Knicks · JR Smith is playing his way to a 50mm $ contract (page 4)

We better win it all this year if we are going to lose J.R , Woodson is the only coach who has shown he knows how to deal with him as a person and a player. He might revert to some of his old habits if he has a coach who doesn't stay on him.

I agree with this and maybe JR kinda figures our that Woody is his coach that got him where he is right now. In yall opinions, what other coach could handle JR? I think JR knows this but the fact that JR is looking for a long team contract puts him in a quandry. If the Knicks get close to a ring this yr I think Jr could be convinced to stay for another run at the Chip.JMHO

AnubisADL @ 12/29/2012 7:58 PM
I can see Smith taking a little less to stay. If someone offers him 7-8 per he would be an idiot to stay.

Ill be the first to admit I jumped on him when he had his 5 game meltdown but the honesty is hes closer to the player we see now and hes 10X more mature of a player person that even 1 year ago. He has huge value--look at what is available. 20-5-5 is worth 10mm$

No matter what his numbers end up being by season's end from a best case scenario Brigg he's not getting $50mil....lol

Did Jamal Crawford play himself into a lucrative contract after his successful seasons in the Atl?

AnubisADL @ 12/29/2012 8:02 PM
Crawford is old. Smith is not.
Nalod @ 12/29/2012 8:03 PM
Crawford is not a child off court.

Dollars to Donuts more than half the gms in the league would rather have Crawford over Smith right now. This is with Crawford almost making 2 times what Smith makes now

What you're not getting $50mil is a helluva lot more than $21mil which Crawford makes over the course of his 4yr contract with the Clippers. Smith ain't Sniffin $50 guap from no one.

JR is a better rebounder and defender. Really am impressed with him here. He has also started to look for other players lately which is nice though I don't trust that he will do this in a big spot.

He's slowy turning into my favorite Knick even though he has his droughts.

lets see if you still like him after the playoffs.

That will be the true test

RonRon @ 12/29/2012 9:53 PM
not saying JR WILL GET 50 million dollars on a 5 year contract

but if he continues to play like he is on both ends, he has grown much since a 6th man type scorer
He is still in his prime and his he has never made that big pay day yet either
Woodson certainly has brought the best production out of JR Smith and keeps him focused, much more consistent, and positive

Without the DEF, he game resembles much of OJ Mayo's

younger Terry without the IQ and consistent shooting, ball handling, but better defense

It is hard to figure out what the value is with this new CBA

Fields/Terry/Courtney Lee are players that make 5+ mill per year and JR Smith has been outproducing them by light years
Only Jamal Crawford bring's what JR does WITHOUT THE DEF

If Eric Gordon, Steph Curry, Iggy, Dragic, and some other players were able to get contracts at 8-10m + per year

I would not be surprised if a team offers JR Smith a contract that is much greater than we can offer at 5m per year.
IF Sun's were willing to offer Eric Gordon "MAX" money for 4 years, I think there is a good chance they would offer him a nice salary as well.

Question is, does he really get it or is this just a 1 year wonder with the veterans on the Knicks that keep him in checked with Woody?
JR's DEF, clutch shooting, TEAM WORK/facilitating skills, and maturity
His improvement in all area's have made him a much more complete player
It might be best shot to cash in with the progress he has made this year

JR is a crucial piece, in order for us to compete, in the playoffs and for a ring, in these next couple years
He is our 2nd more talented player on our roster and our most versatile defender with Iman *injury though*
He has surprised me very much this year and I think many teams will have interest in him during the trade deadline and in the summer

RonRon @ 12/29/2012 9:59 PM
This is JR Smith best year in his whole entire career in the league
He is a good 2nd/3rd option scorer and his been defending 2-3 positions every night and usually the toughest G/F against our opponents
JR Smith deserves much credit with for the work and focus he has put in along with Woody, Kidd, Wallace, and the team vets/coaching staff

Does Grunweld have tricks up his sleeves to keep him like

Offering a 3-4 year 5m per year with the raises, player/team options on year 2 and 3 with with partial guaranteed $$$?

For instance

Year 1, 5m
year 2, team option 2m guaranteed *so can we not pick up his option, then when we have full bird rights, offer him another contract?*
year 3 player option *for security purposes for JR

similar to how Camby and Vince Carter's contract was constructed?
If not, it is very possible that we will lose him in the off season.
So far he is looking like he is AT LEAST 7-8m+ per year

or

If a good deal comes a long, lets say Isiah Thomas, James Johnson, and Garcia *expiring* or John Salmon/Jason Thompson and 1st round pick

for

JR Smith/Camby/Kurt Thomas to mentor Cousins and open PT for Thomas Robinson

Would Grunweld have interest in moving him at the trade deadline, knowing we would probably lose him for NOTHING in the off season?
I think we need JR Smith all round game to have a shot at a ring for this year unless Iman comes back like Adrian Peterson...

We are currently weak in backup PG, Pablo is closer to 3rd string but he is our 2nd string PG with Felton out for a month, and Kidd closer to SG than a PG
A PG that can penetrate and facilitate

SG/SF that can shoot and play both ends consistently
mobile PF to team up with TYson Chandler together and work efficiently, that can block shots consistently *with 2 shot blockers it would help our TEAM DEF much more*, run the court well, and play the weakside with solid DEF like what JJ did for us last year

JR Smith/Kurt Thomas/White or Brewer for Sessions and either Gerld Henderson/Jeffery Taylor/Hakim Warrick

Didn't we pay Jamal Crawford a bunch of money? Maybe not $10M/year but $7M or $8M? All it takes is one team to overpay, look at the contracts given to Charlie Villanueva, Ben Gordon, Roy Hibbert, Travis Outlaw, etc.

No one is giving J.R. Smith $50mil please put all crack pipes down. Most of the guys you mentioned with exception to Hibbert is the very reason he'll never get close to that kind of money. Most of them were coming off their rookie scale contracts and were even younger.

lol @ you guys talking yourself into agreeing with Brigg's way over the top impossibility.

The maximum we can offer is 4 years around $20M. You think it's impossible that some other team could offer 5 years $35M?

gunsnewing @ 12/29/2012 10:54 PM
Right $35-38mil is 7-8 per or 4yrs $32mil

I think it's impossible for a team to offer him $50 in the a world of reality. Now next question is $35mil $50mil....N and O spells NO! Do I think a team will offer him $35mil? Nope

For crying out loud O.J. Mayo didn't even get $35mil offered to him.

I don't think he gets a contract that cracks $30mil from anyone.
