Agree on Novacs
They need to eliminate the 3rd wheel of this Tri-fecta of the past (Jeremy Lin/ Landry Fields / S.Novacs)
You cant run Novacs out of town too quickly for me, he gets minutes & wastes them! I am a Novacs fan but cannot support him anymore he seems more
lost than ever & he should be fighting for offense and shots, get to free throw line, Novacs dont do none of that & has become too predictable and
he's accepted being stopped. A legit non-factor when he cant drain 3's
I agree with this list, but I think you left a guy that has surprisingly been a disappointment this year:
Raymond Felton
Yes, the guy has been injured and the guy sometimes plays with tenacity and fire penetrating through what seems the whole oppoaing team.
But what we needed from him was to steady the offense, make sure the ball kept moving and get guys like Melo, Amar'e and Chandler the ball where they like to. Yet its really been a mess on offwnse, especially since his return. Oh, and do we talk about his defense? He was never this horrible his first time around. Wth!
I really thought we were set as a team once Shumpert came back, but now I believe we need to upgrade PG and even starting SG because Shump is still an offensive liability, only with no defenae this time around. And yea, both players maybseem to be excused because of the injuries, but that is a big problem with this team, they always get the free pass:
The lost because its hard to be motivated against a bad team.
They lost because they played a better team.
They didn't play defense because... I'm not even gonna try becaue that one is inexcusable.
Copeland must be really dogging it in practice on D to be so far into the newly christened Woody dog house. He went from trade showcasing time to permanent towel waving fixture.
I seem to remember Priggy excelling better on the O when Cope is on the floor, too.
I'm still tied to Novak. I just don't get how someone 6'10 doesn't defend. Maybe he can spend this summer at Fishlips' big man camp?

this has been reported on several times.
2 major problems defensively: Most of them don't defend screens properly and nobody is rotating on d when the help comes. Novak is about the only guy that defends screens well but he has been getting exposed a bit recently off the dribble. At least he's trying. Chandler/Melo/Amare are all lazy, JR is making foolish mistakes, and the other guys are just not staying in front of their man. But more than anything it's the bigs killing us. I've seen the clips of practice/film room on the Woodson show. His philosophies are right, I guess he's just not getting through to the players.

I agree, our big 3 is extremely inconsistent on D, particularly Tyson (far from what we expect from the DPOY). Melo and Amar'e will just randomly tighten up on D or slack off possession to possession and Tyson takes whole games off at a time. I'd actually like to see Brewer out there for 10 minutes or so to see if he can pester guys a little bit.
ah yes...
Lenny couldnt get them to defend. Larry couldnt. Isiah couldnt. MDA couldnt... and now Woody is the scapegoat. Always cracks me up when fans think its the coaches fault for not coaching defensive effort.

Ask the clippers what they think of our zone
Novak is far from our worst defender. This team gets exposed on pick and rolls more than anything. It's mainly boiling down to Tyson, but Melo and Amare are just as bad, except they are getting attacked less. These 1-5 pick n rolls are murdering us. It doesn't matter if its Ray, Jason, or Pablo. They can't get over the screen that fast. It's not possible. Chandler is our biggest defensive culprit period. Woody has explained what needs to happen. Tyson isn't getting up far enough. It's exactly what MDA had all his success with. You can't play pick n roll defense like this and expect to get stops. So I'll repeat it: Tyson Chandler is our worst defender.
LOL, how is Novak far from our worst defender, unless you are judging on a curve.

I can type LOL's too. That isn't getting anywhere. The guy isn't responsible for that many points given up. He actually can defend a screen and close out on a shooter unlike half of the guys on this squad. If teams went at him more in iso situations he'd probably get exposed but that hasn't happened much yet.
Novak gets beat back door a lot
So does Felton, Kidd, Shump, Amare, Melo, Tyson, Prigioni, JR...am I missing anyone?
My big issue is not Novak's defense. He's not great, but he's not awful either. My big issue is Novak's rebounding. The guy is 6'10" and rebounds like a SG. If he wants to play like a SG, then he should be able to defend them too.
I agree with Tyson not showing up sometimes. That's disappointing. He's our major big; when his head is not there, we get crushed on the boards.
As for the defense; I think it's going to take some more time. Shumpert is a big part of that, and he's not the lockdown defender right now that he's been in the past. Meanwhile a few of our other bigs are out; I'm willing to wait for Camby and/or Sheed before judging this team's defense.

A decent amount. But it's not backdoor cuts that we are consistently getting burned on. Still, it needs to be tightened up.
sorry backdoor and pick n roll. It is maddening for a team that predicates itself on playing championship caliber defense

Sorry, Not sure what you're refering to. Novak is a solid and consistent pick and roll defender. Arguably the best on the team in that situation. If you meant something else, my apologies. I just assumed we were on the Novak debate here.
