Chandler said the team has done "a good job of maintaining" without Wallace and Camby, but he knows they are "key pieces to our success."

"Hopefully we get those guys back. We need them," Chandler said. "Hopefully they're ready to come back as we come back from this All-Star break."

In the first eight games of the season, when the Knicks went 7-1, Wallace proved his defensive value in limited minutes. In fact, at the time, out of the 218 players in the NBA who had defended at least 50 one-on-one plays, he held players to the second-lowest field goal percentage (26.3).

As it still stands, Wallace and Pablo Prigioni make up the best Knicks' two-man defensive combo -- with a minimum of 100 minutes played together -- as they held opponents to 81.1 points per game. Both represent defensive pressure consistency -- something Camby possesses and something the Knicks haven't had lately.

Strong posting P2.

We need sheed and Camby. Those two strengthen Tyson, Amare and gets Melo off the 4.

If RashWeed can't go then we fill the gap with someone else. won't have the skill set but are short two bigs in the rotation.

I think that will come with time (Shump) and rest (JKidd)

Its not really so much about Sheed as it is about having a legitimate backup C. Right now we have one center on the team, Chandler. Soon as he sits, the mediocre defense becomes terrible. It does not really matter who plays backup C, Sheed, Camby, whoever we trade for, just need somebody.

Wallace will not be ready to play tomorrow in Indiana, and how long he’s able to stay healthy is anyone’s guess. In the best-case scenario, he becomes the final piece to the Knicks’ championship push. If Wallace suffers a setback and breaks his foot, the Knicks could cut him and sign a free-agent forward, such as Kenyon Martin or Lou Amundson.

Wallace’s uncertainty presents Knicks general manager Glen Grunwald with impetus to trade for another big man by Thursday’s deadline, even though center Marcus Camby (plantar faciitis) is also expected back very soon.

“Rasheed likes the situation in New York, likes the team, thinks they can win and wants to make whatever contribution he can make,’’ his agent, Bill Strickland, told The Post. “He wants to contribute and feels he can on the floor or even off the floor. Even if he’s not dressing, he feels he can make a contribution with leadership and his championship experience. That’s why he’s been traveling with them.’’

Losing their defensive moxie, the Knicks have been a pedestrian 15-13 since Wallace went down. The medical staff rested him this long to make sure his condition doesn’t turn into a season-ending stress fracture.

The stats that many haven't noticed.^

A lot of people overreacting to to our resent struggles because Sheed and Camby are out. 3rd in offense. 16th in defense. Get healthy, fix the defense and the game will be easier on the offensive end. No more trailing by double digits right out of the gate anymore
