SupremeCommander wrote:I am not a Republican or a Republican sympathizer - I think they suck. But I also think the Democrats and liberals suck just as much. Obama has met with no one and has made it *impossible* for the Tea Partyers to take anything back to their constituencies.

I think both parties are bought but one sucks a lot less than the other, which is why I vote Democrat in any national election. I'm also not following you on Obama not being diplomatic with the Tea Party as a whole. When he extended the Bush era tax cuts, maintained our absurd defense spending and disproportionally balanced the sequester on the backs of his constituents, was he not giving Tea Party something to take back to their people? When has the Tea Party returned that favor? And would you really want to capitulate to backwoods politicians that insist on cutting spending indiscriminately?

I've never been into comparing tragedies. The Tea Party is almost comical at this point but what's the point in comparing bad to less-bad?

this is not less-bad and bad. It's fucking horrible and something workable.

I couldn't disagree more. Gingrich and Clinton talked multiple times a day during the last furlough. Now? Obama is not a shmoozer and I'm sorry, the President of the United States needs to talk to everyone - including morons - if it means the largest business in the world stays open

As bad as it was for Clinton, I don't think he has ever had to deal with this degree of stupidity. Tea Party types don't negotiate. They simply make demands and vote against anything that is not 100% their way. By the way, this is coming from someone who considered himself more of an Eisenhower Republican.

when the tea partyers first emerged, I didn't vote for them but I thought how the movement sprung up was kind of cool because of how American it is. Now they've just proven to be a bunch of opportunistic morons. I wish Obama would have simply granted individuals a one year waiver from opting into the healthcare exchange - like the tea partyers asked for - just so it looks like they won something. And then when their constituents see how much it helped, everyone opts in and the tea morons don't get re-elected. And all this happens without internationally damaging the credibility of the USA. That last point is why I think Obama deserves criticism

The KKK was also a grassroots movement that sprung up at one point in American history. Needless to say, I wasn't encouraged by the Tea Party just because they became the Tea Party. Today, I personally consider them the greatest treat to American society. They make a strong case for why stupid people and the bulk of people south of the Mason-Dixon line shouldn't vote.

while I think jrod covered this post aptly, I will say that comparing a legal, political group to a domestic terror group sort of degrades your message

not for me. Tea Party may technically be a legal, political group but they are domestic terror group by any other name.

this is why the middle of the country flocks to groups like the tea party. The liberal rhetoric is loud and IMO disrespectful. The tea partyers might be fucking insane but I find your stance so disrespectful that it goes a long way to explaining why the counter-liberal movement has survived and thrived the way it does. I also find it humorous that the democrats haven't figured out a way to beat a bunch of insane fucking morons. It's like how the Knicks always find a way to play down to their competition. Anwyay, fine, I guess the way to deal with the tea party is to continue to treat them as pariahs and they'll continue to do desperate things. Great strategy, democrats!

Why not call a spade a spade? They seem more than ready to do the same from their perspective e.g. "Obama was born in Kenya", "Obama is a socialist hell bent on destroying the country", "Liberals don't love America", etc. The difference is that our reality is actually grounded in reason and fact. Their mentality is nothing new; we have seen it play out throughout history. They are the people that persecute great minds like Copernicus for proposing a heliocentric theory of our solar system. We see it today in the opposition to Global Warming. They are the people that suggested that a man can not hold public office because of his religious affiliation e.g. JFK when he was running for President. We see it today with Obama constantly being accused of being a Muslim. It goes on and on. They are little people, with little minds and ultimately, it's our responsibility to drag them into the future. It really is the only way progress has ever been made.

Call a spade a spade. Yes indeedy. Quite an ironic choice of terms. Your subliminal liberal rhetoric, so quiet and respectful.

So of course, liberal theology brings you the earth as a planet, Copernicus being persecuted for saying so, Global Warming, and we'll throw in a secret love of Catholicism just to throw you conservative religionists a bone. You've got some great facts there.

"We" and "They".

Keep taking names, I'm sure when the powers that be come knocking on your door, you'll be on Obama's personal foundation of determining who's stupid and who's actually worthy of the right to vote.

Yes, liberalism. Bringing you the tremendous facts of abortion, euthanasia and other fine examples of "reason and fact." Tell me, when do "we" start deciding who's actually worthy of life itself? Why stop at voting? Oh wait, you of the "we" are already discussing that, aren't "we"?

Global warming, right. You are really still chewing on Mr. Nobel's hockey stick? Did you buy lots of stock in end of the world Y2K futures?

Keep paying your income taxes. Keep your worldview that Uncle Sam is going to take care of everything for you, because when "we" are in power, everything is being done correctly. Only Harvard grads need apply to positions of power, you idiot conservatives who live on worldviews based on faith or anything other than "our" rational "facts" please get on the train.

Unbelievable.

I'm tempted to respond to your "points" but realize it won't make much of a difference. You're entitled to your opinion, and I'll maintain my position(which is far from the distorted view you're attempting to paint). But since you're the only person that appears to relate to the Tea Party, I'll ask, how can you perceive what they are doing as acceptable?

