Knicks · Why Knicks are so boring lately? (page 2)

Sad. Uncreative and dull.
Give something to get something. Work harder. Be creative. Simply Bitching and moaning is sucks.
Have to agree. All teams no matter how good they are have games like they did in Philly. This includes poor performances by their star players. The Boston game and all the pre game hype clearly took something out of them. Not to mention the return of Felton didn't provide the boost the team needed. Still plenty of time for him to get back to where he was at the start of the season.
Should they have been more professional and handled their business? We all know the answer to that. Still, games like these happen, no point in going into full freakout mode. The only real concern I have is the overall health of the team by the time the playoffs come around. When its time, I'm confident in Kidd's ability and experience to lead this team either as a starter or off the bench. I'm also confident in a team that has a great deal of championship and playoff experience as well. Once the rotation more or less settles I believe this team will start playing more consistent ball again.
I think the problem is that the Knicks have been playing no defense, featuring an ISO offense, and putting forth minimal effort in a number of games prior to the Philly game last night. We've seen that theyre better than this so its all the more frustrating when they dont play like it.
That's a fair point, we aren't playing like we did to start the season. One big reason this team was playing so well was due to everyone knowing their role and knew what to expect from their teammates.
Once the injuries started to pile up and the rotation and the lineups seem to change almost daily, that cohesion was gone. I don't know of any other team save the Lakers that have had as many players going in and out of the rotation and yet we're still near the top of the east.
I have to put some of it on Woodson for giving the green light to players when they should have gotten at least a caution. A more stable rotation I believe will get us back the cohesion this team needs badly. In the meantime its on the players to share the ball and play hard. I agree they aren't playing as hard as they did in earlier. the season.

No one woke up and decided to "hate" on Melo for the hell of it,
20-56 last two games
Because Knick fans think they're smarter than they actually are- Ewing got blasted throughout his career to the point that people used to insist we were better off without him. People always complaining he was too selfish and took too many shots, much the same as the attacks on Melo.
Was that all along or only toward the end of Ewing's career?
it was towards the end of ewings career, when the long love affair was wearing off..... but for 99% of his career he was loved and respected here...

I'm usually one to agree with optimism and subscribe to the "bad games happen" fact. However, I agree that this team is not playing with the same desire. We've been very average since mid December. We are incorporating Shump, Felton and stat back in. But I'd like to see some of that November basketball pretty soon so I don't loose complete faith that this is a contender.
As I pointed out in another post, I believe that when the rotation isn't changing by the game this team will play better. Not a guarantee of course. Stat is looking good, Shump looks pretty fast. I couldn't believe the strides he took to the rim on one drive although he missed. looked like he went the length of the court in just a couple of steps. Felton will get better, thats three players who I believe are going to inject some energy into this squad. When we get Sheed/Camby back I believe this team will start playing like they did earlier in the season. If we were closer to the playoffs I would be more concerned.

I'm very sorry to hear that earl. I have a long time friend who has been suffering through the same illness so I can empathize. I agree, it always seems to happen to the nicest people.

Hmmm- a bit of revisionist history by you two there! Ewing was heavily criticised throughout his career- it wasn't just during his end days. Come on, you don't honestly remember? People used to attack him for not being clutch among many many other things all the time.
With that said Melo should never be mentioned in the same breathe as Ewing

Revisionist history 101.
Ewing came in hyped as the instantaneous Savior. They were ripping up posters of him at MSG as early as his rookie and soph seasons. See Patrick Ewing: Standing Tall.
Ewing got shredded in the media and was consistently known as unapproachable and unloved by both the media and, at times the fan base:
He was not approachable. He was not beloved. He was not good enough or lucky enough to win an NBA title. - Ian O'Connor
Golly, does this sound familiar?
Yeah, I know, Melo shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Ewing. Or maybe even Patrick Eddie.
Unfortunately for the Melohaters among us, a hack at the level of O'Connor seems to think it's okay to mention them in the same sentence. Several times, actually.

Savior hate. It's a terrible thing in NYC.

He was heavily criticized his whole career, mainly for being a ball hog and refusing to pass out of the post.
For as great as he was, he was an awful passer and killed ball movement.

Was it just me, or was watching him repeatedly set pointless picks 35 feet from the basket as annoying as hell?
And I loved Ewing. Still do.

he didn't bother to work on his game at a big man's camp. pete newell worked with both olajuwon and shaq and the improvement was dramatic for them. had he developed genuine footwork and learned some genuine passing skills the knicks could have won a title with ewing.
i never liked ewing's game for the reasons you stated. his demeanor just made matters worse.
imagine if dwight howard didn't have ewing as his coach but had olajuwon instead or if the magic had held on to clifford ray-- the same clifford ray who was hired by the celtics and who taught kendrick perkins.
below is a link to a great article about ewing and pete newell. really sums it up for me.

If you have a negative opinion of an all time knick great like Ewing, then honestly you will never be positive about any player or team we have- why do you have such perfectionist standards, man? Hope you're not that hard on yourself!

We actually agree on something at last! I'd love to see us play the way we were those first 7 games. I'm really not sure if we'll see another 7 game stretch like that during the season, but I fall back on the hope that when the playoffs start, we'll see that team again. What I liked about the Knicks from 97-99 is that although we struggled and were up and down during the season, we turned it up when the playoffs started- if you can't switch gears in the playoffs the result is that Miami series we had last year, and no one wants to see that again!
