Knicks · Amar'e to work with Olajuwon again this summer (page 2)

93BUICK @ 5/27/2013 10:07 PM
He wants to spend his own money getting better- I think it's a good idea- I know it's unrealistic to count on him but his effort and conditioning are consistent- and he's come back from a lot- He's due for a healthy year-
nyshakespeare @ 5/27/2013 10:53 PM
Both Tyson & Amare need to go to Olajuwon this summer.
They also need to go the Clyde Frazier route and take
up yoga to help with their back problems.
Clean @ 5/28/2013 1:02 AM
Things Amare needs to work on in the post.
1. Avoid tunnel vision when you get it in the post.
2. Learn to spot where the double team is coming from.
3. Learn to pass out of the double team.
4. PLEASE!! stop spinning into the double teams!
yellowboy90 @ 5/28/2013 1:11 AM
Working with Hakeem is not about imitating the moves Hakeem did its about growing your technique and learning the nuances of posting which Amar'e did. He was the number 1 post scorer according to synergy I believe. His efficiency was outrageous while his shot chart changed dramatically. The only thing that held Amar'e back was health.
Nalod @ 5/28/2013 7:12 AM

Amare is (at least publicly) letting the world know he is willing to spend his money on getting a tutor.

I doubt Hakeem is "Learn to do it like me and I teach you nothing else"!

Maybe he is learning how to pass it out of the post when doubled?

In the videos he seemed to be learning to create space to shoot the short jumper as well.

fundamentals are essential for an aging player when they lose some quickness.

CHandler, Melo, imagine Shump with a post game... that's all I got

Wazup webheads, been on a working Vacation in Gotham (painted my sisters house) and decided to stay away after the loss knowing this board would be going bonkers. Now, on to the topic

Chandler (unless I'm mistaken) did workout with Hakeem when he came to the garden. Worked with Chandler & Melo. Seeing Chandler, you have to wonder WHAT he actually took away from the time spent. Dude looked like a boy among men out there this post-season.

Shump, dude needs to learn to make better decisions going to the basket. Too often he'd get to the rim and then suddenly the light bulb would go out. He needs to work on finishing at the rim.

The person I really want to see working with Hakeem is Kenyon Martin. If he remains I'd want him to be more than just and energy guy willing to give that hard foul.

I see Hakeem going for off-season #2 of ripoffs... wonder if he's gonna get McGee to squander some of his financial inheritance.

Someone should teach Amar'e how to rebound/box out/position D/block shots.

unfortunately I don't know IF than can actually be tough. You show and teach these things through practice and watching tape but, if the player doesn't have the drive or hunger it likely won't happen. These guys hear the knocks against them and still don't change so, I don't Hake or anyone except a non-nonsense coach can change.

We discussed this a few days ago, after olympics Tyson was nursing his dislocated finger and did charity work so he never got with Hakeem.

Shump don't need to post just yet, he needs to be the designated driver for Ray and Kidd in the Hamptons.

My take is Tyson got weak from flu and likley not in top condition nursing his neck.

Before most go off on the medical staff for not involving us in the day to day, don't be surprised if he has surgery and hope its not fusion or disc replacement, just to "clean it up". He has a bit of NBA miles on him so expect this to happen.

With a bad neck don't expect him to hit the weights this summer.

Like most of us, I'd like to see him use some of that offense to open things up a bit.

Make no mistake, Knicks ran into a team that has a center that used the series as his "coming out party" and has made notice he is a max type player and is playing like it! Tyson is a good defensive center, Hibbert is deserving of the respect he is earning and tyson was just not at the top of his game.

Outside of melo, Indy was just better in many ways.

I hope Olajuwon uses stronger magic this year.