Markji @ 10/8/2013 6:46 AM
Dear jrod (and RonRon),
Please inform your Republican leaders that a default would economically ruin our country and bring the entire world economy down with it. They now are saying that a U.S. default wouldn't be such a bad thing. Really??? Are they completely out of their minds???

They can work to fix the debt problem without doing crazy, komakazi maneuvers.

Open Letter to the Obamanites here in this thread:

Nice of you to ask us stupid ignorant conservative Republicans to fix the debt problem. We are so very glad. Perhaps the POTUS might care to help?

For the record, I do not support or follow the Tea Party. Taxation is such a minimal issue, anyway. If our new caesar wants to spend another 4 or five terms taxing us into oblivion, I'm sure he knows what he's doing. He went to Harvard, you know. Render unto caesar...

Is $15 trillion in debt really such a bad thing? Is socialized medicine really such a bad thing? Is middle of the road employers cutting hours and hiring more part time help to avoid paying for healthcare for everyone really such a bad thing? Is the fact that generic drug prices are now increasing by thousands of percent over the course of one day really such a bad thing? I'm sure our Potus knew all this was going to happen. It's okay. He knows what he's doing. It's those lousy greedy corporations! Capitalist Republican pigs! By the way, how many inuguration parties does it take to screw in a light bulb? Hey, at least those unemployment numbers are going down, huh? And the Dow is on it's way to 20K!!! Yay!!!

Don't worry, the economy is Bush's fault. The deficit is Bush's fault. Oh, wait, no it's the Tea Party's fault! It's those dayumed Republicans! It's that stupid Pope guy and his anti-gay rhetoric! Stupid fundamentalists! Keep them from voting! Keep them out of the public view! Ban those idiots! Deportation now!

Hyperbole.

you haven't added anything to discussion. If Republicans were so interested in economy and debt, better steps would have been taken with Medicare Part D, Bush Tax Cuts, 2 unfunded wars. Austerity has hurt recovery economy and was patently stupid and unnecessary.

Taxes and rates are at all time low.

You didn't answer anything ....so I'll try again.

Do you think the Republican party tactics are a correct means to support their financial policies?
1. Shut down the U.S. Gov't?
2. Force the U.S. Gov't to default on its debt obligations?
3. Do you really understand the consequences if the U.S. defaults on its debt?

P.S. I am not a Democrat. I am very strongly an independent. I look; I see; I try to understand; and then I make my decision. I don't blindly follow either party. However, what I see is that the Republican Party is the one that has been most obstructive, divisive and politically caustic, especially since the 2000 election.

Taxes and rates are at all time low.

And Obama proposed making them even lower (lowering the corporate tax rate from 35 to 28%, for example) but the Republicans wouldn't accept it.
You're not gonna convince JROD though. It's better to let the Republicans continue to become a shrinking minority.

I believe tax rolls are the lowest they've been since the Eisenhower administration. The deficit is the lowest its been in 5 years and 80 percent of it is from the Bush years. Hundreds of thousands of govt workers have been laid off. I don't get this meme that Obama is a socialist. He might be the most Wall Street friendly president ever.

All of those expenses that you cited were passed by the Congress, you know? The Congress does have the option to try to repeal or modify the laws it already passed though. But if they can't get enough votes to support a repeal, then that that's how a Democracy works. Your prized legislation doesn't always pass.
You haven't even addressed that the deficit is lower than it's been in years.
I guess I was wrong about you having a desire to correct any statement about racial prejudice though!

Tarp was passed and signed by Bush before Obama took office, but Obama supported it.

At no point did I suggest that Democrats/liberals have everything figured out as you are implying. I'd be one of the first people to voice my displeasure of both the party and President Obama's policies (abroad and domestically). In the context of this shutdown, however, I think it is very difficult not to put the blame squarely on the shoulders of the Tea Party/Republicans. The intent of this thread, or at least as how I intended it, is to better understand the rationalization for shutting down our government AND bringing our country closer to a recession if the intent is to help Americans. So I'll ask you again, how is it that you can perceive their behavior and this strategy as being acceptable? Please answer that as opposed to drifting off on these tangents that are absent of any real fact.

You said it was a minimal issue but followed it with a strong, blatantly inaccurate accusation. You can't expect people to ignore the accusation just because you feel it's minimal. If I were to say, "Here's a minimal issue. JRod hates all ______ [insert racial or ethnic group]," I would expect you to come out with a strong response.

The focus of the thread was the stupidity of the Tea Party. What is the Tea Party about, again? I stated taxation was a minimal issue because whatever our POTUS wants to do to handle the debt he's running up (oh wait, sorry, he's not running up any debt, ObamaCare and TARP funding and everything else is being funded by the cuts in the military budget, right?) he's going to do anyway, should he get the Constitution amended to his liking.

Nice misdirection on the racial epithet. I'm pretty sure all us conservatives are all stupid bigots at heart.

It's a simple dividing line: "we" and "they".

