unleashed Spree and Camby because of other injuries warranted it, he was as stubborn as a mule.
