Knicks · What About Our P.R. Ramifications if.... (page 1)

What becomes of our ability to attract top flight stars if the Carmelo Anthony experiment fails? Does this cement our reputation as a incompetent franchise to stars that would have been interested in playing for New York city? Does trading Melo improve or diminish this "prestige"? It's an interesting thought, IMO, because politics and business go hand in hand, so stuff like this does matter.
Nalod @ 1/7/2014 11:15 AM
I don't think too many "stars" are lining up to play with Melo.
I'd say trading him or letting him walk would be more attractive.

The "Pristige" is not real. It exists because fans think it does. Media is a nasty mess to play in and the owner is an idiot.

Seems the "mecca" is not all its cracked up to be.

GustavBahler @ 1/7/2014 11:22 AM
Firing Walsh, then Grunwald, and hiring a lackey with no experience on the bball side of the franchise did us no favors. The better you do here as an exec, the more likely you will be shown the door. Not what I would call a recipe for success.

Guys in the league like Melo and like playing with him. Taking a huge pay cut to fit with the Knicks cap situation is a different thing. If the Knicks had the cap space/assets there would be opportunities for his presence to help make the roster better.

Yeah, I thought the "prestige" was bullshit until all these stars were rumored to sign with us after 2010 (and none did). Now I'm back to my pessimistic Knick-self, lol. If I were an athlete worth a damn, I'd never want to play in NY because it's only a matter of time before they become public enemy number 1 (see Patrick Ewing, Allan Houston, Marcus Camby, Stephon Marbury, Amar'e Stoudemire and now Melo). It's a major reason why I think the draft is the best way to get any real talent that isn't overpaid here.

You got me there. Even so, how privy are players to front office shufflings and re-shufflings? It kind of feels that many are ignorant to that kind of stuff and the day-to-day operations of a franchise/CBA.

Ewing had some rough times but he's still celebrated like a hero every time he returns to the garden. Not so bad.

I think that reputation has been cemented pretty firmly by now. We've only won 1 playoff series this century!

The sad truth, but the clippers have arguably the most pathetic history in the NBA and a horrible owner, and they are somewhat respected around the league at the moment, so maybe there is some hope.

H1AND1 @ 1/7/2014 12:38 PM
Remember when we signed Amare he said something like he signed here to bring the Knicks back to respectability (I can't remember exactly what he said). But yeah, status as a dysfunctional laughingstock is pretty well cemented in just about everyone's minds at this point.

Or how about when we lost to the Heat in the 1st round a couple years back and they were laughing and making sarcastic comments about some prediction that the Knicks may surprise in the series.

Let's face it were a complete joke and the only reason most players will come here is money. And that's a good thing at least because it's the one thing we actually have going for us, I guess.

Yeah, now when it's convenient. He got booed mercilessly his last few years as a player here, which was unforgivable considering what he did for this franchise. That precedent doesn't bode well for other new-comers.

The scary thing is that it might get worse. Even with such an abysmal track record, we had guys that were reportedly interested in us. I'm definitely not hearing that now with the supposed gems of 2015 and 2016, which makes me wonder.

Houston and Childs? Not stars but fairly decent FA nabs at the time.

They're about as privy as we are, they read the papers, watch ESPN. Most elite FAs are corporations onto themselves and make sure they have all the info they need to make the right decision. If winning a ring is important to them as well as the money, their agent will fill them in if they haven't been paying attention. Some just go for the biggest paycheck, some want more than that. I'm hoping we will be able to attract those who fall under the latter. But as I said, Dolan isn't making it any easier.

Bingo and the Childs we signed was much better than the one that played for us (courtesy of Van Gundy handicapping his freedom with the ball).

Nalod @ 1/7/2014 3:16 PM
Ewing had a love/hate with media and fans. Dude was pretty egocentric and sometimes created his own mess with comments.
His demands for money and support were ok. He basically had Nelson fired because the uptempo did not suite his style in an contract year where statistics would have cost him. His trade demands by his own admission were regretted.

He'd make promises which a lot of players do but also get fried for. His worst "crime" was not telling staff he was hurting and by that they would not know if he could hold up. The reason for "the finger roll" was his shoulder was very painful and he could not dunk. How that changes things I don't know but we went to him at crunch time when he was hurting. He was a warrior and a too proud to admit his pain. Thats very admirable but it might have cost us. How? Im not sure.

These are things I have read about over the years. He is a knick great that nobody can deny!

I'm confused. So we are saying Ewing wasn't good enough to attrack free agents? So it was his fault not management and NYC? You guys are killing me lately
holfresh @ 1/7/2014 3:47 PM
What about the media/fans treatment perspective FA stars who may want to come here ...Melo's tenure solidify the fact that it's not easy to play in NY...
