Knicks · Can copeland be a great 3 option (page 1)

I think he might be able to be a 6th man if he improves on some things. It will be hard to be a 6th man here if Amar'e is healthy next year. Yes, that's a big if but still. Either way If Jr comes back he can move up as a certified starter.

Amare? Healthy? Same sentence?

Yeah, I think Amare's NBA career is over. He might play brief strings of games again but I don't expect more.

Doubt his career is over. Now, him playing the majority of the season, that's another thing.

I really wish he can come back because the man really works hard and is a great character, but if next season he goes through exactly the same and misses all the season, he should really consider retiring.

3 as in SF?

I don't see why not. Gives us more size, and he has the quickness and outside shot to score on most SF's, PF and especially Centers.

With Pablo going down, whats wrong with this lineup?

Felton, Shump, Cope, Melo, Chandler

Melo guards the quick SF and Cope guards the PF, since Cope has slower feet.

gunsnewing @ 4/18/2013 11:23 AM
As ive said in the past cope is the perfect backup for melo because you dont lose much offensively when melo goes to the bench. HThey both score in a variety of ways. Novak is expendable

If cope improves on reb and D he can start one day

But Novak is still a specialist at something. Usually people that specialize in something are not expendable. And now a days, shooting the ball is a lost ark. Everybody is trying to get to the rim and dunk.

Novak is still our best 3pt shooter off the bench. Cope is a better all around scorer. Both have issues on defense. But under Woodson, they will improve on that end and become better all around players. I've already seen a huge improvement in both players.

I also like Flight White, while others don't. So far, he seems like a better option than the new slim down Q. White has proved this season that he can guard Lebron, Pierce types....Q looks even smaller than Shump, which puts him into the undersized SF category.

Flight White is another goon like Q and Shump....with SF size, and shooting range. Cope is too slow to hang with agile SF's, but big enough for the slow foot PF's or Centers....Can he guard Pierce?

gunsnewing @ 4/18/2013 12:01 PM
White finally had a good game taking it to the basket but his shot is still flat as a pancake and he did it against the pathetic hawks 3rd and 4th stringers. They let white drive right to the hole uncontested. Hawks wanted no part of miami in the 2nd rd

I generaly agree with your post, I just wanted to point out that Shump's new haircut can fool the eye when one is looking at player's heights

Shift Du Saturday

Felton - never beautiful, rested and scrappy
Shumpert - at his "natural" off guard position, whatever that means
Copeland - the weapon, pick your poison
Anthony - see above
Chandler - welcome back captain

Earl- picks up Shumpert when needed, highly flammable

gunsnewing @ 4/18/2013 2:33 PM
I agree with that lineup and it may be our best. hopefully they smoke the celtics out of the gates. And this lineup sticks

The only problem with this lineup is that Copeland cannot play like Melo (which he normally does off the bench)....Hold the ball and put his head down on those drives, unless it's wide open off the double from Melo.

Pablo was good at moving the ball, and sometimes Cope will have to do the same. Does he have the IQ to know when to shoot and when to pass? Also, he's going to guard players away from the basket more at SF, so his lateral quickness will be challenged. They will go right at him since he's the weak link and probably guarding either Pierce or Jeff Green.....No pressure!

When (not if) Woody sees this, he usually will pull Cope out quick and put in JR (which I thinks he may pull him too quick), which moves Shump back to SF. Just something to look at during the first game. Against scrappy teams like the Celtics, they are good at bringing ball pressure. Cope is succeptible to turnovers under pressure....But having two PG's helps with our turnovers against ball pressure.

If Cope tries to do too much with the ball, it can hurt our offense. But with him starting, we should be better at rebounding the ball.

Wasn't Shumpert a PG at Georgia Tech?

Eitherway, I like him better at PG or SG.....Don't like him at SF this year, especially since he's still not 100%. I don't think he impacts the game at SF compared to SG. But even when healthly, I rather use him at SG, and surround him with shooters at PG, SF and PF (Felton, Cope, Melo). If you haven't noticed, he's usually the one wide open on his jumpers, along with Chandler. But thats ok, as long as they are impacting our defense.

Agreed no one listens when i say Shump is a playmaker. Great handle and court vision. Doesnt mean we need to start him at pg

I will have him run the team saturday over Felton tho with Prigs right

Knixkik @ 4/18/2013 4:48 PM
I see Copeland becoming a very good long-term 6th man. He can just flat out score and will improve rebounding and defending with experience at the NBA level.

Next year i see Felton, Shumpert, Smith, Melo, and Chandler starting with Copeland playing major minutes off the bench, possibly replacing Smith as 6th man, particularly if Amare is not healthy.

I don't know, man, I was at the game yesterday, and his court vision didn't seem too good. He was passing into Hawks' knees. But I guess Prigs was doing that too... But I'd rather he play SG and let someone else handle the PG.

I was much more interested in his movement off screens than his playmaking ability. He just needs to become a good secondary ball handler and improve his shooting 10 ft and below. Then work on his off ball defense and learn not to foul while defending the ball handler. Some of that will come if his reputation grows as a defender.

I do too. Id only play him at pg over felton. Remember iman has yet to play a full season. He still makes rookie mistakes on both ends. Full camp summerleague will do wonders to his game

If Woodson wants to keep that same three guard pressure and ball movement, just start JR. Seems like a simple fix to me. And the more I think about it, the more I realize this would be the best move for Woody. Keeps whats been working the same....The guards and two bigs.

Especially since Cope has emerged as a consistent scoring threat off the bench, start JR and have Cope as your 6th man. The second unit would be....

BENCH
Kidd
Q
Cope
Novak
Martin
Camby / Barron

STARTERS
Felton
JR
Shump
Melo
Chandler

knicks1248 @ 4/18/2013 11:43 PM
Cope playing the 5 has to be a nightmare for opposing defenses..

He's the reason we didn't really miss tyson, a guy who can put the ball on the floor, shoot a 3, crafty around the basket.

centers are taught to run back on d and protect the paint, but when cope or melo play the 5 its hilarious watching teams defend us
