If there's one thing I could fix about the Knicks, that would be it. (Shot selection would be #2).
I get that it's a hard play to defend, which is why it's a staple of so just about every pro offense, but we seem particularly vulnerable.
I was glad to see us do some hard traps off the PnR last night (can't remember seeing much of that earlier in the season). If we're gonna switch every time, and I was coaching against us, I'd run the play every time with a big setting the pick for my best playmaker. You wind up with two mismatches and can take your choice of which one to exploit.
IMO, unless you've got a really great defensive team, you've got to switch up your defensive tactics against the PnR -- sometimes hard trap, sometimes show but no switch, sometimes switch. We've been too predictable, switching almost every time.
I don't know why Woody isn't working on this more.
I've been saying this forever. Our bigs are generally very lazy and don't get out far enough. Woodson has acknowledged the problem, relayed it to his players, yet they refuse to adapt. If it were up to me Im either canning Wood for lack of motivation or trading Tyson among others.
the bigs (besides tyson) are lazy and have no lateral quickness. Whenever stat guards a PNR it becomes a 5-4 break. Also our perimeter defenders dont get thru screens. I think theyre excellent at trapping the PNR at times but when they do that, the offense swings the ball and our def ALWAYS gets confused on rotations. Trapping simply leaves shooters WIDE open.
they need someone to at least SEAL OFF the penetration if theyre not gonna trap. That requires lateral quickness and effort

Tyson is included into the laziness too, sorry. He does not go all out every game. Maybe that is lack of subs but even when he had a sub he was up and down. He has been better since the all-star break though. Also, I like what Kmart was doing. He was hedging hard and trapping hard which created some TOs. Hopefully the effort continues.

quit playing favorites. Tyson is just as guilty as anyone. Good defenses can trap and rotate and the opposing team is left with a contested jumper. They were doing this at the start of the season. Most teams get the screeners defender to show on the pick to make the pg hesitate or pick up his dribble. We don't close off anything when Tyson, Amare, or Melo are all 5-10 feet back and then either the pg penetrates or they switch and leave a mismatch.
hey its not about playing favorites. While I admit his defense has regressed this yr, he still plays the PNR relatively well.

Yep he got right up on the perimeter player and didnt allow any breathing room. Loved it!

No he doesn't. Hell, Amare's switching is better than Tyson just standing there. Although Tyson did actually play the PnR good for about a quarter against GS til he felt like doing nothing again...

Watch this video, then you can compare to what Tyson does, and see how terrible his PnR defense has been.
Tyson likes to hang back. And when he does that, Felton can't recover. They get a good 2 man game going.

The man defending Amare: That's the position you'll usually see Tyson in.
Pick and roll defense is key to being a good defense, and Tyson is killing us.
@tj23 ..i dont have the tapes of every single game and im not denying youre valid points. I just remember last game when they employed the tyson trap on curry, he was smothered and had to pass out of the double team. and from what i recall hes excellent at smothering the PNR. i feel that he has regressed in his blocking or at least blocking attempts...i feel like he doesnt even try anymore. I CANT TAKE Amare seriously on defense. Dude is absolutely lost and confused on defense. In his one-on-one defense he extends his hands too far and gets fouls. hes constantly backdoored and always loses his man. have you noticed that he NEVER looks at the ball. first thing i was taught was "BALL-YOU-MAN" so that you can see the player youre guarding AND the ball. Hes so focused on his man that players climb on his back when they go for a layup

Yeah Amare's d is frustrating to watch. Tyson really stepped it up tonight on D. So did Raymond. They are realizing they need to fix these issues.
Against GS they trapped Curry a couple times then went away from it. Gotta play D ALL the time. Plus when you trap you still have to get back. Tyson looks lost at times like he doesn't know where to run back to...
When I watched the LA Clippers play the Indiana Pacers, I watched the Pacers pick and roll but the Clippers had players who
MOVED THEIR FEET that nullified the pick and roll on more than one occasion.
So to successfully defend the pick and roll , the players must move their feet laterally or they will be defeated all the time.
Maybe you guys don't know anyone that's 7 feet tall. Those tall people are never that fast, and if they are, they will be too tired by half time. This is not Tyson's fault, for god's sake, he was defensive player of the year last year. The problem is our team defense has come to a communication problem. I noticed ever since Amar'e came back into rotation. Is it his fault? Well, he's never known to do much defense, plus the addition probably confused the players. It takes time to adapt. Just look at the Lakers. They got tons of talents and superstars, but it's not together yet. Just look at our team as well.
@JamesLin ...THAT is why Tyson is a great defensive player. If you notice he doesnt block many shots...his biggest asset is that hes a big man who destroys picknrolls with his lateral quickness (Dwight could do the same when hes healthy)
I'm not an expert and I haven't looked closely at game tape but I'm fairly certain that Tyson Chandler is the least of our worries on defense...
because we have chocolate boy on defense.
Tyson has been disappointment much of the year defensively especially coming off being the DPOY

who is this chocolate boy??

really?????
It's called playing on a string...it's not about individually stopping your man. You have to blow up the pick n roll before it gets started. This is fundamental shit here. I don't know how to make the point any further lol. I'm just gonna be blunt. Sorry to say but some of you guys are clueless...
