NBC screen grabA Knicks knockoff shirt sold in a Midtown store.

The Knicks acted quickly after learning that a Midtown store was selling a racially offensive t-shirt with their team logo at the centerpiece.

The shirt had K-N-I spelled out, but C-K-S was replaced by G-G-A. The shirt was selling for $45, or $10 more than the unedited shirt, according to NBC 4 in New York.

"Everybody's buying," store manager Eddie Nunez told the TV station.

"Everybody's different. Some people are offended, some people laugh, some people buy it."

You can count the Knicks among those offended.

"We absolutely do not condone this t-shirt, which violates our trademark rights and now that it has been brought to our attention, the Knicks are working with the NBA to have the store cease and desist from selling them," the team said in a statement.

Nunez originally said they were going to keep selling the merchandise, but customer complaints and the Knicks’ legal action spurred them into removing them.

I used to have a shirt that said "Knickerbocker please" that's hilarious to me

kni**a??? That's just pure ignorant

How dumb do you have to be to OK this? Even if you're one of the ones that thinks it's funny, you don't need to be Carnac the Magnificent to predict backlash.

In the real world if a white man wears that shirt its going to create a differnt reaction than if a black man wears it.
Is it any more or less offensive?

and, it depends on where its worn and by whom!

Allanfan20 @ 8/22/2013 3:19 PM
It should be offensive no matter what your skin color is, if you are wearing it or selling it.

Not cool regardless.

I don't understand why it's okay for a racial epithet to be used by those within the race it's normally directed at? Why does that work, actually?

ChuckBuck @ 8/22/2013 3:46 PM
Aww, Knickers please...

Now this is racist!

In theory I'd agree, but context matters. I can call my sister a bitch, but if you do it, you're getting hit.

If a white man wore that it would come off as racist true. If a black man wears that he would come off as a cornball.

IronWillGiroud @ 8/22/2013 6:42 PM
i beg to differ,

almost positive the word on the bricks is that this is a dope ass shirt, and people would definitely wear it

arkrud @ 8/22/2013 6:50 PM
KNIGA in Russian means book... I cannot see anything offensive in this...

It's offensive no matter who wears it. I just chaulk it up to someone who don't respect themselves. I have more important things to do than seeing stupid people doing and saying and wearing stupid things.

Martin Please shut this thread down. You know where it's going.

Nolad....it's clear what discussion you were trying to instigate by posting this as an actual thread. The whole "If a white man wore that" as oppose to "If a black man wore it" blah blah blah. It was an interesting article to read. The article itself. It's now done. Thread worthy? Nah. Nothing good comes out of threads like this. It's head shaking news. Next....

I agree.

the golden question is not about the shirt,

it's about what kind of person you have to be to pull off wearing it,

and you know what kind of person pulls this off no problem? guy that probably squats and is just generally cool, in tune with God,

Shirt is shock value making profits for the manufacturer and the shop owner.

Its a novelty to whom ever buys it.
