your problem my man - the sport of the argument is the entire reason to post on an internet messageboard about basketball. I certainly don't come here to learn about basketball
I agree with Blue. I'm as guilty as anyone of always trying to win arguments. The problem is that there is no such thing as winning the argument. It's not like there's an objective arbiter of truth who settles the fights. And it's not like the other person ever says, "You're right. I don't know what I was thinking." Even if they did, it doesn't really matter. It's not like you get a big shiny trophy.
since i am a student of the game i post to learn and to test my knowledge of basketball, and by extension, human nature. hence, even though i am competitive, winning an argument is irrelevant. it is rewarding to learn something just as it is gratifying to have my views of the game proven true by events, or have my views defied by those same events.
ultimately, what transpires in the real world-- after an argument has ensued-- proves or disproves ones opinion, and its logical extension, predictive ability. in that sense i suppose posting for me is a competition.
unfortunately most internet posters are too egotistical to acknowledge when they are in error. to be a student of the game the egoism needs to dialed back otherwise learning is impossible.

I've quit some boards before for different reasons. I've usually checked back in though. It's tough to not take a peek after you've invested so much time into something and made a habit of it. But if it don't feel worth it anymore, move on. Do what you gotta do.

Definitely agree. I'm always trying to improve my knowledge whereas it seems most people think they already know everything. But that's how most of the world is. People have strong opinions on everything whether they have any knowledge or not. I definitely don't try to win as many discussions as I used to but sometimes it's hard to not keep trying to force your point across.

before this forum existed, on the ny times forum there were constant arguments about whether the knicks were better with/without ewing with/without jeff van gundy...etc....and this was not just exclusive to the internet...it was happening on sports talk radio too...
it's been part of life for sports fans in nyc at least as far as i've been paying much attention...
even a team like the yankees, with all of their winning, does not silence this constant argument...
it is what it is...

The Sports Talk tribunals hosted by the Pharoahs would debate the chariot races for months at a time. The difference between then and now? Men were men, women were women and both always manned up to the point they NEVER took things personal or held grudges for more than 30 seconds.
At the end of the day, all that mattered was not who won the argument, or lost, it was who had the most elegant orange and blue Marcus Camby Head Crown adorning their royal dome. No one kept score for the debate and there was no gold awarded for the most verbiage.
There were no sombers, homers, pom poms or not quite retired. You participated in the discussion or you watched. There were no trumpets hailing either. The goal was not consensus or majority rule. One man. One opinion.
