What da hell does a usage rate hafta do with driving the lane and dunking in someone's grill to send a forceful message in a must-win situation?

Usage rate?

You see a trophy for usage rate anywhere?

The Answer Man most certainly don't

Because he could be playing 34min/gm and have Tyson Chandler usage rate. Tyson dunks on opponents and has a high fg% too, but Tyson is not heavily involved for offense play calls or say gets a green light to do whatever. I don't think Woody has developed Smith one iota, or made him become a better playmaker, or all around team player but Woody has given him near unlimited offensive...."FREEDOM".

Then I want to say that that is your opinion and is probably in the very high minority.

What's the use? (part 2 in a very funky series)

usage rate?

3G4G: (Earl) could be playing 34min/gm and have Tyson Chandler usage rate. Tyson dunks on opponents and has a high fg% too, but Tyson is not heavily involved for offense play calls or say gets a green light to do whatever.

3G4G - stop it, you cracking The Answer Man up. There is a reason Tyson Chandler does not have the proverbial green light. His offensive repertoire is limited to the restricted area.

There's more?

I don't think Woody has developed Smith one iota, or made him become a better playmaker, or all around team player but Woody has given him near unlimited offensive...."FREEDOM".[/i]

3G4G - Did you know that Mike Woodson does not coach the Knicks at all? He is actually sitting near a pool in a villa outside of Montego Bay, while a body double robot, controlled by Mike D'Antoni, barks orders.

"Okay guys, lets go"

Hilarious

You can't pick one random player out of the 400 in the league and infer what another player is worth.

Self-referencing post. The AnswerMan delivers, again.

Smith did not start a game all season. But did you know that Smith played the most minutes of any Knick this season? More than Carmelo Anthony, or Tyson Chandler, or Raymond Felton. That’s 2,678 minutes logged for Smith. Tops on the Knicks, 32nd in the entire league, trailing only starters.

The next player on the league list who wasn’t a full-time starter is J.J. Redick, way down at 60th.

More minutes if given the opportunity to have a high usage rate.....means more than likely higher numbers somewhere. He played 6-7min/gm and shot 3-4fga/gm more compared to his career averages. Math is Math.

Yup. In the last month or so, he had a better stretch than I'm aware of him ever having but that's still a tiny sample, and I haven't looked at his monthly #s closely anyway. Also, you can't place more weight in one month than in the entire season.

Awesome. Great honor for JR.

Just watched a short interview with him on NBATV. Really happy for JR and he looked really proud to have the award with him.

Every time you felt he was reverting back to the JR chucker of old he got his game back on track by mixing in the penetration. Woodson certainly deserves an immense amount of credit for being the first coach to really get through to JR

Stats suggest it had nothing to do with Woody and more so to do with Volume and Smith's natural progression to maturity. He's had better or say far more efficient yrs in Denver. I do feel he was more "timely for us and the stage on which he plays helps tremendously.

and articles suggest that it was Woody who took JR under his wing and has been hands on with him all year. This has been widely written about. Why not just give a coach his due?

Woody deserves some credit but keep in mind J.R. was under Woody last yr too...the guy who was doing things on twitter unprofessionally....also the same guy who said on twitter this yr to an under age girl something about Piping and going at Humphries somehwhat unprofessionally.

I did read an article this yr where J.R. said he doesn't party nearly as much this yr as he did last yr. Not sure if this is Woody getting through to him or a guy who is 27 about to turn 28 having been through some real tough situations causing him to adjust. But hey if you guys feel Woody deserves all the credit for a player shooting 42% and 35%, which are average at best in of themselves go with that. J.R. plays starters minutes and starters usage rate, therefore his numbers stood a chance to look better from an overall output and he's been in more positions to succeed.

Rome wasn't built in 1 day

JR admitted he partied too much last year and stopped this yr

Exactly when trying to figure out which differing opinions are valid I go with the general feel amongst the voters. When it the votes are lopsided you get your answer. When its too close to call there is no sense in arguing. Just agree to disagree. Let the truth play itself out overtime.

In this case, this opinion is certainly in the minority. Therefore barring a rare occasion it is not the correct opinion.

