Knicks · We dont need Brewer for D (page 2)
BRIGGS wrote:What player on the Clippers is a Kobe stopper or a Lebron stopper? None--they have small guards in both units but they play the 3rd best D in the league. The Clippers make the other team go on the defensive because every position can put up 20 any given night including the bench. Brewer is a detrimant to the team--the guy that the other team can use to go double carmelo. Go get me a guy who can score 10 points grab a few rebounds and shoot 45%. This 0-3 in 17 minutes is a waste of time for us.
His signing was the most MYTHICAL of all our signings this summer. He's PURE TRASH

We're going to be stop gapping for the next 2-3yrs. Not exactly what a real CONTENDING team does because then there's the built in excuse
"We've never had a true core rotation playing together while Melo's been here waaaahhnn waaaahn waaahn"

Sounds like you rather have Danfoni's 7 seconds or less system. You should've went out west with him. Even if you like Danfoni's speed ball, it doesn't make since to change it back now....Last time I checked, we currently have a winning record, playing like a top team in the East.
Yes, if we had our terrible coach back, with the clippers players, sure...you are right. Don't need any Kobe or Lebron stoppers. Oh, and before I forget, let me give you some insight....THERE'S ONLY ONE KOBE OR LEBRON STOPPER. His name is FATHER TIME.
All you want Brewer for is to slow them guys down...Make it hard on them to score, and soak up fouls. Versus using JR Smith, who's just learning how to score in a controlled system, and growing up before our own eyes. Don't need to use up his energy guarding these superstars, as an undersized SF. With Kidd and Felton providing even less defensive resistance.
Brewer has a lot of value on this team since he's still the best defender at the SF position (until Shump is back). You can't rely on Melo to out score everybody, to win consistently....especially during the playoffs.
Basically, you have to pick your poison, until we find a better SG / SF that can defend and shoot an open jumper. Brewer was the best option, at the best price, at the right time. Why even waste time arguing over a guy that's making pennies.
With our current back court, we are a liability on defense (until Shump comes back). And when he returns, you still need a defensive swingmen off the bench as his replacement. Run and Gun left MSG when Danfoni went west. In comes slow and grind Woodson, focusing on defensive stops and not just scoring the most points.
It all depends on your philosophy. Mine is simple....OFFENSE WINS GAMES....DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS! Bye Bye Danfoni....Hello Woodson....Old school defensive Knicks are back (With a shot of Nova-cane from deep), for the next few years at least! Get used to it. Woodson will continue to add offensive limited players, specializing in defense.
The best thing we can do right now, is double up on Brewers shooting classes, and rest him during Shumps return so he can heal! After this is all said and done, Shumps return might be the best timing for this team. Just watch, we will need Brewer when it counts. He just needs to stop shooting and go back to his slashing ability with those back door cuts to the rim. Instead of hanging around the 3 pt line.
Bonn1997 wrote:We saw what Brewer can do when healthy. I can't think of any explanation for how badly he's playing other than that he's not healthy.
I suspect that too- his decline started right after that game his knee swelled up and he got put on a 20min cap. But then again it could be just a mental thing- we've seen this many times in the past where a player seems to completely lose their game while playing in NY- don't know if its the pressure or criticism or what (last year it was TD, before that, Landry Fields).
Brewer showed he can be a great contributer to this team, so I'd rather we focus on getting his mind and body back, than kicking him off the team.
BigDaddyG wrote:We don't need Brewer for his D, but we need him for his fouls. We can't risk putting Melo or Kidd on our opponents best wings because we need them on offense as well. I'm hopeful Brewer rounds back into shape. He had one year in Utah where he was solid offensively. He's never been a guy who creates off the dribble consistently. He's a guy who understands spacing and can move without the ball. Maybe part of the reason he's been ineffective is that the rest of the team isn't doing a good job of finding him when he's open?
He's doing a Landry Fields on us. Remember how Fields was the Knicks darling in his rookie season? Slowly but surely, his game faded into oblivion. Finally, not matching his contract offer was a blessing.

At the very least, he was always a positive on defense on any team he was on, but he is not handling even that. He looks like the obvious weak link on the court. I am really looking forward to the day Shumpert replaces him because we will be that much more formidable.
There is no reason to start him except of Woody stubbornness.
From other hand he is useless on the second unit even more that on the first.
Even Cope makes more sense. Cope cannot defend anybody but at list he can score.

Its pretty simple--you are wrong. You are over rating brewer's D and effectiveness to the team. Most of Brewer's playing time comes in period 1--when we have been at our worst defensively. It also puts pressure on the offense because pother teams can lay off him and go double others. Just check the factual data of when the Knicks are at worst on the defensive end of the floor over the last 10 games--its period 1. In the last 10 games Ron Brewer is a -47 shooting 21% in an average of roughly 17 minutes a game. You have had a few of these long rants and guess what--youve been wrong every time. Try using facts instead of long-winded diatribes filled with fluff. Ron Brewer is one of the worst players in the NBA right now over the last 10 games statistically and it is showing materially within our poor 1st Q's.
But he is trash when it comes to basketball.. the end...

correction....
"Ron Brewer is one of the worst players in the NBA right now over the last 10 games statistically and it is showing materially within our poor 1st Q's."
Ron Brewer is one of the worse STARTING players in the League now
the other is Kurt Thomas
Jason Kidd at PG is not far behind with yesterday's play
I don't know any other roster in the entire NBA that does not have a single player on their starting roster that does not have the ability to penetrate
Melo's is our closest but with Kurt Thomas and Chandler together, don't expect the paint to not be crowded
Most NBA team's also have 2 PG's or ball handler's, if not 1 very quick PG with a good handle
On a more serious note
It is more on the team than anything....
I don't think it's fair to blame it all on Brewer, he started playing poorly after he injured something, I forgot what.
It just hurts the roster much more with the loss of Felton, as well as our other injuries
Like how Phil Jackson used the word "clumsy" to describe Amare, Melo, Tyson, it is the same with our current starting lineup of
Kidd
Brewer
Melo
Kurt Thomas
Chandler
On a funny question
Is Melo the fastest/quickest one on this lineup, our starting PF from the start of the season?
who is 2nd, 3rd, and last? It won't be much apart from 2nd to last though....
