Incredible? He's shooting 40% from the field and 38% from 3 and that's with his red hot start. I'll give it to you that he's not turning the ball over nearly that much and he's giving his all on defense, but incredible? He's hardly been good.

I said it in another thread, I don't remember the last time JR played a good game. Sure, he hit the game winner against Charlotte but before that he didn't do much.

They are a dying breed in this league. They seem to have been replaced by combo guards and scoring point guards. Most teams seem to put in a defensive SG- we're not much different from most teams in the league. It's a shame- I used to like watching guys like Allan Houston shooting away.

JR Smith should just try to penetrate more often, right when he catches the ball, take it right in and if he does not think he can finish then look for the open man.

He has to stop with the dribble, 1v1 moves, that will end up with less time on the shot clock to work with, and low % shots.
It is a bad habit of his, to try to penetrate then pull back after dribbling out 6 seconds of doing NOTHING, then he relies on the off balanced step back, off the dribble, pull up to bail him out. When there is no time, I don't mind him using this move, but to use consistently because he knows he can get his shot off is a bad habit.

Outside of Felton and without Melo at PF, he is the only other play that has the ability to penetrate.
Players such ass Kidd, Novak, Brewer, Pablo, Wallace, Chandler, Thomas, and Camby can all play off penetration as they are small/high IQ players.
Regardless, he is the 2nd best player that has the ability to penetrate off the dribble, at least till Shump gets in shape.

Good things happen when you penetrate to the paint...

1) either easy basket with layup/dunk

or

MISS the shot BUT
--------------------

A) miss and could get 2 shots
B) get offensive rebound for possible easy put back, especially Chandler/Wallace/Melo/Thomas/hopefully Camby soon

2) breaking down opponents defense and earning a step or good look/Wide open shot for a team mate

For players like Kidd, Novak, Pablo, Wallace, Chandler, Brewer, and Kurt Thomas, it would be great if JR can bring it good penetration consistently.
It was one of the things that he did well, early in the first few games.
It just opens up the game for him and everyone around him, only a few players in the whole squad has this ability, and he has to acknowledge this.
He doesn't even need to get the assist, as we often have 4 shooters to spread the floor, and he could get the "hockey assist"

Just looking at how much Kemba Walker has improved from his rookie year to this year, is the difference on how much Shump could have improved especially with his work ethic during the off season.

Instead he has to now work to regain his athleticism, confidence, speed/quickness, and was unable to improve his game.
It was the same for All Stars like Derrick Rose and Westbrook's 2nd year vs their rookie year.

Brewer looks like he is playing injured or hurt and should look to shut it down when Melo returns till he recovers at 100% with James White/Novak/Pablo and even Copeland getting some his minutes.

Also with Kidd as our SG, we only have 2 PG's with Felton/Pablo and Pablo just doesn't have the speed/quickness to penetrate and defend the younger/quicker guards consistently.
I think we should look to acquire a guard that has the ability to do both, to relieve some pressure off Felton as he even has trouble staying in front of quicker/faster guards in the league.

I should say we should atleast try James White at SG. R Brewer just has not looked healthy and not himself. Why not give White a 28 minute chance for 2-3 games at SG?

I think White will get there eventually. Woodson slowly takes chances with people and he would have a hard time cutting JR's minutes cause he really likes him. The only problem is White doesnt have much room for any mistakes.

50%TS is sickening. felton is even worse at 49.8%TS

this is going to be an issue, and when melo regresses to his anemic 54-55%TS it only makes it worse.

Fields is trash. Brewer defends and can hit a layup.

But I don't know why Woodson seems like he doesn't want to give White any time out there.
Yesterday was clearly one of the better opportunities White could've gotten to play, and he actually did pretty well the brief time he actually play.
Melo was out, as are still Stat and Shumpert, neither Brewer nor JR could hit anything, and even though White impressed when he played he was still benched shortly after.

Not saying he's someone we should "count on", but I will admit to liking his style of play, especially if it's more efficient than JR has been recently (even though I'm sure he'll start playing better once again).

+1. I was screaming at the TV (ok not literally) for Woodson to throw in some hungry bench players. Felton can't sustain being the 'alpha dog' all the time, and no perimeter player in our regular rotation stepped up last night. (But I loved seeing ol' crazy eyes scoring ... "six points for Thomas, new season high"). I would have liked to see more of White, and Copeland as well.

exactly. Copeland and White should get some play in the second quarter of every game.

Morris Almond.

It's a shame no shooting guards know how to shoot.

You either have PGs who like to score or hybrid undersized scoring guards in PG bodies like ben gordon and kemba walker.
