GustavBahler @ 1/8/2014 5:10 PM

While they realize it may be difficult to pursue, the New York Knicks have begun to explore the potential trade market for guard J.R. Smith in recent days, ESPN.com has learned.

Sources close to the situation said Wednesday that the organization has become increasingly frustrated with Smith's on and off-court transgressions and increasingly feel that a fresh start might be best for all parties.
Smith was fined $50,000 by the NBA on Wednesday for "recurring instances of unsportsmanlike conduct" following his shoelace stunts in the New York Knicks' past two games.

Wednesday's fine didn't necessarily push the Knicks over the top, but one source with knowledge of the Knicks' thinking said the organization has become "fed up" with Smith's erratic behavior.

Knicks coach Mike Woodson hinted at that frustration Wednesday when he called Smith's conduct "unacceptable" in an interview later Wednesday with ESPN New York 98.7 FM's "The Stephen A. Smith and Ryan Ruocco Show."

"I'm not happy about this, because he was warned, he comes back and he makes the same mistake, and it's not right," Woodson said. "It's just got to stop. I keep saying this every time something pops up, but it's got to stop."

The coach later added that Smith has been "unprofessional about how he's approached this whole thing. Something's gotta be done. It has to stop. I'll address it tomorrow when I see him, and then we'll go from there."

Due to the nature of his contract, Smith cannot be traded prior to January 15. The Knicks, furthermore, privately acknowledge that it will be difficult in the current climate to trade Smith, who has two seasons left after this one on a three-year, $18 million contract.

The 28-year-old underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in the offseason. Smith then missed training camp following surgery, with Woodson saying recently that the shooting guard is still dealing with soreness in his knee.

Smith's scoring is down markedly from last season. He is shooting just 32.3 percent from the field and is averaging 11.3 points per game in 29 games. Last season, Smith won the NBA's Sixth Man Award last season after scoring 18.1 points and pulling down 5.3 rebounds per game.

The reality, though, is that Smith's on and off-court transgressions -- combined with his declining production -- figure to complicate any efforts to move him.

In addition to Wednesday's fine, Smith was suspended for the first five games of the regular season without pay for violating the NBA's anti-drug policy in the offseason. And in November, Smith was fined $25,000 for sending what the NBA deemed a "hostile" tweet to Detroit's Brandon Jennings after Jennings questioned the credentials of Smith's brother, Chris, a former Knicks guard.

Trade JR to Milwaukee for Carlos Delphino who's out for the yr
GustavBahler @ 1/8/2014 5:21 PM
Also means more minutes for THJ, Im guessing.
EnySpree @ 1/8/2014 5:26 PM
They shouldn't play him....the knicks have a surplus of guards. We don't need to play him....Charlie Villenueva can still play but Detroit just doesn't want to use him. Teams do that all the time.

J.R. Smith was one of the most important players the New York Knicks had last season, as he was a crucial scorer and won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award. As a reward for his outstanding performance, the Knicks signed Smith to a 3-year, $18 million contract. However, Smith has been absolutely terrible this season, averaging just 11.5 PPG in 32.4 minutes while shooting an absymal 34.8% from the floor. Smith is one of the biggest reason the Knicks play so much isolation basketball on offense, and he contributes very little on the defensive end of the floor.

Iman Shumpert and Tim Hardaway have shown that they can replace Smith’s offensive production, making him completely expendable. If Smith isn’t scoring in bunches then he has little value, and the Knicks need to find a way to get his salary off their books. Unfortunately, Smith is not exactly the type of player that other teams seek out in a trade. The Knicks could use some more frontcourt depth and a wing defender, but they will have trouble finding a trade market for Smith.

