The three most important players on this team are Melo/Chandler/Felton. If one of them isn't playing well, the rest of the team has trouble picking up the slack.

why do the Knicks always make bad deals. Either they overpay for flawed players or they tarde for old over the hill players

Gay isn't even that good, he's an average defender and an inefficient scorer whose making a ton of money. Ed Davis has a lot of potential, Tayshaun Prince is a solid veteran and Austin Daye can be a nice role player.
You can say Memphis blew their title chances, but with Gay they never really had title chances.
