The problem is JR is part of the supporting cast.

Agreed; Melo should have been looking to get others more involved but he either can't or doesn't want to.

he can't. he isn't a very good basketball player.

So you want him to be a point forward?

Makes no sense. I thought it was the PG's job to get others more involved?

we had one of those but he was sent packing because melo couldn't, wouldn't, or didn't like playing with him.

Your asking Melo to defer to his teammates and his teammates are being told by the coach to get the ball to Melo.

the coach is not very good. he's afraid of melo and he fired his agent to accomodate the owner.

He had a coach who wanted him to play the right way and he refused to give it a fair shot. That doesn't excuse Melo. It's part of the problem.

AnubisADL wrote:So you want him to be a point forward?

Point forward? No. You see no middle ground between ball-stopper and point forward or are you just being obtuse?

i vote obtuse LOL.

SupremeCommander @ 5/30/2013 3:48 PM
in fairness, even without Westbrook, Durant's supporting cast was better. The only supporting cast guy who could hit a shot was Copeland, and he was stapled to the bench. KMart was shooting 15 footers, Chandler wouldn't pick and roll, Felton started stron only to crash and burn, and Jason Kidd beat that backboard with a brick like he did his ex wife after a night of binge drinking

but I'm not trying to deny that Durant is the superior talent. his ceiling is a lot higher than I thought it was, even though I thought it was quite high

Yet Melo's supporting cast shot a higher percentage than Durant's did.

if you want to pick a bone with how the offense structured, I'll buy that. I have no idea where to find this data but I'm willing to bet the Knicks supporting cast shot a higher percentage of jump shots off of Melo than OKC's supporting cast did off of Durant. I'm not arguing that Melo did all he could because I don't think he did

I'm just not going to fault Melo for the assist margin as much as I'm going to credit Durant.

You should do both. On the one hand, it wouldn't surprise me if Melo set or came close to an NBA historical record for most shot attempts and fewest assists. On the other, Durant is one of the best play-makers in the game.

You think thats why we iso so much? Was Woodson afraid of Joe Johnson too?
callmened @ 5/30/2013 7:01 PM
Why are we talking about Melo's passing? Hes not a point guard or point forward. Hes a Scorer and last yr he was the best AT it. I think the focus should be providing him with a PG who can creator for others or having players who can create for themselves. Melo isnt a creator nor should he be.

He was asked to play point forward by the coach you claim wanted him to play the right way.

D'Antoni's insatiable appetite for small ball was so addictive, he felt no compunction about minimizing the impact of two stars owed more than $168 million combined in favor of a point guard making less than $1 million. In favor of a system that allowed unknowns to jack up one 3-pointer after another, barely running an offense in the process.

Contrary to popular belief, acrimony is not what plagued Melo's relationship with D'Antoni or caused Stoudemire's growing frustration. No one disliked D'Antoni. No one thought he was a bad person. It's just that some Knicks thought D'Antoni's system was an exercise in futility.

The D'Antoni detractors felt the Knicks' defense was porous at times not because they couldn't play it, but because they jacked up shots too quickly, too unexpectedly, preventing their defense from getting back and getting set. Then there was Melo being forced to play the point when he didn't want to. Stoudemire being forced to accept the role as a third wheel -- forced to watch Melo head to All-Star weekend while he sat home with everyone questioning whether he'd lost his skills -- was particularly piercing to the Knicks' $100 million power forward.

Did MDA use the term point forward or is that just some random writer's interpretation? And what exactly does he mean by "point forward" anyway? I'm thinking of point forward as the role Durant had where he's responsible for running the offense and getting around 7 assists a game. If it just means that they guy tries to create high quality shots both for himself and others (like most high-scoring wing players do), then that's another story.
RonRon @ 5/30/2013 10:41 PM
Watching that clip of Melo with Dantoni, was probably one of the rare times MELO gave the attempt to play OFF THE BALL
MOVING WITHOUT THE BALL, instead of always only trying to get the ball extending himself out to the 3point line to get it

I don't remember the last time outside of the OKC game that Melo gave the effort to fight for position for rebounds for his team mates
Instead of always exerting energy on getting the ball and dancing with it for poor shots

In about 5 - 6 weeks JR Smith will resign with the Knicks. This team will change a little but not much. I don't blame JR for us loosing I blame the coach. Woody has just one more chance to take us to the finals and if he fails you will see Patrick Ewing being the next head coach of the Knicks. We need to get Novak up off his ass and learn how to go to the basket and shoot off the dribble. No more standing in the corner waiting for a pass. Chandler as big as he is needs to learn how to shoot around the rim like a hook shot or a 10 foot jump shot. Damn he is as bad as fish lipps. Melo won the scoring title so scoring won't be as important as it was and when he resigns he won't max out he will sign for less money in order to get another good player in here. Amare is killing us. I would sign Bynum for one year with an option. Let the doctors check him out. If he can't play our low offer won't hurt us If he can play we will have a post player.

Bonn 1997 wants Melo to be a point guard he would be happy if Melo took no shots and we lost the game. Some people think loosing is good as long as you play the game the way they want it played.
Look Melo is a scorer thats what he does, thats what he is paid to do. He brought us out of 13 years of hell to the second round of the playoffs.
