JR is not the problem...JR is not a second option and we are trying to make him into one because of Amare and Chandler's failures...U don't get second options at 5 mil per or 2.5 per...It's like asking JCraw to be the second option on the Clippers...If anything, JR has outperformed his contract..

It's not official yet. Chris signed with CAA to make things easier, and pretty much tweeted what his brother's intentions will be:
"I will be back with my big brother @TheRealJRSmith ... Will be a blessing to wear my Knicks uniform."
I'd be very surprised if some team outbids the $5mill per considering what JR has done the last few weeks. So once JR opts out, it should be a forgone conclusion he and his brother should be in a Knicks uniform for the next few years.
All signings will be official at the start of free agency, in July.

JR at 5M is a good deal. When he plays like he did in the latter half of the playoffs you need 1) A player that can fill in adequately and 2) A Coach that is willing to pull him.

Holy shit, I just realized something! Couldn't the league look at this as circumvention of the salary cap? That would mean their contracts are voided, we wouldn't be allowed to sign either one, and we'd be forfeiting draft picks. If Chris Smith had kept his fucking mouth shut I wouldn't be worried but now? Now there's a little voice in the back of my head saying we're about the get bent over.

LOL. How are they going to prove ANYTHING. This is why they all have the SAME agent. I doubt Knicks management is making any promises. They arent stupid.

JR Smith is going to be retained for 5 million because at 5 million per he has value. Just like Felton at 4 million has value.

This kind of deal doesn't hurt the Knicks. The Knicks are not in a position to let good talent walk.

This team wasn't that far away IMO. We simply need to bulk up and add some young legs. People are hating on Chris Smith but we lived with Tony Douglas and Kidd and I can't imagine anyone being worse than those guys in the postseason.
5M for JR is a deal, despite the fact that he is a colossal headcase. Would love if there was someone better out there at that bargain price but I highly doubt there is.
I have no idea whether Chris Smith sucks or not, haven't seen enough of him to judge. But I can only hope he's more mature than his big brother.

$5mm is a good deal. I don't care if we give his brother a shot in camp, I just don't want to waste a roster spot on him. Chris is not a PG....he can shoot a little, but he is pretty marginal.
This smells of a pre arranged deal. I hope were not giving up 3 # 1 picks for Chris and JR Smith if the NBA looks into it. And thats what it is--we made a deal with the Smith's so that we can loophole the CBA and pay JR more. The funny part is--his value dropped like a rock--we couldve had him for less. I've never seen a player rise and drop in value so much so fast. This is why we will never win a championship by the way--were going all out to sign a guy who helped lose the playoffs for us. I've heard of giving a friend or a sibling a scholarship in college--this is likely the first time a brother who does not deserve to be on this roster--who seem slike a lowlife--is going to be on the team simply to get JR more. it does sound like a pre-arranged deal but i think this happens all the time though.

Come on. JR is not the reason we lost to the Pacers. Sheed Wallace, Camby, Amare,Thomas,and a sick Tyson Chandler is the reason why we lost. We had no bigs. They were dead man walking. If they were healthy we would have won hands down.

Happens more than you think- not so much signing family members, but teams have signed players just because they're friends with another player they're trying to appease.
Bottom line is, if you don't re-sign JR, you'd then have to replace him AND upgrade the team with only $3mil MMLE and veteran minimum contracts. Good luck with that!