There are only three teams that I think might have some interest in Smith. The Cleveland Cavaliers, Charlotte Bobcats and Denver Nuggets all have a use for Smith’s skills, but it remains to be seen if they would have any interest in making a deal. The Bobcats are the least likely team, simply because of financials. They are clinging to the 7th spot in the Eastern Conference, and they want to end their playoff drought. However, due to the cap situations of both teams, it would be very difficult to find a trade that works.
The Nuggets are also a long shot, but they could definitely use a shooting guard who can knock down some threes. Of course, the Nuggets had Smith on their roster for five years before allowing him to leave as a free agent. The Knicks would probably be interested in a trade for Darrell Arthur, though the Nuggets would have to throw in another player to make salaries match. This is unlikely, but it could make sense for both sides.

The most likely destination for Smith is the Cavs, who badly want to make the playoffs this season but rank just 25th in the NBA in offense. The Cavs are rumored to be trying to move Dion Waiters, as they are sick of his antics. If they were to trade Waiters, C.J. Miles just isn’t good enough for them at shooting guard. The Knicks might be able to sell the Cavs on trading for Smith to beef up their scoring punch, and the Cavs have a couple players to make a deal work. I seriously doubt they would have any interest in sending Waiters to the Knicks, but Earl Clark or Alonzo Gee would fill the Knicks’ need for a defensive minded small forward who is younger and more skilled than Metta World Peace.

Smith can’t be traded until January 15th, and there is no current evidence to believe the Knicks are trying to move him. However, trading Smith would be in the best interest of the team, and there are a couple potential deals that would improve the Knicks both now and in the future. It is clear they made a mistake in re-signing Smith and that he is not necessary for them to succeed this season. It will be a tough trade market, but dealing Smith is the best way for the Knicks to improve this season.

Lol, the only trade I can see at all is we have to talk to the various tanking teams, Milwaukee, Philly, Boston, Utah, etc., and see if they want to trade us a 2nd rounder and a shorter contract for one of the worst players in the league and someone who's definitely become a distraction. A trade like that would definitely give them a leg up in sucking more than the competition.

This J.R. stuff feels so planned out, from the "trade rumors" to the apology. I doubt J.R. gets moved. Highly doubt it. And how could it?

I hope Jared is wrong but the Knicks resigned Chris to Erie today. So not sure things have changed as much as it is being portrayed.

smackeddog @ 1/8/2014 5:56 PM
Never going to happen- he has anti-value. In the past teams might overlook his immaturity or bball iq issues because of his occasional talent. You got bad JR but you also sometimes got good JR. now all you get is bad JR. He's been terrible this season- why would any team take on 2 or 3 years of salary, bad play and a bad attitude?
franco12 @ 1/8/2014 6:01 PM
Look - he's a bone head- but he has talent.

I think in any other market, he probably wakes up, smartens up and gives the new team production better than we've seen. So if I were another team, with the right coach and veterans, I would honestly take him.

Also - we've paid a large chunk of future salary:

A league source confirmed that J.R. Smith has already been paid $8.974 million of the $17 million contract he signed three weeks ago. Smith agreed to a two-year deal worth $11 million with a player option for a third season. Five days after agreeing to a new contract, Smith had knee surgery that, according to the club, will sideline him up to four months.

You can bet this has value as well to potential organizations- almost like including cash in a trade to cover a salary.

I so hope this is true and that he is gone soon.

Vmart @ 1/8/2014 6:06 PM
Send him to Miami for their first round pick. Miami is in the market for a backup to Wade and Smith could fill that need very easily. Riley and LeBron can whip into shape and make him into a decent player. He will have good company with the Bird Man who is tattoo buddies with.
CrushAlot @ 1/8/2014 6:23 PM
How about to Toronto for Fields. Ujiri can be brilliant again and the Knicks can get back the guy that Melo ruined

Would love to get Lin back on this team. But I don't think we get him without either giving up a pick or taking back more salary... hey wait...
But, I think letting him walk was personal, so I don't think Dolan would take him back if he was handed to us (again...)

He's probably right, this whole trade thing might just be a fake leak by the Knicks to pretend like they actually care about doing anything to solve the JR problem.

gunsnewing @ 1/8/2014 6:29 PM
I'm sure they'd live to trade him. Good luck finding a taker

Why did we resign this clown again?
