Knicks · Honest question would you be happy if Dolan spent big money on RC Buford and Greg Popovich to run this organization from groun (page 2)

MSG3 @ 11/11/2013 5:34 PM
Guys like the SA front office would never work for Dolan. Never ever ever.
JamesKPolk @ 11/11/2013 5:45 PM
How long have you been a fan of the team? Do you honestly think Dolan would give anyone that kind of power?
Finestrg @ 11/11/2013 6:09 PM
I talked about this several days back -- my guy would be Daryl Morey. Complete autonomy. He's all over the big trades/acquisitions (Harden, Lin, Howard) and has a great feel for drafting/acquiring promising young players (perfect combination)...Not sure how long his current contract runs with the Rockets -- as soon as it's fair game to talk to him, we should.

I would also reach out to Tom Penn. He assisted Kevin Pritchard (I would've said this guy too but he's currently with the Pacers) a few years ago in Portland and I think they were on the right track -- they assembled a lot of nice young talent that fit well together. Taken right from Wikipedia: "Tom Penn is an NBA analyst on ESPN where he is regularly featured as a basketball operations expert on advanced analytics, salary cap issues, the NBA Draft, player trades and collective bargaining issues. Penn started working with ESPN during the 2010 NBA Draft, and during the free agency period of 2010, Penn operated ESPN's cap machine on SportsCenter, where he manipulated a touchscreen to show potential destinations for LeBron James and other marquee free agents. Penn has also been on ESPN using the ESPN Trade Machine to break down NBA trades."

This guy was also a player agent and a criminal defense attorney at one time, among other achievements...Impressive. Bright young man right here...Penn's probably more realistic over Morey -- Morey's probably not leaving Houston any time soon esp. after assembling such an awesome team. He's gonna want to see it through now and get a ring -- multiple rings. Morey's a reach, but Penn could be had if we offered him enough cash. He may have the itch to get back into an NBA front office somewhere.

At this point The Answer Man would welcome Ernie Grunfeld with open arms, if he was given complete autonomy to do his job

What Would Popovich do with Chris Smith?

they continue to find studs undrafted and late in the first round/second round.

Sure, having Tim Duncan makes Danny Green look like an all star - but Pop is the guy that makes all of it move.

If Dolan had an ounce of intelligence, he would make those guys part owners and get them in here yesterday.

Its not. He is an imbecile with a shit down of money.

Exactly. People like to keep pointing to the luck with Duncan. But they've made so many good moves with low picks its insane.

RonRon @ 11/11/2013 7:04 PM
I say we should lure Poppavich like we did with Dantoni like $$$ and give him the power/incentive/stock that Riley wanted and never got here in NYC, see my other post...
Adding a analytics that would be under Poppavich's experience but both work TOGETHER with the GM/COACH

Have Poppavich coach a couple years here, handpicking the staff himself, and find a successor to him like Riley did with Spoelsha

With the next generation and generation after, much is at stake

Knick fans might still be ahead than BKLYN fans in these few years but it could change quickly if 2000-2010 repeats itself with BKLYN in the picture, there is too much too risk and lose and unlike Zen Master that NEEDS the SUPER POWER talent to run his system and has no experience like the Spur's staff in patience/development

Whether we will rise to be the Yankee's or fall to be the Met's of BBALL in NY

Dolan never had competition from Jersey Net's but the fan base is quickly growing and there is much more to lose than gain with the way he is falling

or

Sell the team and let someone else run it while you still own CableVision/Time Warner/MSG Channels and NOT still can benefit from the success of the Knick's while selling the team at a HIGH

The Entitled

RonRon - two points to consider:

1. so long as the Knicks are a highly profitable franchise, with increasing value in the internet age, why would Dolan/ Cablevision sell?

2. Pop would demand to buy the groceries and cook the meal. Do you really think Dolan is mature enough to stand back and relinquish that much control?

First time Dolan sets foot in the locker room to guarantee a win, how does any made man GM, with nothing to lose, respond?

Money can't buy you love.

because NYK's never had a rival like BKLYN and we have failed miserably the past decade + with no success outside of our 99 Finals with SPREE/Houston/Camby/LJ/ and a broken Ewing
BKLYN is the new thing, that kids and the next generation could see as the "cool" franchise, especially if they have greater success than us and we pull H20/Joe Johnson part II with Melo as he will be in decline on his next contract

He simply isn't worth near 20m, nevertheless 30m in a more restricted salary cap and rules under the new CBA

In the end, the Knick's franchise is a business, and the reason why the Russian is spending billions is to generate a larger/global market, starting with attacking NYK and attacking Dolan first
With the Net's, there are billions are fans in the global market as Knick fans and many millions of die hard sports fans here in NY
I am not sure if we can take another decade of doom this time with a new team to contend and overtake the fan base as a threat to the NY market

We are already seeing that Melo does not have enough pieces to be contenders and he needs serious help but with this new CBA, we won't ever get those pieces if he wants a 20m+ contract and don't have much draft picks/youth/assets left to mortgage the future with

But with 2015 FA class, we have the opportunity to retool and be a better managed team with the pieces needed to make noise and contend if spent wisely
We might not get this opportunity in some of our eyes here to rebuild that fast in such a short amount of time
If we choose to ignore it and still overpay for Melo at 32+ years of age than, Dolan is putting a lot at stake on ONE player that isn't even a franchise caliber level talent

Dolan has a lot more to lose than gain, in the end the decision is his to make, and he has been making the wrong ones when he gets involved
Smart business men surround themselves with people that they can trust, keep, and are smart/business savy to run it, efficiently, and attract the pieces needed to continue to build/generate fans

LOSING TEAMS will only lose fans/business and this time, there is a team contending within our boroughs

RonRon - you wrote at length, but you never addressed either question directly.