Please continue.

The focus of this thread is to better understand how anyone could deem this Tea Party/Republican strategy, of shutting down the government, as being acceptable. I'll admit that we've drifted off topic at times but the intent has always been the same. Now, let's discuss.

Tangents that have no real facts:

-->Obamacare has nothing to do with moving towards socialized medicine?
-->Middle sized employers are not cutting hours and hiring more PT employees to avert having to pay healthcare for everyone at 29 hours a week under Obamacare?

Pharma companies are not riding in on the fact that Obamacare is suddenly adding massive amounts of people to the ranks of people buying meds? I worked in Pharma for over 20 years, I know how the buying groups and wholesalers operate. They haven't seen price increases like this in this short of a time span EVER.

-->We don't have 15 trillion in debt?

We're actually closer to $17 trillion in debt. To be perfectly honest, I'm not terribly concerned about the debt as I am about how the money is being spent. It's become apparent that many Americans have forgotten the concept of an investment. It seldom yields immediate returns; the goal, however, is for longer termed windfalls. Unfortunately for us, much of the money has been spent on wars that we didn't have to fight (to the tune of $1 billion per day), with weapons that are grossly overpriced.

Just for perspective, the B-2 stealth bomber ranges in price from anywhere between $737 million-$2.1 billion per unit. When is it that Al-Queda developed an advanced radar/surface-to-air-missle system, to even justify its use? The F-22 Raptor (though never used in combat) and another waste of a weapon, ranges in price from anywhere between $150 million-$500 million per unit. Why do we need this if our F-15's have never even been shot down in a dogfight? And all of this, and we haven't even talked about the overhead fees including maintenance of the aircrafts, training of the pilots, upkeep for the bases and their personnel, etc. Just for perspective, the operating budget for the Department of Education is only $23.4-$56.0 billion and the cost of these aircraft alone, engulfs that several fold.

Our military is a black hole. If this money were actually spent toward building our infrastructure, e.g. better funding for public schools, lowering the cost of college tuition, increased grant donations for scientific research, etc. then the debt wouldn't be so bad because we'd be seeing a return on it through the creation/expansion of industries.

-->Obamacare has nothing to do with moving towards socialized medicine?

I don't know if it does but I certainly hope so. Why wouldn't this be a good thing for all parties? It frees industry of having to provide health insurance for its employees (thereby lowering their overhead aka the same function as cutting taxes for them) AND it opens the doorway to a far more dynamic healthcare system that lowers the cost of treatment by distributing the risk more efficiently. There is a reason why countries like France, England, Sweden, etc. have better ranked systems than ours and they manage to do it with a fraction of the resources. Just for perspective, our expenditures on healthcare for our citizens is the equivalent of France's entire economy, which is the 5th largest in the world.

-->Middle sized employers are not cutting hours and hiring more PT employees to avert having to pay healthcare for everyone at 29 hours a week under Obamacare?

That is a problem that is not unique to the Obama administration. It has been the case for decades, starting around the time of something called "trickle down economics" and our jobs being sent abroad. I wonder what President/party was responsible for that? Fortunately, there has been no correlation between the passing of the Affordable Healthcare Act (AHA) and part-time jobs. After all, companies with less than 50 employees can exempt themselves from the provision, which is just about every small to mid sized business in the country.

-->I didn't just discuss the price of 4 out of 5 generic drugs going up from $6 for a 90 month supply to $60 for a one month supply with three different pharmacists? Pharma companies are not riding in on the fact that Obamacare is suddenly adding massive amounts of people to the ranks of people buying meds? Aren't you suppose to be the member of a party nuanced in economics? This is simple cost-demand principle. If there is an increased demand, the market place adapts to meet that demand. The more activity by the market, the more competition that ensues. The more competition, the lower the price. Considering that Obamacare has only been partially available, since October 1st, I'm going to go ahead and presume that those prices pre-dated its implementation or is just something you're pulling from Fox News/your ass. In any case, the mandate included in Obamacare will artificially increase demand and catalyze the chain of events I discussed.

You suggested that stupid people shouldn't vote. That was the tangent I was responding to.

Please look up the word "tangent" in a dictionary. Also, please learn the fine art of sticking to an issue. Now that I've answered your questions, tell me HOW IS IT ACCEPTABLE FOR REPUBLICANS TO SHUTDOWN A GOVERNMENT.

NardDogNation - "tell me HOW IS IT ACCEPTABLE FOR REPUBLICANS TO SHUTDOWN A GOVERNMENT."
It's not acceptable and now about 90% of the American people think this way too.

Gov't is one entity. Politics is a different entity that has transformed "Government" into anger, hate, and non-functioning chaos.

I totally agree with you. Take the money out of war and put it into education, infrastructure, etc and build up our nation.

Of the $17 Trillion in debt, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have cost us $4 Trillion, and more expenses keep accumulating every day. That is a tremendous amount for 2 unnecessary wars. Add to this the tremendous loss of life and suffering and we can start to realize how terrible these wars really were/are.
