Knicks · Which cheap free agents do we target? (page 4)

i mean...at least people are getting a better picture of the predicament the knix are in. if you mention CP3, BJennings, Josh Smith, OJMayo, etc etc its hard to take that seriously when i know we have only $3million and a 24th draft pick to play with. Basically were stuck with the team we have and were hoping to find a diamond in the rough. (now you see why im pessimistic...but i do hope for the best)

Jerryd Bayless alligator arms a guy you hyped was a bust until the Grizzlies decided to play him...

Both jumped from team-to-team

Another player you hyped O.J. Mayo...he's been attempted to be traded several occasions and looks like he may not be brought back by Dallas, they're not 100% sold on him

Another player you used to refer to as James Larden....had you calling him a BEAST once he was traded to Houston....

So you know what you can do right about now....

OJ Mayo and Bayless are role players. Terrence Williams isnt even a role player.

I already said Harden was nice 2 seasons ago when he was breaking down defenders with ease with sick handles. I also already posted that I didnt think Westbrook or Harden would be as good as they are now. I dont pretend Im never wrong man.

Dont get salty cause your boy Terrence Williams who I said was garbage is really garbage.

Knicks would have to sign and trade for guys like Jennings.

As I said if you know what the teams goals are then it makes it easier to come up with trades. Milwaukee is content being the Atlanta Hawks. They trade Tobias Harris and filler for JJ Reddick a free agent.

Milwaukee has 3 free agents in Reddick, Ellis, and Jennings. They aren't bring all those guys back. Milwaukee is also interviewing Larry Drew. Why? They want Josh Smith.

They may be willing to do a sign and trade to get some assets back to entice Josh Smith.

We should target.....

Youth

Earl Clark
Terrence Williams
Cole Aldrich
B.J. Mullens
Anthony Murrow
Dominique Jones
Austin Daye
Brandan Wright
Wesley Johnson
Chase Buddinger
DeJuan Blair
Greg Smith
Nolan Smith

Vets

Corey Brewer
Ton Allen
Andray Blatche
Marco Belli
Teen Wolf
Dorrell Wright
J.J. Redick
Nick Young
Jose Calderon
C.J. Watson
Demarre Carroll
Carlos Delfino
Shaun Livingston
Francisco Garcia
Matt Barnes
Ryan Hollins
Martell Webster

Now some of these guys still may have high price tags but money dries up fast too....so you never know but we need to start with the youth free agents first and foremost combing the whole league until we sign at a minimum 2-3 of them. Some of them I feel will come real cheap as they'll be looking for defined roles and playing time possibly more than money.

Who do YOU think we should get? You named mostly scrubs.

Terrence Williams is GARBAGE.

Completely incorrect. T-Will's actually a nice talent - even showed it in flashes in the Boston series when Doc called his number. One of the better names on 3G4G's list (good list btw). If this kid ever went to a situation where he got some playing time he could be an impact player. Dude's 6'6", strong/tough, can handle and pass it and hits the glass extremely well for a 2, good defender, has enough one on one skills to go get his own shot, etc...Very nice player coming out of Louisville.

Dominique Jones is a similar player to T-Will - 6'5" wing that's a good scorer and very good passer for a 2G. Just didn't work out for him in Dallas for whatever reason. That kid still has a pretty bright future imo. Another good call by 3G4G.

I agree, I like T-will, versatile, athletic, has size, and still has a lot of potential. I agree 3g has a pretty good list..

are all worthy of consideration but do the knicks have any money to pay them?

Andre Blatche would be a very good pickup. I saw a enough of him to offer a 3 years 5 million deal. His skill level is very good for a 7ft player.
callmened @ 5/19/2013 6:57 PM
@vmart...the most we can offer a free agent is 3mill..so i doubt well get bellinart, allen, blatche or any of the guys u mentioned

that's only id they can resign Cope to a low deal if the can't the mMLE will go to retain Cope. If a team offers him a dollar more than 3 mill the knicks don't have the money to match as things stands right now. That doesn't mean Cope will sign a deal with another team if it is that close. I pretty sure NY can say or do something to keep Cope if a few hundred thousand dollars are all that separates the two teams. The key is to jump on it quick and get him sign early before a team gets the chance to talk to him.

I thought if Copeland wanted a contract over $3M we wouldn't be able to sign him at all?

NardDogNation @ 5/19/2013 10:24 PM
Has anyone mentioned Martell Webster? He should've been signed this offseason. Now, he'll probably cost us an arm and a leg.

Either way, I still think that the problem that is plaguing the Knicks is the absence of a sidekick/peer with Melo. In a league moving away from a one star model to a multi-star model, we need another guy that can be "the man" with Melo. It is for that reason that I was a big proponent of us pursuing James Harden this past offseason by using Jeremy Lin and Iman Shumpert as bait in a 3 team trade. I had no idea that Harden could be as good as he turned out to be but knew he could be the Hawks version of Joe Johnson, which works well since we don't have a real PG that is a legitimate starter. Unfortunately, no "cheap free agents" are going to substitute for that so we need to figure how to make a major move and then go from there. Rajon Rondo on deck!

could we get matt barnes for the 3mil mle?