Hear The Answer Man now, and believe him later...

Dolan/ Cablevisionis not selling anytime soon. Profits, regardless of the record, will continue to roll in. The Knicks are a corporate asset, which means they can absorb mediocre performance on the court with its deep well of revenue, as a piece in a larger set of holdings.

For full year 2012, Cablevision consolidated net revenues increased 0.1% to $6.705 billion, consolidated AOCF decreased 17.2% to $1.899 billion and consolidated operating income decreased 38.2% to $759.5 million, all compared to 2011.

For full year 2011, Cablevision consolidated net revenues increased 8.5% to $6.701 billion, consolidated AOCF grew 8.1% to $2.295 billion and consolidated operating income grew 3.6% to $1.229 billion, all compared to 2010.

The Dolans fund the Knicks out of petty cash.

We had one in Pat Riley--since its been a team made up of crp management. Why not pay huge money for the executives in charge who have long term proven track records of winning championships? WHY dont we get the bets management????? Dolan is involved with some of this personnel decision making and clearly that is scary--people pay incredible money to see the Knicks--don't they deserve the best? Give them the money and freedom to build a big time winner we can enjoy for years.

I'd have no problem with that but Popovich, at the very least, has made it clear that he'll retire the day that Duncan does. That being said, I don't see him coming to the Knicks. Much like our roster, the Knicks need fresh and young talent. The best run teams in the league, are mostly run by relatively young men e.g. Darryl Morey in HOU, Sam Presti in OKC, Bob Myers in GS, Rob Hennigan in ORL, etc. The Knicks should be looking for these types and I would imagine that Kevin Pritchard should get a look, considering his draft record with the Blazers.

Empares are not changing, they crashing.
The only event which will save the Knicks in our live time - the death of the owner.
But mans live, even rotten mans life is more precious that bad fealings of millions of fans.
So long live to the naked king.

If Dolan is out of the picture that's all that counts. Whoever takes over wont be Dolan. And if the team is sold that's even better.

Over the years, Ms. Dolan has been instrumental in working across Cablevision's properties to maximize opportunity, brand strength and customer experience. She spearheaded a number of initiatives at Madison Square Garden, including the 2008 migration of the national music network Fuse from Rainbow Media to Madison Square Garden, where she was responsible for marketing, creative services and other key functions during and after the transition. Additionally, she played an integral role in the formation of MSG Varsity, Cablevision's television and interactive services dedicated to covering high school sports across the tri-state area.

Ms. Dolan received her master's in publishing with a concentration in marketing from Pace University and her bachelor's in English from the State University of New York at Albany. She is currently a candidate for a master's degree in English literature. Ms. Dolan serves as a member of Cablevision's board of directors, and is also on the board of directors at AMC Networks and The Madison Square Garden. She has served on the Foundation Board for SUNY Albany and the National Board for Women in Cable & Telecommunications (WICT). Additionally, she was recognized by Multichannel News and WICT as a "Wonder Woman" in 2004, and as one of the top 50 most influential women in cable by CableFAX The Magazine.

What y'all want is dolans money but him out of the way.

He needs to delegate.

Problem now is our draft picks are depleted for a number of years. The cycle of cap space without picks gives us stars but not enough support.

Lets also look at duncan, the dude was halfway out the door to Orlando but the continuance of leadership was promised and he was convinced to stay. not for money, but for the winning.

Pop has rebuilt the team and at Duncans age has limited his minutes and manages him well. They came within a wisper of winning it last year!!!

Look how they groom Kwai Leonard and the kid is coming off the bench. No proclamations or demands to start, no flat top, flashy shoes or any bull, just a kid working hard and learning to be the next big thing and be it for a long time! They traded George Hill for the pick and George had put Parker on the bench his rookie year!! Pop benched Parker!!!!

Fans in NY could accept all the above with a guy like Pop because Pop tells it like it is, is critical of his players and of course has the cred. His owner backs him up and his players respect him. Ewing would have done well to have him in his corner as a knick. SPree would have fallen in line or fall out. Marbury would never been traded here. Melo and Amare would never be here. LIfe would be very different.

Knick fans want Pop? I don't think we could handle it. Dolan could not handle a patient man. A patient man would never work for Dolan.

that is so true.. but here is what seperates the great organizations like the spurs from others... they have multiple rings because they were able to get gems like parker and ginobili with late picks..where other teams would have and did pass them up... They tend to maximize every asset they have....

I'm not much of a historian, but San Antonio had to scrape the bottom of the barrel to get Robinson and then revisit that barrel to get Duncan. We've been low, but not that low since '85 with the Ewing draft. $200 seats and a full house in B'klyn demand some kind of winning.

they lost Robinson for a year and tanked and were the worst team in the league.
They have run a great organization, but its easier to draft and turn low picks into good players when your building around Tim Duncan. Its hard to find those players when your building around Melo, or Josh Smith or Al Horford or any of the lesser guys in the league who are still very good.

I am not talking about 1 year, I am talking about 5years + of continued sucking and building a deeper hole like we have done in our past

earl, I am saying for the generations after us, the reasons why "Kia" is going to try to hit the market and grab a piece of the pie
But instead BKLYN can over take the future up and coming generations BULK of future fans if we pull another 2000-2010
There is a lot at stake, that is the reason why the Russian spent Billions to make some noise, even on hundreds of millions on taxes, because it is about THE FUTURE BRAND they are building
