Knicks · Beno Speaks Out! (page 1)

NEW YORK -- Beno Udrih isn't happy about people criticizing his play. He doesn't want to "point fingers" at a specific culprit, but it's pretty clear that he's talking about Mike Woodson.

"I kind of feel like when I do the right thing, it's not the right thing in some people's eyes. It's just tough. It's easy to point fingers when the team loses. But it comes down to, we are a team, we lose together. No matter who makes a mistake or who doesn't, it's still a team loss," Udrih said. "So I think all of this stuff should be kept out of the media and not call certain people out or something. We've just got to go out there and fix it and watch video and fix it as a team."

Again, Udrih didn't want to name names. But it's pretty clear that he's unhappy that Woodson was critical of him in the wake of the Knicks' one-point loss to Washington.

Beno Udrih's, right, best wasn't good enough against Russell Westbrook and the Thunder on Wednesday.
Woodson said that Udrih "opened the flood gates" for Washington's Bradley Beal to get to the basket for an uncontested layup with 6.9 seconds to go. The Knicks had a foul to give ad failed to do so. They became a national punchline for a few days following the loss.

"I got pointed out a couple of times that I think it was unfortunately a team loss at the end," Udrih said.

Woodson said after Wednesday's loss that Udrih "struggled a little bit" against Oklahoma City. The 31-year-old shot 1-for-6 from the floor with six assists and two turnovers. He badly missed three shots (one hit the side of the backboard) and had one blocked.

"Beno struggled a little bit tonight and I am going to need Beno to play because I don’t know when [Raymond Felton and Pablo Prigioni] are going to actually come back," Woodson said.

Udrih hinted the criticism he's taken has impacted his confidence on the floor.

"Sometimes I have a feeling like when I [make] a mistake they have a feeling that I'm making the mistake on purpose. As weird as it sounds, that's how I feel," Udrih said.

Udrih signed a veteran's minimum contract with the Knicks over the summer to be the team's third point guard. The feeling at the time was Udrih would get significant playing time, because Woodson would play the Felton-Prigioni backcourt for heavy minutes, making Udrih the de facto backup.

Woodson, though, has gone away from the two-guard lineup, and Udrih hadn't received much playing time before Felton (hamsrting/groin) and Prigioni (toe) went down with injuries.

Udrih wasn't complaining about playing time on Wednesday, though. It was more about criticism of his play.

"I've always been pretty good with not turning over the ball and this year it's totally different. I don't know what happened that summer. I don't think I forgot [how] to play basketball. So there's a lot of factors," he said. "You can point fingers at me as much as you can but if things don't work it's not one person's fault ... It's a team sport."

Udrih says the team hasn't tuned Woodson out but added "it's tough to say. It's tough to be in his shoes too. I'm not just saying his message doesn't come across. Maybe we're not hearing the right thing or, I just don't know. We all have to communicate better as people."

The last thing this team needs is a controversy or lockerroom problems, but this is looking like there's starting to be some issues. Woody's uneven treatment of his players has consequences. I haven't really liked Beno's playing but it seems that there's some issue underneath the surface that needs to be addressed. Losing tends to make things worse, but it's not a good sign to have a player make comments like this.

The end of the Wizards game is on beno. Also, he hasn't looked that good when he is on the court. Woodson usually takes the high road in regards to players poor play. Not sure why he is going after Beno but I don't think there is any controversy in regards to Beno. I think he needs to do his job a bit better and contribute to the team before he comes out against the coach. Not sure that his words were meant that way as Begley is after Woodson. I do think Woodson and Mills need to figure out how to get some wins. Today's outcome seemed predetermined even before Melo went out. Beno is the third string point guard in his second month with this team. His words shouldn't fracture the team anymore or less then it already is. Grunwald moves Beno for a second round pick like Brewer last year at the deadline if he Felton, Prigs and Murry are healthy. Not sure what Mills does.

I blame coach for that. Beno should have never been in the game. If you are down 3 with 3 seconds to go you don't put Shaq out there to shoot a 3. So why would you put Beno out there to get a defensive stop?

Especially a player who came from the team were help defense in this situation was automatic as sun comes up in the morning.
Pure Beno cannot get used to this crap after playing with the most intelligent players and one of the best GM/Coach in the NBA.
He made a pure decision to sign with train wreck of a teem but not only he was deceived by the 54-win season.

woodson has many failings as a coach and one of them is playing favorites. at this point it's transparent-- and egregious.

his guys are melo and smith and felton.

these aren't his guys:

jeremy lin
novak
copeland
shumpert
udrih

CrushAlot @ 12/25/2013 11:20 PM
Beno also complaining about today's uniform and said it impacted his shot. Lots to complain about today.

A guy shoots .167 in a game and its the shirt and the coach?
yellowboy90 @ 12/26/2013 12:47 AM
I don't like Woodson coaching but Beno is a trip. Why was he stucj on the bench in Milwaukee and put up bad numbers as a starter in Orlando? Beno play has been bad since he left Sacramento but it could be helped out with better coaching. I think this maybe good but Beno acts like he has been a heady smart big time player when he hasn't.

I think this all stems from Woody and CO. being mad that Beno came into camp way out of shape.

nixluva @ 12/26/2013 2:00 AM
Beno is not one that should complain, but I do agree that Woody is uneven in his discipline of players. I mean the crap JR is allowed to do every night is crazy. It's just a mess when it comes to "holding guys accountable" as Wood loves to say. I'm positive that this has chafed quite a few players. It's just another thing that goes in the mix with this team. I don't think people would make a big deal about it if Woody wasn't holding himself out to be a guy that is no nonsense.

You guys don't think Shumpert and Beno are playing scared because of Woodson?

"playing favorites" is an expression that means "showing favor to particular people." consider taking a night course in remedial english.

therefore it isn't the minutes played it's the way he treats the players and the things he says about them.

So a marginal NBA player is blaming a coach who's gone 125-63 in the last 3 years? And he's also blaming the uniforms. I don't think he realizes how foolish he sounds.

Yep.
Just get the rest of your NBA income and shut up.
Knicks are NBA players pre-retirement job anyways.
Just prepare your Becket list Beno.

when scrubs feel ok to call you out, you've lost the locker room.

And when you have lots of overrated players and inflated expectations, this is what inevitably happens. Few people (and certainly not the players themselves) think the roster was overrated.

I never understand why people put down one part of the Knicks organization to when they are trying to defend another part. There is no mutual exclusivity to being bad. The problem is actually simple. The are all bad! No one has 1 good year over the past decade with only 1 bad side.

The Front Office is terrible - No patience, no idea of how to build a good TEAM and always overpaying
The coaching staff is terrible - No adjustments, favoritism, lack of movement during plays, to much doubling/switching on D and an overreliance on ISO's.
The Player are terrible - Lack of effort, Low Basketball IQ, Durability and our overall problem for this past decade is the lack of any 2 way players in there prime.

My rule is pretty simple: If someone looks good until the day they've been working for Dolan for a while, it's probably just a bad situation bringing out the worst in them. The statistical evidence actually is that it's extraordinarily rare that a coach leads a team to win more or fewer games than would be expected just by the composition of the roster and a robotic coach. Statistically, there have only been a handful in the history of the game, and those were coaches that were always extraordinarily good or bad, not ones whose teams played badly for a few weeks or even a season. I don't really think Woodson is bad or good. I think he like nearly all coaches probably doesn't have a meaningful impact on the W-L record over a large sample of games.

People waste so much energy defending this disgrace of an Organization

I wish it were Sunday already! I'd rather watch the last game of the Giants/Jets than this crud.
