Knicks · Teams hoping to make big splash in Free Agency coming up short (page 1)

This is why you have to sometimes trade for guys you want.

The Clippers have bent over backwards to keep Paul and it appears they have succeeded.

The Lakers will likely do the same to keep Howard.

I suppose teams vying for Howard could get Josh Smith at the max as a consolation prize.

I expect Josh Smith, Brandon Jennings, and Andre Igoudala to get seriously paid this summer.

JR Smith might get paid too.

Has Howard indicated he might stay? I think he is the only guy that would walk and give up the 25 mil extra to stay in LA because his situation is so bad
Knixkik @ 6/24/2013 10:21 AM
Yeah, as the years pass, less and less very good players will be available via free agency. If they want to leave bad enough, they will work out a trade.

The new cba makes it very hard for star players to leave. Last year it was reported DWill would have left 25 mil on the table if he left the Nets. I believe I read somewhere that the amount this year is almost 30 mil that a star player gives up if he leaves and doesn't get the 5th year max.
3G4G @ 6/24/2013 10:52 AM
CP3 was never really a true threat to leave, he just had a ton of leverage. Howard OTOH is a different story. As far as free agents and the Free Agency market it's never about 1 or 2 guys....

There are still players like...

Josh Smith
Andre Iguodala
Andrew Bynum
Al Jefferson
Paul Milsap
Brandon Jennings
Kevin Martin
David West
Lamar Odom
Monta Ellis
O.J. Mayo
Jarret Jack
Chauncey Billups
J.J. Hickson
J.J. Redick
Kyle Korver
Andrey Blantche
Toney Allen
Matt Barnes
Mike Dunleavy
Mo Williams
Nate Robsinson
Carl Landry
Nick Young
Corey Brewer
Earl Clark
J.R. Smith
D.J. Augustin
Devin Harris
Dorrell Wright
Tyreke Evans
Chris Andersen
Martell Webster
Dejaun Blair
Wesley Johnson
Al Forqua Aminu
Anthony Murrow
Greg Oden

Then possible others if they decide to Opt out

Trevor Ariza
Emeka Jokafor
Mareese Speights
Shawn Marion
Jerryd Bayless
Ben Gordon

If most of these guys land on any prominent team in the league, it could spell problems depending where they end up. Some guys will stay with same team out of loyalty and money but I see lots of chances for teams NOT STRIKING OUT IN FREE AGENCY

Can't tunnel vision Free Agency for CP3 and D-12 only, not surprised though, considering OP.

Teams aren't trading lottery picks and players for the chance to overpay for Josh Smith and Andre Igoudala man.

Of course their are some solid players to be had but the prize was Paul or Howard.

Agree. Houston with Robinson and Dallas with the 13th and Marion are definitely going for it with Howard.

Just admit you're wrong and if teams were attempting to do a Carmelo type deal for either of them, then they would have struck out(even if landing them) making your initial premise comical.

Teams won't have to sacrifice much in order to land(SIGNIFICANT) Free Agents this summer and my list blew your assessment to smithereens.

Your list doesnt mean anything.

Teams want DIFFERENCE MAKERS.

Milsap and Jefferson are role players. They put up solid stats on losing teams.

Josh Smith wants the max and Igoudala wants that last big pay day.

I agree about teams wanting difference makers and Howard and Paul are the two guys this year that have the biggest impact on whatever franchise they end up with. I don't think Iggy expects a huge deal. I think he wants years and security in Denver. That may have changed with all their shake ups. Del Negro is interviewing for their coaching vacancy.

exactly, really the OP kind of backed himself into a corner here... There is a good amount of talent in free agency and I think some teams are going to land some players at real good prices..

milsap and jefferson depending on the team, can be difference makers... I am sure last year, no one would have considered paul George or Hibbert Difference makers...

josh smith may want the max, but if no team is willing to pay max.. josh isn't getting max... but if a team feels they need a josh smith and decides to overpay, how is that any different from what we did with amare, chandler and carmelo?

I think there will be bargains. The CBA is so restrictive for teams that big money may not be available for those second tier guys. However, I do think to get a franchise changer like Paul or Howard you have to make a trade.

Okay If Al Jefferson and Mike Dunleavy sign in San Antonio...would they strike out?

Okay if Toney Allen signs with Clippers....would they strike out?

Okay if Paul Milsap/Kyle Korver/ sign with the Celtics....would they strike out?

Okay if Josh Smith/Jarret Jack/J.J. Redick sign with the Rockets....would they strike out?

Okay if Chauncey Billups/Chris Andersen/Matt Barnes/Corey Brewer sign with the Lakers...would they strike out?

Okay if Mo Williams/Dejuan Blair/Earl Clark sign with the Knicks....would we strike out?

How many teams do you think were honestly pursuing them? Really probably less than 4. Which means other teams with cap flexibility have plans not including them. So nothing stated here is ground breaking.....

that extra year is very appealing to most players, so you might have to make a trade of some sort so they can get full years, but it depends on the player and how bad he wants out.... how much you have to trade is the key... in other words lebron pretty much was going to leave, cleveland just made a trade so they could get some compensation.. which in reality wasn't much of a trade... so again, it depends..

When the league sees teams like Detroit and Indiana have success by winning it all or, pushing the eventual champs to the limits, it changes views. I think you will find teams looking less for that "superstar" and more for guys that fit and can contribute on both ends. I think/hope the era of the 1one star...the pure scorers with few other skills is coming to an end.

I hope so as well man. But those teams, the guys that fit, arent marketable to the casual fan.
y2zipper @ 6/24/2013 1:45 PM
I think it depends on the team. For a team like San Antonio that already has star players, getting a 2nd tier guy or two isn't striking out at all. Tony Parker is a star player in his prime and he Spurs can get better by improving the role players around him.

If you're Dallas or Houston and the two guys stay, then you've struck out regardless. 2nd-tier players aren't going to help those teams win. If Houston gets Al Jefferson instead of Howard, is that really going to help them? Probably not.

Yeah I guarantee Josh Smith ends up being a better Max contract then Amare Stoudamire.

Cant look at the players or contracts in a vacuum depends on the team talent and the situation they have with the cap.If u have 2 emerging star players on rookie deals a year from FA and your choice is sign Josh Smith now or dont and be maxed out anyway when u have to give them their contracts then signing Smith as your 3rd guy could make sense.

Personally I cant stand how the cap works it isnt logical with the exceptions and Bird Rights.U can build a very strong team if you tank for 2-3 years and accumulate as many assets as u can get with short term contracts/rookie deals. If u can time it right to get 2 FA's at the same time before those players get deals u can have a sick team. If we had the Cavs 2014/15 flexibility with all the young players we would be in a very good spot because players would sign here. The Cavs have about 20 million next year in 5 players plus their 4 draft picks. So they would have 9 players under 25 , 4 of them being premium draft picks plus 30 million in cap space. If I was Lebron I would want to go back looking at that team. If that team was in a major market like Chicago,NY or LA FA's would be running there