Not just end of season. He had bad stretches but Woodson got him to refocus. He has been great for the majority of the year I'd say about 55 of the 82 games or so

Howard Beck @HowardBeckNYT
JR Smith won Sixth Man with 72 of 121 first-place votes, 484 points. Jamal Crawford (31 1st-place votes) finishes second, w/352 pts. Jarrett Jack was third (14 first-place votes), followed by Kevin Martin (2), Ryan Anderson (1), Andre Miller (0), Jordan Crawford (1).

Landslide

Papabear Says

My congrats to JR Smith you deserve to win. I hope we find a way to keep you. I guess it was a little too much to make this thread a total appreciation thread of what you've done this season.

Woody tries to enforce ball movement. He limits Smith's Isos and makes him pick n roll and if nothing develops he can iso.

Is that you Calicoe?

Congratulations J.R., he could have taken being kept on the bench as a slight, instead J.R. went out and had a career defining season, with hopefully more to come. He definitely earned it.

I give 3G4G props for his persistence in detracting from the Knick organization in whatever manner possible (players, coaches, awards, wins, etc.) at all times despite all facts contrary to his opinion.

LMAO!

There are a lot of things you can point to -- maturity, better shot selection, less late-night clubbing -- to explain J.R. Smith's renaissance in New York this season.

But, sometimes, an explanation is simpler than that. You might think NBA players are concerned solely about winning when they're on the court, or, more cynically, that they're worried mainly about their statistics.

As it turns out, in his five seasons with Denver, Smith sometimes had an agenda that was all his own (courtesy of Newsday):

"I just look at the game totally different," Smith said. "A lot of times, I was trying to score as many points as I could just because I knew that would [tick] George off and do certain things I knew would get him mad. But at the same time, I couldn't look at it that way because I wasn't winning that situation, anyway, which I didn't."

It all makes sense now!

The step-back 3-pointer over two defenders, the permanent green light he gave himself, regardless of the situation in the game ... he was just trolling George Karl!

In contrast, in the same article, Smith's dad called his son's relationship with Mike Woodson a "friend-father-player" one. Woodson has given Smith more slack when it comes to his decision-making on offense, while Smith has returned the favor by doing what the coaching staff wants and trying hard on defense.

As a result, Smith is having the best season of his career, with career highs in points, rebounds, assists and minutes played.

In his ninth season in the NBA, he's finally becoming the player everyone knew he could be. You might wonder, why did it take him so long to figure it out? Well, let's just ask him:

Smith takes some responsibility for what happened with his other coaches. He said he could have done things differently and been who they wanted him to be, but added, "That's just not me."

So in other words he grew up on "his terms" pretty much what I said earlier....

Why are you being obtuse? Since day one of this year Woody has been working on JR. We all just watched the entire season and I distinctly remember Woody being upset with JR not really playing smart and Woody really tore into him about attacking the basket and being smarter with his shot selection. Then we saw a change in JR where he started attacking the basket more often and more successfully with each and every drive. For some reason you must have missed this part of the season when the change happened. This wasn't just about JR wising up, but also about how he finally has figured out how to use his talent in the best way that leads to wins. Woody is the one who gave JR the late game opportunities to build his confidence. Until this year JR hadn't ever really hit any game winners. This was about a player and a coach believing in each other and finding success. JR deserves the award and the credit but with an assist from Woody his coach that set him on the path.

I don't know what your particular issue is, but at least try to be accurate in describing what went on with this player and the coach.

55? No way. That's an example of how much people are affected by recency. Even after the all-star break (after 51 of 82 games), he was still shooting in the upper .300s. It was 2/22 to 4/14 that he played very well. It was a great 7 weeks that I never expected but you can't give more weight to those 7 weeks than the previous 9 years. Fortunately, the NBA won't let Dolan do that since we can pay him much anyway. I might be willing to give him an extra $1 mil per yr than I would have before that 7 weeks but that's the most weight I'd allow 7 weeks to have, and it might be just the fan in me giving it that much weight.

I remember him struggling the first 5 games or so then playing as well as he finished during 18-5. Gonna check game logs to be sure. Maybe not 55 but i feel he was good in about 45-50 which is great coming from a guy whod give you 1 good game a week
