Knicks · Why oh why did the Knicks trade Lin away? (page 8)

Bottom line is that the Knicks felt they could get comparable production for less money. Looking at the above it looks like they were right...just like I stated when this first went down.

Instead of complaning about people blowing by Felton we would be complaining about people blowing by Lin. Lin will not be worth the $14.8 mil payday he would have received from the Knicks and definately not worth the cap penalties.

Lin's strengths are stealing the ball and rebounding yet is killing Felton in steals by .60 steals per game and crushing Ray Ray on the boards by .40 per game. All for a measly $4,000,000 more per year. Please spare me the "It's Dolans money who cares" crap.

The same way that many here are waiting for Gallo to turn into the 20 PPG Dirk Jr. is the way that many will be waiting for Lin to turn into CP3 junior. Of course by then we'll have 80,000 threads about this which may surpass the amount of Melo trade threads during the same time period.

Oh yeah Lin wasn't traded....brilliant thread.

Watch them play, don't look at the Stats. Lin is much better, much smarter and basically better in all aspects. Lin could have been our number two, Felton has repeatedly failed at that.

Whatch them play? Why would I CHOOSE to watch a Rockets game? With the little time I have I prefer to watch the team that I root for. If given all the free time time in the world to watch NBA games at my whim the Rockets would be uber low on my list.

I'm not saying that Lin is not a good player but I am saying that he is not the difference maker. If he indeed PROVES to be an all star player capable of being a #2 I'm gladly admit that I was wrong. It certainly is not this year.

It is fun to watch other players play. It gives perspective as well.

You can't compare players with just stats. I think you know that. Yes, it is a gauge of sorts.

Lin is a special player, was and continues to be.

I DO DEEPLY hope we get a great pg. It is probably my favorite position to watch due to the conductor like quality a great pg has. That can reaaly skip the individual stats.

It's absolutely fun to watch other players play...Agreed. Where I disagree is that he is a special player. I think many of lose perspective because of that he did for the team last year and what a great sports story it was. The stats are a guage and nothing really jumps out at me. He has had some amazing games this year but so have other players. I wish him well but don't think we've missed out on much. For all the crap that a lot of GM's get I don't see more than a handfullof undrafted players who went onto All Star careers. Lin may be added to the list but I don't think it will in the first couple of years of his deal.

Imagine if Lin were still with us? Lin loves New York. He loves the Knicks. Imagine Lin and Carmelo together just tearing it up night after night.

Carmelo didn't want to share his toys with lin.... he felt it was "ridiculous" that lin was offered that kind of money... so there you go...

I blame all the parties envolved. If Lin really wanted to be a Knick he would be. If New York really wanted Lin to become a knick he would be here.Lin Really didn't want to come back. If Houston offered Lin 25 million from the jump the knicks would have matched.

The prayers have not be answered. We let a mediocre PG walk and replaced with another mediocre PG. God will bless us with a PG one day but then we'll be asking for a SF, PF, C, or SG.

Carmelo made peace with Lin. The game of basketball is a team sport. It isn't about one players glory above all else. Kobe wouldn't have made it without his teammates. Michael Jordan would not have made it without his teammates.

It is real basic. We never made him an offer and we publicly told him to get an offer. He did and we let him walk. No matter how you slice this, we F'd up and we are apparently paying for it now, especially since Woody won't budge with the starting lineup.

Jeremy Lin makes Mike Woodson's stubborn resemblance to Bobby Knight more of a problem?

Okayfine.

Dude. 3 years at a little over $8M in cap hit. Nowhere near close to Allan territory. Boozer situation also a little off. Cavs did not have any options. Knicks did.

Talking about his second contract with the Rockets - you know, the one they'll have to pay him starting at $15 million a year, because who goes back to their employer when they reduce their annual salary? In year 3 he is making $15 million a year. Who cares about his avewrage salaray on year three?

Completely wrong here. His salary with the Rockets is 8.3M a year (hoopshype has it wrong) for all 3 years. And of course if Lin doesn't live up to his billing after year 3 he is going to have to take a pay cut.

one of the sad aspects of the new cba... having loop holes still to allow teams to beat the gilbert arenas provision. i wouldnt be shocked if the next cba does more to try and close those.

Dude it doesn't allow for teams to beat it...it essentially comes down to how much you value your own assets. We could have kept Lin and there is nothing the Rockets could have done about it. Even if the Rockets went the Full Poison Pill Max mark which they didn't btw. It's not like we didn't have months to prepare to retain Lin.

I don't get why fans are even trying to spin this angle, if Dolan would have ran things like he did in the past...

im not talking specifically about lin in my prior response, just mentioning there are still loopholes.

http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q44
There are several situations where a team still might be unable to match an offer sheet:

If the player is a Non-Bird free agent, the team only has the Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, and the offer sheet is higher or for more years than allowed by the Taxpayer Mid-Level exception.
If the player is a Non-Bird free agent and the team already used their Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception to sign another player.
If the player is a Non-Bird or Early Bird free agent with three years in the league (this rule applies only to players with one or two years in the league).
If a team has two Non-Bird free agents with one or two years in the league. They can use their Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception to keep one of them, but would lose the other.

knicks fo seems to have concluded that lin was not going to be worth the tax hit. dunno what the thought process was there to conclude that given he would have expired when most of the long term contracts went. will be and would have been paying a tax it seems unless they start selling off parts.
