Except for that 4-6 game slump-this guy is playing at all star type level. on both sides of ball with rebounding and passing as well.
I dont know about that but he is playing himself into a contract larger than the Knicks can afford which is bad news for us.
Hopefully Grunwald can swing a deal for a RFA guard before the deadline.
You mean we shouldn't have maxed out Amare & Melo and through so much money at Novak, Camby and Felton?
No he isn't- whats with the collective amnesia? He goes through hot spells, then he cools down and goes through slumps. During the slumps these boards are awash with people saying he sucks, he's stupid, his shot selection is terrible and he's a chucker. They forget that he is capable of being good. During his hot spells, posters declare him a magnificent player, that he's 'finally turned the corner', that Woodson has really go the best out of him, that he should start. They then erase all knowledge of him when he was slumping from their minds.
I like JR, but the reason he doesn't have a big contract is because he's so inconsistent- he's either really good or really bad, and rarely anything in between. What I find bizarre is how many people seem to forget this, and just see him as being as good or as bad as his last 3 or 4 games.
Oh and I predict he has a stinker of a game on January 1st!
You forgot that he is Kobe without the discipline
Anyone figure what we can pay him? We get his bird rights this year?

There are lots of players out there who are inconsistent that are getting paid..Gallo for one...He is making 10 mil per...Wil Chan is making 7/8 mil per...

He'd need to be here 3 years for Bird rights. 2 years is Early Bird rights which means we can offer around $5M/year.

Yup, and that's pretty much what he'll get on the open market.
Teams know that his success is strictly ties to the Knicks and Woodson.
We could've really used Lin after JR leaves. This is a 3yr plan but looking more like a 1yr plan and 2 extra years of cap hell, injuries and mediocrity. Once JR leaves, Kidd, Camby, Sheed, Thomas and Amare breakdown we will be left with
Tyson
Melo
Brewer
Shumpert
Felton
-------
Cope
Prigioni
Novak
White

Not exactly- we're kind of screwed in that with early bird rights I think we'd have to use the MLE to get to that 5 mil. However if we use that much, we trigger the hard cap, which basically would screw us. So really the most we could offer him would be the MMLE which is 3 mil. I could be wrong, but I vaguely remember someone writing this over the Lin/Novak? But then again that wouldn't make sense as what would be the advantage of early bird rights if you have to use the MLE anyways?

Not true, early bird players are eligible to make average NBA salary, just over 5 mil, 5.3 to be exact.
We don't have to use the MLE on JR at all.
It's the exact situation with LIn, and we did not have to use the MLE on him either.
Unlike Lin, they will match anything JR receives. They will have to think of a new excuse though. My bet is they will say revenue from JR Jersey sales as well as the money he brings to MSG will more than pay for his contract.

Unlike Lin, JR can't be an rfa, he's been in the league too long, if he signs a contract, he's out.
No one is giving him more than 5, he'll be a Knick...no worries here.

That was only referring to restricted free agents; JR will be an unrestricted free agent.

Except we don't have the right to match contract offers for JR. Lin was a restricted free agent which is why we had the option to match that contract.
J.R. Smith is basically Melo with slightly more horrific shot selection.....oh and he's a little shorter and not as heavy.

Phew- but does it mean no other team can offer him more than what Lin got via a poison pill contract?