Good post, I believe this is more on the coach than the player themselves though
Problem is, our players don't know how to play off one another OFF THE BALL, and simply stand around too much while not exhausting the DEF at all to drain our opponents energy/stamina
Like JR and Melo, the ball is in their hand majority of the time, but the other players on the court, DO NOT KNOW, if JR/MELO will try to score or facilitate

penetrate to score, penetrate to draw more defenders to him *which could lead to open shots if our players moved more together*
ATTACKING the opponents DEFENSE to make them burn their energy so they will get tired in the 4th quarter without the legs needed to hit a jump shot
ALL WHILE DOING IT TOGETHER WITH 5 of our players attacking as one

When JR was playing well in the late season run, he was constantly penetrating, and at first he would just simply penetrate to draw defenders over while his team mates knew he was consistently looking to repeat this as they would look to get open for a shot as well as anticipate the other options were like find the angle to hit the open man or our better shooter with the open shot
He was doing less of the dribble, dribble, kill 12 seconds of shot clock, then step back jumper, and even less 3point attempts
I am not sure if he realized by doing that, he was making himself harder to read and defend because he wasn't constantly looking to score and as his team mates were also hitting the open shots by finding the open man, sometimes he got the assist, sometimes he doesn't BUT NONE OF THAT SHOULD MATTER
This allow's our team/offense/players, especially role players, to get in rhythm and feeling a part of the offense vs just isolating or in a spread out offense that allowed the DEFENSE to rest instead of burning energy/stamina

So essentially Amare must learn to anticipate his ability to post up and allow his team to play off it, instead of always trying to force the issue, especially when Chandler is in the game with him because he is usually not being defended while his man his able to stop him from being a scoring threat and DEFEND another player or the paint which makes it harder for Amare
Most of his Amare's success in the post plays came the left side of the court from just a few simple philosophies in anticipating what his options are with counter's and ability to either do a jump hook/finish going right or do a drop step/spin move to the basket
Mixing this up with scoring and getting team mates wide open shots is more important than achieving "STAT'S" or numbers

RonRon @ 5/28/2013 5:12 PM
As a team, starting with our "All Star's" they must lead by example
Making the consistent correct plays and building on a philosophy on how a team should play together cohesively is much more important than making a basket
Things that the entire team must realize and build on....

In a step to being a better player all round player and more importantly, making his team mates better, these are some of the things he must develop
Carmelo Anthony must learn how to play on and off these 2 as well, as developing his ability to facilitate for the team so they can play off his abilities as well

There is quite a lot of other things he must do to improve and scoring is not one of them, being more efficient is much more important, with 1v1 DEFENSE on SF's and PF's
He must realize the difference and how to defending them
With JJ he often used his length/mobility to alter a shot or sacrifice his body for a charge
Melo is not a shot blocker, so if has to sacrifice his body for charges by getting to the spot the opponent often tries to do with our weakness in shot blocking

As much as some poster's might not like how and what DK7TH says about CA, he says a lot of things that are correct about him
Now, some of these things can be corrected, and some are just bad habits, but he must realize it and accept it
If your shot is not falling and his arm is hurting, why feel the need to take more shots and be the hero?
Like someone else said, Anthony should read the book "THE ART of War" by Sun Szu, strategy tactic's that are still studied today by the military all over the world
Although the book was written BC, the philosophy can be applied to life things in life and life itself
Below is a link, that translate's The Art of War to the NBA, if someone wants to tweet CA on twitter

I agree, his jump shot would bring out another rebounder away from the basket.

He has no lift when guys hanging on him, he gets his shot blocked regularly underneath the basket.Amare post play should be used like Birdman slashing to the goal unguarded and follow ups.

I never heard how LaMarcus Aldridge developed his post game

I never heard how Zach Randolph developed his touch around the rim

I never heard how David West developed his post play besides spending the off-season boxing

I never heard how Marc Gasol developed his all around big man play

I never heard how Dirk developed his game besides working with his long tim shooting coach from Germany

I never heard how Roy Hibbert worked on his interior game but I did hear his wrist injury played an impact on him adjusting his game on a personal level

Just look at the market , then you know why we don't hear about it.

Also those guys went to school or played overseas that's when they worked on their post game.

Amare came straight from highschool and was more athletic than everybody else.

this is good especially considering his limited minutes. The moves he has learned require less athleticism than he was famous for using in the past. It starts him closer to the rim, requires less strain than when he used to just barrel into the post and the efficiency allows him to get into his offense quickly.

The less he has to do, the better off we are.

There are many big men who have had success late in their careers by modifying their style into something less athletic and more effective- Amare is ambitous enough - I hope it works out for him and us
