Knicks · Melo is going to opt out in 2014 (page 2)

fishmike @ 7/3/2013 7:07 AM
we will opt out and get the max extension. Its always been about getting the most he can and Dolan will dish it out. Remember Allan Houston

Also, cuz it would be a crowded free agent class.

Not a damn thing wrong with either reason.

As far as extension its likely already been determined on a handshake deal with stipulation health. If Melo is healthy he gets extended not for any reason than its good business. Dolan does not break promises. His faults are paranoia, loyalty and stupidity but he is not a snake. How do I know? He stayed loyal to Isiah and resigned H20 to a 100mil contract when logic dictated not to.

If fans don't like Melo for the long term, or feel there is a better choice then thats too bad. 2015 is about who can you pair Melo with via free agency.

I have no problem with Melo being 1 of the players but if u pay him Kobe money we might as well give up because no way can we build a team around him making 30 million. It will be like it is now but worse because he will be older. I think the Knicks can build a winning team with Melo here but he has to take a friendlier deal around 15 per at most.I think at that amount we can put some pieces around him. I dont know if im going to be able to take him getting a max extension that may be the final straw because it will be 5 years before we can compete again

Reports are out today that Lakers are trying to sell Howard on the possibility of playing with Lebron or Carmelo after the 2014 season.
So we are 1 yerar away from the possibility of Anthony opting out and already... other teams are trying to pry him away.
Personally I would like that report to be investigated because if it originated with the Lakers that is classic Collusion...
They should have to cough up a 2nd round pick to both the Heat and the Knicks...
JayNYC @ 7/3/2013 11:41 AM
I can't say for certain, but I'd imagine he'd have to... This will likely be his last chance at a MAJOR contract w/ retarded numbers given the scope and direction of the CBA. Opting out 1 year earlier could be the difference of him receiving a larger per annual contract due to age VS being low balled the next. NYK will certainly overpay, as has been Dolan's history to show gratitude to his favorites. Furthermore, Carmelo Anthony has arguably cemented his legacy as being one if not, the best scorers this franchise has EVER seen... That in itself, may be reason enough for Dolan to give out at least 25 mil per.

You know what would be smart for both the Knicks and Melo? Have him opt of for 2014-15 and sign some sort of ridiculously HUGE salary for that one year - I have no idea what the limits on his salary would be, perhaps say $28M - and then extend it over like 3 years while toning it way down in 2015 so the Knicks have more space.

2014-15: $28M
2015-16: $13M
2016-17: $15M

That would be smart thinking.

I agree, he'd still get his bread... NYK wouldn't be killed in 2015.. which is when they have the bulk of there spending dollar. Hell make him the highest paid player in 2014.. 35 mil, who cares? We'll maybe Dolan.. that luxury tax hit $1 for $1.. might give him pause LOL

Don't think you can do that. I believe the salary for each year in a contract needs to be within a certain percentage of the previous year's salary.

I want to say that Tim Duncan's salary was not. Nor was Collison's of the Thunder.

I don't know, I can only find contract info for the remainder of they're existing contracts. According to basketball-reference and hoopshype both players are making similar amounts, less than $1M difference, from year to year on the remainder of their contracts.

According to Larry Coon:

Typically a salary can decrease by the same amount it can increase. For example, since the Larry Bird exception limits raises to 7.5% of the first-year salary, the salary may also decrease by up to 7.5% of the first-year salary.

All we had to do was look at Novak's deal to get a clue or understanding of this rule.

Nalod @ 7/3/2013 2:23 PM
Having cap space is also a lure to Melo to stay as if things are not grand here, there is the hope we can sign him a new "robin" wing man.

If he wants to leave, nothing to stop him.

"reports" about colluding with other players? I doubt there is anything substantial. Is it wrong to mention who might be a free agent and who the Lakers can sign?

Lakers would have to shit can MDA of course!

Maybe by then MDA and Dwight will have won a chip with Kobe?

I agree there is no chance in hell Melo will take less money. I mean back in 2011 he could have waited until free agency to sign with us and we could have used the assets to get a guy like Chris paul but taht didnt happen. I just hope Dolan doesnt go nuts on the next contract

Back in 2011 the owners were threatening a lockout and two teams had just lost their franchise players for nothing. Again, this scenario that you keep bringing up costs Melo 25 mil, and the Nuggets their franchise player while they give up nothing. Everyone loses except the Knicks. It wasn't happening. Melo was being moved at the deadline and he wanted a new deal before the owners 'tightened up' free agency. It has nothing to do with his next deal.

Everything he says about wanting to win would be BS u cant build a team with someone making that money. Well maybe with Lebron

Melo has always been about the money though. He just says he wants to win because it makes a good sound bite on sportscenter. If Melo really wanted to win he would have waited until the summer so the Knicks didn't have to trade away the entire team to get him. He deliberately forced a sign and trade so that he could get the max money he could get, good supporting team players be damned.

Again, the Nuggets were moving Melo and Melo wanted a deal before the lockout. Not too hard to understand. He was being moved at the deadline. It is fun to post fantasy scenarios that have the Knicks giving up nothing, Melo losing 25 mil and the Nuggets losing their franchise player just like the raps and cavs though.

Then why do you post that he should have waited. The guy new he was going to lose a ton by waiting and the Nuggets were not going to wait and get nothing for him. It wasn't happening and the Nuggets and Melo were doing what was best for them. Do you really thing Ujri waits and does move Melo at the deadline?

You are saying it would have cost him 25 mil and then later saying it was a money issue?

I was being hypothetical. Believe me i said the same things you said back in 2010-11.

Who care if they trade him or not? He HAS to sign a contract for him not to be a free agent. Wether he leaves the nuggets as a free agent or the nets as a free agent does not matter to me. The fact is if he wanted to come here he could have no matter how many times he was traded or no matter who he was traded to.