We could probably get him for less. He's not going going to get his much deserved payday for the same reason he's never gotten it in the past. That attitude of his can be highly abrasive and wears thin on his opponent and team officials alike.

callmened @ 5/19/2013 10:55 PM
- were 20mill over the cap, so we cant sign any big free agents
- we only have one 3mill midlevel exception
- here are a list of players that (i think) would sign in the 1-3mil range

PG AJ price/jose calderon
SG gary neal/randy foye
SF martell webster/anthony tolivver/matt barnes/dorell wright
PF dante cunningham/ivan johnson/Dejuan blair
C Sam dalembert

callmened @ 5/19/2013 11:06 PM
the original plan was to have the 1-2 punch of amare and melo...we were highly invested in this combo...but no one knew that amare's knees were THIS BAD! so now we have to wait til their contracts expire to get under the cap. were basically stuck until 2015-16 ...unless one of three things happen:

- we trade tyson for some key role player.
- Melo opts out of his contract at the end of next yr (like JR will do this summer)
- Amare gets traded at the end of next yr since hell be a valuable expiring contract

If we resign JR, do we have to use the $3 MMLE towards it?

Seems weird he always seems to play well, but never gets re-signed. Even when he played for us, we ended up cutting him when he was playing pretty well for us. You might get him for the minimum. We could have had him for the minimum this year (he wanted to sign with us), but we didn't- big mistake.

I can't believe Tony Allen is payed so little- I bitterly regret that we didn't sign him when he left the Celtics- an absolute bargain. Great, great player to have on your team. He must be due a pay day this offseason.

No to Redick- overrated and said he didn't like NY and didn't want to get traded here (how did he find the Bucks, I wonder)

callmened @ 5/20/2013 11:45 AM
no we dont have to use the 3mill MLE on JR...we have his birds rights so were allowed to pay him 5mill (even though were over the cap) and KEEP him if he wants to stay
BRIGGS @ 5/20/2013 11:48 AM
I would say Blatche Kaman or Dalembart unless someone gets amnestied.

Thanks! In what situation do you have to dip into the MLE? Is it early bird rights? Would it apply for Priggs and Cope? I seem to remember before Lin and Novak got some ruling, it was looking like we'd have to use the MLE to re-sign them.

We need High BB IQ, SOLID DEF *especially players that can defend their own positions* , with good athleticism/speed/size depending on the positions
We need YOUNG players in every position that can contribute and still develop and NOT ALL aged veterans

Positions needed

Young PG

that could PENETRATE, DEFEND THE PG POSITION, Hit a Wide open 3pointer, facilitate, and be able to play on and off the ball

AJ Price for vet min, many PG's in draft, some quality backups as a stoppage like Patty Mills/Gary Neal, would love Jarret Jack but I don't see it happening unless we are trading Tyson CHandler to go under tax threshold, and getting a huge trade exemption *would greatly help if we can get multiple 2nd round picks because I don't see anyone giving a high 1st round pick for him at his salary*

Nate Robinson, JJ Barea or Ridnour for a salary dump for Twolves *might not require a 2nd round pick or asset*, Jannero Pargo, Randy Foye, Livingston

a couple of G/F's, depending on if we can keep JR Smith for the 5m we can offer *which would likely require use to use a guaranteed roster spot for his brother, Chris Wright

G/F, SF, SF/PF

Brandon Rush, I can see him playing the more efficient JR Smith role without some of his abilities *while coming back from his ACL surgery he has a player option for 1 season at 4m*
With Jack being their priority, they would need to find ways to get under the tax threshold as a small market team, however, I am not sure if he will require an asset like a 2nd round pick to do so
If so, We could use all of our unguaranteed 2nd year deals with Brewer's trade exemption to acquire him
In a back up role in a little over 26 minutes, he average nearly 50 FG%, 1.5 3pter's made at 45%, 4.5 REB, .5 steals with 1 block, 1 TO and 1 ASS, to go with good 1v1 DEF and TEAM DEF as well
Yes, he is a risk with his injury to roll a dice on but at the price and a 1 year deal it would be affordable and worthy of risk/reward

Tony Allen
Lance Stephenson *RFA*
Webster
Alan Anderson
Ginobli *know he is injured prone and might not be cheap*

Belineli *not exactly the 2 way player we need but still a shooter*

This draft is not GREAT in terms of having a "ALL STAR" but there are many solid players and is deep in that area some that can contribute right away and some with high ceilings
We should be looking to retool with players that go undrafted or try to get multiple 2nd round picks to use to develop, including that kid from Farmingdale as a PF/C but will take time to fill out develop, Ryan Kelly, Euro Westbrook, Jack Cooley

Would love to trade Tyson Chandler to Portland, especially if we can get their 1st round pick, but I would happy with multiple 2nd round picks, and the 10m - 14m trade exemption, while we could also gain the 5m MLE, bi annual exemption at 2m, in the process

Keeping Kmart at a low salary, the Bi Annual exemption at the most,
Copeland, would likely cost anywhere from 2-5m for his skillset at PF/C and would not be surprised if he gets a Laundry Fields *slightly less* type contract just to NY seriously reconsider about the 3rd year consequences because of the 2015 FA pool

Last season, there were plenty of vet min players like Nate, Webster, Blatche, Barnes, Copeland, Priggs, Kmart, Birdman, Chris Johnson *Twolves*, Ryan Hollins etc
I think there will again be players that will out produce their vet min deals, it is if we would again be able to find them....

Would love to add an offensive coach like Brian Shaw that could give some input on how to create a philosophy that could allow Melo and the supporting cast to consistently be involved and attack an opponents DEF as a whole vs the Iso plays that Woodson gives too much freedom to both Melo/JR to get the role players in positions to succeed, be involved, and move without the ball

another bump of FA's i wanted
