riddle me this:
if your friend decides to change careers, your friend is maybe 34 years old, and then you can say two things to your friend:
1. "you will do good in your future, i am happy that you are following your heart",
or,
2. "it will be very difficult for you!"
if you say the first thing, you are a confident man that genuinely wants good for your friend and all of humanity,
if you say the second thing, you are a HATERRRR,
Ewing's quote was (as far as I can tell): "I was very surprised they gave it to him so early. I wish him well and nothing but success . . . I was very shocked.” He might have been a bit nicer or something but, I dunno, I was surprised Kidd got the job and I don't think it will be easy. No hating, as far as I see.
Pat Jr was out of line. Big Pat was a bit short and looked stupid with his quote.
Patrick was a selfish player most of his career. Thats ok, players are motivated by different things and how they are driven. Kidd played a different position and saw the game differently.
Pat comes off looking sour.
I would say former NBA players said the same thing about Mark Jackson but didn't have the NY media in their face TO QUOTE THEM.
I read the espn article and didnt see anything wrong with the quotes from Ewing. Two things stood out , he said it is hard to separate yourself from the players and that Mjax was successful because he has the gift of gab and can hold an audience. Vecessey was on the Fan last night and was very negative about the Kidd hire. One thing vecessey said was that Kidd is quiet and led with his play.
I think that Ewing's gripe is legitimate. Coaches hardly get hired off of merit but based on connections and reputation. Its exactly how a guy like Vinny Del Negro always has a job despite constantly underachieving. IMO, that guy is one of the worst X's and O's coach I have ever seen and yet the Celtics are reportedly interested in hiring him if Doc bolts. Pat doesn't strike me as a cerebral guy but if Del Negro is deemed a "capable" anything, Pat should more than qualify.

Ewing sounded bitter and hollow because Kidd just did what he has been trying to do himself for the last 6 years and hasn't even whiffed success. But instead of showing maturity he let the bitterness come out in his quote.
When you say you are surprised someone got the job it usually implied you think that person does not deserve the job. If he had landed a head coaching job when he started trying - do you think his acceptance speech would be: I am surprised I got the job, it will be very difficult? Seriously???
